Sprint $10 'premium data' to apply to ALL new smartphones

Just so you know, buying a different "smart" device without renewing your contract and only swapping the ESN as service will still get you the 10$ add.
No need to buy a phone. Even if your current smartphone dies and you activate (after jan30) that old centro or touch pro you have laying around, you'll get hit with the $10 fee.

just thought i would add some more fuel to this fire...

in my wondering i came across:McGuire’s Law ? Blog Archive ? SERO Premium and Premium Data

basically, those of us on sero premium plans get to avoid this $10 fee as it is already built into our plans. however if we decide to upgrade to a 4g device, we will then see this fee.
SERO and SERO-Premium are not affected by the changes so not sure what fuel is being added. Whatever you pay on those plans today is what you'll pay jan31. This is according to Sprint.

Lol figured someone would be upset that it doesn't include us.

Funny. I was just talking to a guy today who said when his contract was up he was switching to Boost Mobile. For $50 a month w/ unlimited data plan he might have a point. Guess they have an android phone now with more in their future.

I wanted to buy a phone outright with VZ (mid-contract) and do the same you are referring to. Verizon said since I wanted a phone after their $10 'mandatory' data plan was established that my bill would reflect their new billing. No grandfathering even though I had 8mo left to my current contract. That's one of the reasons I switched away from Verizon and into Sprint. With this 4G crap hitting the market seems like Sprint is getting greedy. Hopefully I'm wrong and they don't force 3G customers into additional fees.

IS this price increase "only" for the androids? My wife has an old Lotus and is going to upgrade to the newer Lotus model, but she wouldnt be affected, correct?

It seems the lotus is a smartphone, but it did not make this list. It uses EVDO, so it may be a smartphone.

Plans: What's there to know about the $10 Smartphone Premium Data Add-on?

Misplace a smartphone, activate a old sprint phone to get by, find your smartphone, activate it again. Face the increase.

Lotus is a "feature phone" and does not fall under Sprint's definition of a smartphone. (it doesn't have a "robust" operating system.) My previous phone was a Lotus an after spending a few weeks with my Optimus, I don't think I could go back.

Yes, but my wife is in love with her old Lotus, so the newer Lotus is all she is interested. If she is not affected, then I guess it doesnt matter how long she waits till she upgrades(she is eligible now)

The Lotus is definitely a feature phone so the $10 doesn't apply.

As to when to upgrade, Sprint doesn't list the Lotus Elite on their website anymore and the Lotus has been EOL'd for a long time. There might eventually be a replacement, but nothing is guaranteed. The feature phone selection is getting pretty thin.

The $10 dollar tack-on puts Sprint on par with T-mobile on "everything" plans, but it still has a slight advantage over Verizon and AT&T (on everything.) However, if you buy ala-carte, you can now find cheaper plans on AT&T and Verizon, with MUCH better phone selection. Sprint is no longer the inexpensive no-brainer that it once was.

One other new charge, however, could be a deal breaker....20 cents for texts while roaming. My kids don't use a lot of minutes but they do use a boatload of texts...over a thousand per month. All it takes is them to be outside the network for a day or so and I will end up with HUGE overages. 100 texts is not unusual for a "busy" day with them. That would cost me $20 bucks. Ridiculous. Hmmm...I wonder if we could use Google Voice to get around that, or if the Google Voice texts just get forwarded to their regular number.

I just our 3 Palms and Samsung Moment with Optimus's so at least I can avoid the $10 charge for a while. However, if I start getting hit with text roaming chages it WILL be the end of my 10 year marriage to Sprint.

P.S. Seems to me a HUGE change like charging $10 extra a month or charging for "out of network" texts, is justification for not being charged an early termination fee.

I wonder if the text charge is on upgrades or new activations after the 30th, or if it will be applied to everyone. I just forced two of my lines to get a new phone before the 30th. I chose the Intercept for both of their lines, as their phones will not be rooted. One of those forced was my wife. She was still hanging on to a Samsung m300, because she liked the flip. Physical QWERTY was a must for them. Optimus S is great for those of us that like to tweak, I didn't think it would have been good for them.

My mom has the intercept, not a bad phone for basic stuff, texting, emails. I had it rooted at one point then they released 2.2 and I had trouble going back to stock to get the update. Seems the USB was malfunctioning, so I opened the phone and shorted it out, called sprint and got a new one. They didnt want to send it to me as the is a known issue with the Intercept, dropping calls. They wanted to send a Zio instead, I refused due to the physical keyboard, so they sent another Intercept. Never had a drop call issue with either phone...

Thanks, bro. I figured it would be good for a Mother and her daughter. That makes four out of five lines with android phones. Now to convert my wife's mom over to android. That might take a little doing, especially because when she upgrades, it will be after the $10 hike.

We have a shared family plan of everything data, with five phones total. We live in a "fringe" reception area for sprint, and my youngest son goes to college 150 miles away(where I think he has good Sprint coverage). I was just looking at our most recent bill, and see that "he" had 1779 minutes of "roaming data". Am I to assume, this would be charged at .20 minute? If so, this is $355!! Wow, he can't afford that, and I sure can't. IF this is a true charge to be expected, is there a way on his phone to block data transmitting/recieving, when he is in a roaming area? He has a blackberry curve 8530.

I am looking at the $10 hike like this, my next phone will be a 4G phone anyway. I dont have 4G coverage in my area, but I want that super duper 4G monster phone. You know, the one they havent announced yet. It will have dual core processors, a total of 2 gig. 1 gig of ram, FFC, 8 mp camera, 16 million color screen (minimum), a few other things too. :)

Oh, it will be made by HTC as well...

my optimus has the sprint insurance on it. I'm understanding that if I were to have and issue and get a replacement phone, I'd get hit with the charge? that is crazy.

What's FFC? Did you mean NFC, Near Field Communication?
