speed tests are stupid?

alright i just got the p30 pro (6 GB) and I ran my own speed test where I load a bunch of my commonly used apps (starbucks, uber, whatsapp, chrome, etc.)

sure, when i re-open these apps immediately after loading them (like 15 total), they're all still in memory, but I find that over time, they need to be reloaded even tho I'm not really opening new apps. just seems to be like these speed tests are stupid because the OS, over time, closes inactive apps.

yes, I disabled Huawei's aggressive app killing by going to "battery:" -> "app launch" and disabled "manage all automatically"

OR is it because I "only" have 6 GB of RAM? Would getting the s10 Plus with 8 GB of RAM (or p30 pro 8 GB) make a difference? i mention Samsung cause I read soemwhere it has better RAM management than huawei.

If you're going to be switching among a lot of apps all day, you can't have too much RAM. Even 12GB won't do it if you load the phone up with half the apps on it.

But is that a real test? Do you really keep switching between apps. No matter how much RAM you have, running one app isn't going to go any faster - you can have 100GB of RAM, but that particular app is still going to run at the same speed as if you barely ad more RAM than the system and that app use.

There are all sorts of ways of showing that this phone, or that one, does this, or that, faster, but most of them aren't testing things that you really do, so they're meaningless. (Right now - April 2019, 6GB is more than enough. In 5 years? Who knows? If they keep making "app-making apps", that include huge libraries that are never used for the particular app you're running, we may very well need 100GB in 5 years.)

ya it's just im sure you've seen all those speed tests on youtube that load a bunch and then check if theyre still in memory

I don't worry about speed or RAM. I have phones with 3, 4 and 8 GB of RAM. I would have to pay such strict attention to notice a difference that I would lose my mind.

Welcome to Android Central!

I too don't worry about things like speed tests, RAM, or overall speed - I just worry if my phone shows lag while opening up one or two apps at a time. If I don't notice a difference, I'm good to go!

There is one more step you need to take, Android has its own memory management over and above Huawei's.

If you go to

Settings - Apps - Apps - click the 3 dot button on top right - Special Access - Battery Optimization

You will get a list of apps Android is Allowed and Not Allowed to shut down, go through the list and select the apps you want to keep in Memory and they should stay in Memory.

I have a P30 Pro 256GB / 8GB RAM variant, I disabled Huawei's Memory Management and selected Apps in the Settings that Android should not shutdown, and I barely get shut downs, my P30 Pro runs the same way my Samsung Galaxy Note8 did.

Even on my Samsungs I had to go to the Android Memory Management to do this, as I tend to jump between a lot of apps, but stuff to stay in the background and not be shut down.
