Something I just discovered today about charging the note 10.1

I WAS having the same issue, even using 2.0 Amp chargers that weren't Samsung brand. I found a very simple and cheap solution. Rather than trashing your good chargers or spending all that money on a Samsung compatible, use one of the following with a standard USB micro cable. I guess it tricks the tablet in to thinking it is plugged in to a Samsung charger, so it then doesn't slow itself down from charging.

Galaxy Tab Adapter, Micro USB Female to 30 Pin Adapter Connector for Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 7500 7510 7300 | Meritline.com

My Samsung Galaxy Tab (bought in Oct 2013) always allowed me to read books or play games in an app while plugged into the USB on my laptop and it would continue to charge up. In the last couple of weeks I noticed that it is no longer charging while in use when plugged into the USB. I have continued to use it for a while to see if it just kept the battery at the same level or increased a little and no, it just keeps discharging. The only thing I've done differently with the tablet in those weeks was add some other apps. It will charge overnight on the USB if I turn off the tablet completely. It charges just fine when using the wall plug too.

I know this is old, but:

I work in China, so this was all of ?1.50! :-)

A similar device at Amazon.

Now any USB charger will work.

I wouldn't use this on a computers USB port as it probably draws too much power. ? think it draws 2.1 amps. Perhaps somebody more technical can chime in here.

IF you charging device does not put out 2100ma (2.1 amp) at a solid 5 volts you will get red "X".... Period.... Most phone chargers and USB ports on PC or laptops are limited to what their miliamp out put is.... Recently bought a Rocketfish 2.4 amp output (2,400ma) for mobile use and all my red "X" problems went away (for auto use) .... Its very important there is enough voltage (solid 5 -5.3 volt ) and enough amperage (2.1 amp) that "note" will be satisfied when charging... Most USB ports are limited to a 200ma output (PC or laptop) so they will never sufficiently keep up the charge, they barely will maintain device in running mode and may no even produce enough power to charge unit when it is on...Some people have also complained when using USB extension cord on charging they get red "X" ... Well its the quality of the cord and wire gauge inside of cord that is problem....If its not a "heavy duty" USB cord there is sufficient voltage drop (below 5 volts) to make unit unhappy with power its getting for a good charge.... So dump the $10 chargers and throw away all the flimsy USB cables.... Good quality (expensive ) charger that meets tablets specifications is only solution.....

To small of charging device and cables are like trying to draw a really thick milkshake through a very tiny soda straw..... Getting a bigger straw is probably the solution...

I have the same thing. I left my charger somewhere on holiday so had to buy another one and its slightly different. Ever since I have this new charger I get the red arrow and it says "discharging" in the battery info in settings. It also take forever to charge and I have to have my note switched off. Apparently you cannot buy the original chargers so have to make do with generic ones and these don't work as well. Very unsatisfactory. :(

I bought a "rapid charger" by belkin at Walmart that specifically says compatible with galaxy note 10.1. It does charge it when the tablet is off but I get the red x if it is on.

I thought I couldn't charge my Note 10.1 in the car. I didn't try to turn it off and charge it. I just turned it off until I could get to a wall socket. I love my Note 10.1, but I want to use it when I travel and I get the red X when I try to charge it with the USB, that was meant for Tablets. I am glad I am not the only one.

Hi,
I'm a computer scientist. Because of all the interest in the charging problem on tab 2, I selected it for examination. I bought 10 tab2 machines with the charging problem and destructively analyzed each one and compared results. here is what I found. in all cases the wall unit was good. in 9 cases the tablet port was good. the one bad case was a "fine stainless wire" was found in the tablet port. I disassembled the tablet to the port and the charging cable port.. No damage to the tablet port. On the cable, on the tablet end I dissolved the shell with solvent and found where the "fine stainless wire" belonged. The wires from the cable come into the shell and are connected to the pins with "fine stainless wires" straight in the middle and bent slightly toward the outside on both sides until the last one is approximately 45 degrees. that's the one that had broken. I believe it broke partially at the connector end first causing intermittent charging with or without an error message (icon). It would be possible at the current available that the pin could reweld upon insertion making a temporary good connection. (until the next insertion).when it finally broke at the other end the machines battery could not receive a charge because the broken wire causes "power good" signal not to appear to the tablet. I reconnected that pin and it worked fine. I also believe that the wire broke because of insertion errors. Samsung says CAREFULLY insert it squarely into the port. If you tilt or press it in hard at an angle to the left, you will stress the wire inside. Be advised the repair requires equipment the average person wont have and it will look pretty bad even if done by professionals. another cable will have a 90% chance of fixing the problem. buy Samsung. Please forward this to anyone you feel will benefit . I wish good on you, have a fun life.

I did not have this problem with the Note 10.1 that was purchased in September of 2012 until I replaced the battery very recently. I specifically ordered the Samsung battery and expected it to behave as it always had, but now am experiencing the difference between a hardwired 2.0 amp charger (it works) and even the Samsung charger, adapter with USB, that is supposed to be the standard (does not charge while in use and is very slow to charge when powered off). May have been a coincidence, but I have to wonder.

that's really a big effort to come to a conclusion..
the point is clear "INSERT YOUR CABLE CAREFULLY WHEN CHARGING" or else..

Great investigation and finding Mr barkingpipe. appreciate

Im having the same problem trying to charge my samsung note 10.1 using the romoss solo 4s.Im now trying your way ie. By turning my tablet off. Are you using the samsung charging cable or the one that came with the romoss charger. Im not sure which one i should be using. I found your comments very helpfull. Thank you

I purchased two 10.1's GT-N8010 in 2010. They have both been great untill the last few months when the batteries ran out quickly and started charging very slowly. They were using ICS 4.0.4 but I realised the problems started after the update to Jellybean. I have even purchased and installed new batteries but the problem is still there. Obviously something internal does not go well with Jellybean. I am searching for the old ICS stock rom which is impossible to find but I will keep trying and let you know what happens if I manage to find and flash it.

If anyone else has tried this or has the ICS stock rom please let me know.

After much testing of a variety of AC and 12VDC adapters, it appears that some Samsung tablets require a proprietary charger or adapter similar to Apple.
All AC adapters I tested gave the red crossed charge icon unless they were Samsung of 2A output capacity.
All 12VDC adapters I tested gave the red crossed charge icon regardless off output capacity (2A & 3A included.
Adding USB extensions did not cause the red cross in any combination, including extra thin cables, with 5 different cables strung together in series. Total length of over 3m still works fine with the correct 2A adapters.
BUT, adding a dongle supplied by Targus gets rid if the red cross for all scenarios!
This came in the "Laptop Car Charger + Phone/Tablet Charge", model # APD046AU
The Targus website actually mentions "iPad or tablet", so should be good for all.
Edit: as I do not own any Apple gear nor plan to, no Apple adapters could be tested
