sprint navigator updated to telenav gps

One thing that really REALLY frustrates me with the current Sprint branded TeleNAV is it does not background well at all. If i leave the app to do other things, check a text, change music and forget to go back, I get no more voice directions. After a certain amount of time the app is then recycled and when i return I'm back at the home page. wth? Google Nav does not behave this way.

Is this "fixed" or adjustable with the upgrade?

Thanks for your patience, Glenn. I asked our product team about this and right now, there isn't a way to turn multiple-route selection off. That said, when a route is created, it takes traffic into consideration.
It doesn't seem to be doing that very well... I've tried this several times now, and basically what I did was, after picking the first and quickest route, I tap on the "traffic" button, and then the "minimize delays" button, in quick succession. Every single time I've done this, it has given me an alternative route that typically states the drive time would be minimized by a few minutes, or sometimes without any time change (in which case the original route would have been acceptable).

With Google's announcement that their navigation now takes live and historic traffic information into account for its route guidance, I've been testing it out, and haven't been using Telenav for a while. I'll see if I can document this behavior in video soon.

Please be assured that I'm going to be sending feedback from this forum to our product team and I'll certainly include your thoughts and use case in my email. If there is anything else you would like me to include, please let me know! Thanks, Glenn.
Thanks, although this is less troubling than the other issue of the app freezing upon start, even though it's been in the background the whole time. Having to wait for several minutes before it tells me the app has stopped responding, and unable to access anything else on the phone is a real bummer.

Another question I have is, can this app be made to support App2SD? Or at least simply save the additional download that it does during the update to SD instead of internal memory? I thought that was the whole point of having the update download things twice--once for the update apk, and again after you install the apk. I know a lot of games that do this so that it doesn't have to install 20 megs or something worth of gaming content to your internal storage.

With the small available space in internal storage, I need all the space I can get. If the app continues to have freezing issues, and there's no way to minimize the amount of space it uses on internal storage, I might as well just uninstall the update and use only Google Navigation.

Kenji:

I was prompted by the acutal application to update last night, so I applied the update. The application still has the background task, which I would like to know if your Developers have plans to remove. Also, the version is 6.2.6201286. I know you referenced a battery drain fix, but I am not sure if that is the vesion for that. Would you please confirm the latest version?

I would imagine that TeleNav won't be so quick to remove the background task.

The reason I say this is that the background task is how TeleNav is able to start up much faster than before. It already has part of what it needs to run dormant in memory until it is called for.

I have had the 6.2 update since it was released and I not had ANY noticeable decrease in battery life. If it's not in use, background apps don't do anything.

I've been using the new version, and I noticed that if I locate a place in Google Maps and select the option to drive, it allows me to select eithr Google Navigation or TeleNav. Previously, I could select Sprint Navigation and the address went to it fine. Now, with the update, the address does not appear to be sent over to TeleNav if I select that instead of Google Navigation.

I find it a great feature to locate a place within Google Maps and then have the option to navigate via TeleNav, but it needs to send the address to it.

Actually, this was a fix on the server side so no new version was created for this.

Best,
Kenji

I wasn't aware that this occurs like this and I've sent your exact quote to our team. Thanks for the input. :)

Thanks for the question. Let me dig deeper into this and try to find you an answer. Thanks for your patience.

I've killed the Telenav app from the background just prior to starting it quite a few times before, and even in such instances, it still starts up a lot faster than Sprint Navigation used to.

I like the new TeleNav, my biggest gripe is that when on a trip navigation it doesn't let you zoom out very far.

I have nothing but trouble with the Google Navigation -- constantly loses the GPS signal. Too bad, I like the appearance better and it scrolls more smoothly than TeleNav.

whats with the premium features? SPRINT is supposed to include all features of the navigation with my plan and now I see there is an EXTRA $4.99 a month I can subscribe to that will give me features that other programs have for free or cheaper.. Ive been using COPILOT and it has a yearly fee for traffic, gas, etc but its very cheap compared to $4.99 a month.. I would love to be able to TRY out the PREMIUM FEATURES to see how they are before subscribing (which should be free anyway since I am on a sprint plan that includes all navigation features)

Hello!

I have 3 issues with this new version

1) map redraws are extremely slow (dialup slow). This occurs when on 3g, 4g, and even wifi, where I know my pipe is at least 20 mbps on the download. I'm hopeful that some caching of the map data is done, but this can be quite bothersome. I'm in the chicago area if that matters

2) This background service nonsense. The app needs to have a toggle to let you enable or disable if you want. Other apps, like gosms pro has this option. If the service is running, the app comes up faster, if not, it takes a bit longer. More importantly, in order to stop the service, it takes upwards of 3-5 times of using the stop service function (from the running services screen) to actually terminate it. Seems like eventually it gets the idea that it's not wanted :)

3) When the traffic light is enabled, some construction alerts appear inconsistently. They're there one second, gone the next. Zooming in and out brings them back sometimes, as does panning.

Resolution of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

With an offline gps program such as copilot, it doesn't matter if you have a data connection or not. With googlemaps, telenav, or any other program that relies on the internet for it's maps, no connection = no maps = no gps.

I don't understand why there is no way to input cross streets instead of just an address.
