Spam Call Handling

Re: Had a spam call and...

The 2 does that too - it's the version of Android.

Re: Had a spam call and...

Are you sure? I had understood it to be a feature specific to Pixel 3 phones.

The OP just said about marking it as spam and reporting it. She isn't talking about the call screening thing. The 2 has a way to block / report it as spam.

Sure. Of course Android phones have had that feature for a long time. If you mark a Call Screen as spam it does the same thing and I was thinking she was talking about Call Screening.

The only problem with the marking a number as spam is that in the last year or so these robocallers are using spoofed active numbers belonging to real people. So if you mark it as spam, you're only blocking some regular person. I've called and had a few people call me asking what I was calling them for earlier. So these companies were even using my number to spam call these people. So in that regard the smart screening is far superior to marking numbers as spam (and more fun too). I had one caller hang up before it even got through the whole message.

This is true as well. I simply insta-reject calls I don't know. If it is important they will leave a voicemail. So far the past 10-20 haven't so easy to see.

While it might be true. The numbers I mark as spam seem to mostly come from bizzare numbers out of area. The ones that appear local I check by calling them back and are usually inoperative numbers.

I don't call back anyone who doesn't leave a voicemail. If it wasn't important for you to leave a voicemail then no reason to call back. Especially since they can have a US number but make it route internationally which will then charge you international rates for that call back.

Ouch! I didn't know a US number could route internationally! Good to know!

I've called a few back out of curiosity. Many times it has been someone who dialed a wrong number accidentally and as soon as they hear an unfamiliar voice they quickly hang up. I can't be that rude and if I dial a wrong number I acknowledge with an apology.

My hope for a feature upgrade to Pixel/Android spam blocking would be a way to handle the local number spoofing that is going on now. MANY of my spam calls show the area code and prefix of my cell number with a random last 4-digits. Also, I get a a lot of spam from different area code and prefix and random last 4-digits. I must have hundreds of them blocked by now. It would be great if I could add a "range" to the blocked call list something like all calls beginning with 213-777-****. I know that there are a couple of apps available that will do this, but I would prefer to use the stock Android dialer, and not have to route my calls through a 3rd party.

Since blocking is on the basis of caller ID, and they're spoofing it, and there's no way your phone can know it's a spoofed Id, it can't be handled.

There are blocking apps that have "numbers starting with" or even regex. But Pie doesn't do it. Maybe send feedback (in Settings).

I pretty much handle my unknown calls the way you do with a few exceptions.

The lionshare of spam calls I get are from local numbers, most with the same first three digits as my own number. When this started, I called them back thinking it was a former customer, but they didn't call me and had no idea who I was. I've had the reverse happen to me as well. I'd say only about 10% of these calls come from out of state.

Same situation with me, first 6 digits same as mine, last four different. Never answer these calls, must have 2 dozen on my blocked list. I love the blocked list.

I don't get anything similar to my number

I guess I'm lucky. My area code is from a place I lived 10 years ago, so now when numbers come from there I know it is Spam and block. The call screen functionality had been fun too.
