Speaker cutting out during calls

Every other word or so both in standard and speaker. Plugging in headphones is the only way to get a stable connection. I found a couple old threads about this but with no real resolution and just in hopes that it was a bug that would be fixed through Lollipop. Is there something more definitive these days to try? I haven't received the update yet.

Welcome to Android Central! Can you confirm that it's the earpiece speaker and the main speaker that are cutting out (i.e., you can't hear the caller intermittently)? The earpiece is totally fine, it's just the speaker meaning it's only my voice that cuts out exclusively. I've been testing it on a phone number that plays your own voice back and again the only steady connection seems to be when I plug in headphones.

There is a bug if with Google now and have "OK Google" available from any screen it will cause the mic to cut out. Mine did this and when I turned off that setting (which I liked and used) it went back to normal. I thought my phone was going out because no one could hear me on the other end, or it would be very sporadic.
