Split screen?

I can't get the split screen to work.
Long press the return button, side bar opens, choose another ap, and that ap opens. Is that it or should the screen split?

Figured it out. You can't follow the directions in the "get to know your phone" booklet. You have to drag ap from side bar to screen, but it is pretty cool.
