Some apps don't work after phone reset (while rooted)

Hey guys,

I recently reset my phone Droid Incredible to kind of start from scratch. I did this while still rooted. Conveniently, after the reset, the phone was still rooted.

After downloading my most used apps, I found that some of them would immediately force close. I thought, maybe if I install the GB leak, it may help. But nope.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I would appreciate any feedback tremendously.

Apps that force close:
- Winamp
- Dropbox
- Pandora
- Rom Manager
- Titanium Backup

Apps that work for example:
- Evernote
- Slacker
- WiFi Tether
- Various photo editing apps

Please help.

You were rooted and installed the 11/15 update?

How exactly did you "reset" the phone?

Settings > SD & phone storage > then I did both Format phone storage and also Factory data reset.

No, not the 11/15 update. The one way back in August (8/17/11).

Even before that though some of those apps were force closing.

If you were rooted before you applied the 8/17 update I would say that was probably the start of the problems.

For future reference it probably would have been easier to start by clearing the cache of each of the apps that were misbehaving, then probably boot into recovery and do a "repair permissions." but I think were beyond that now.

Here's what I would do...I would use this opportunity to either try a custom ROM or just flash the rooted version of Gingerbread (found in the ROM's and Mod's HQ in the Rooting section of this fourm). If you've never flashed a ROM you should read up on the process because thats what I'd suggest you do.

Like I said you don't have to go with a custom ROM, you can use the stock GB if you prefer.

Use titanium to backup any apps you want to keep that aren't screwed up, then follow the instructions for flashing a ROM and don't forget to make a nandroid backup just in case.

Basically what you're doing is a proper clean install of Gingerbread (or whatever ROM you want) and starting fresh. It's going to be like completely starting over again except that by using Titanium to restore your apps, you don't have to go hunting for them. A word of advice on restoring apps, try not to restore the apps data when possible. The only apps I restore as app+data are Cardstar, and Angry Birds. The rest get just the app only. Makes for less chance of a problem.

Instructions for ROM flashing can also be found in ROM's and Mod's HQ. Its really a very easy process.

Thanks for the help so far, Wanda.

I actually did flash the stock GB Rom and I was still having the same issue.

What I've done now is taken your suggestion further and completely unrooted my phone. As one might expect the apps all work because now...the phone is completely back to its natural state.

I'm trying to re-root it again now. I'm confident I can do it, because I've done it a handful of times before. Except now I'm stuck at trying to install the hboot drivers. The instructions want me to "right click on Android 1.0" under "Other devices" in the device manager. But "Android 1.0" isn't there because "Other devices" isn't showing up.

I do have the phone connected with USB and the screen does say HBOOT USB PLUG.
BTW I'm running Windows 7.

Any ideas, Wanda or anyone else?

I know if I can get through this, I can do the rest no problem.

Thanks!

Hmm...sorry I won't be much help on that side, I'm a Mac user.

I don't think the apps were not working because you were rooted. Being rooted only gives you root access to your phone. Thats it. It doesn't affect apps, it doesn't increase battery life, it only gives you root access. I think perhaps the apps stopped working because of some bad data, or bad cache or something in the app not jiving with the ROM you were running, which sounds like stock GB.
