Sprint Stores Forcing Insurance Extremely Disappointed

they tried to tack on the insurance when i was activating mine. i think its a sneaky selling point that the bosses push on the workers. Frankly, i figure if it bothers me i'll just add the insurance later before the 30 days are up, or just buy a used android phone. I'm sure by the time anything drastic happens, i'll be able to get something decently priced vs having to use a deductable
 
I went to go buy an Evo 4G on walk in at the Sprint Store in South Park in Charlotte, NC (4717 Sharon Road Suite 2a, Charlotte, NC 28210, (704) 367-1600)

The store is requiring everyone to buy the $7/month insurance plan with the phone. I think this is an insult. I spoke to the store manager about this fee and also about waiving the activation fee and got fed a line of BS of how the Evo is so expensive to replace. If they want to be a hard ass on getting an activation fee waved that I can understand. But forcing insurance on everyone is inexcusable. I politely told the manager that I wasn't interested and walked out. I tried to stay polite but firm during the conversation but was frankly disgusted. I honestly am thinking about getting the iPhone 4G (current iPhone 2G user) or the Droid Incredible instead. The VZW folks were much friendlier and immediately offerred to wave the activation fee. I like the Evo 4G but was really turned off by this.


Wow, that is actually illegal. Let's just say I work in the world of corporate legality and that is a violation on several levels. I would write Sprint and inform them of that stores activities. It violates a variety of laws mostly concerning indemnification. If they write you back and blow you off- PM me and I will tell you exactly what to write.

On another note, I would recommend you not judge every Sprint Store on the actions of a few rogue crooks. I have had excellent customer care in all my dealings with the company.
 
There are two parts to the Sprint $7/month package.

The first is for TEP (total equipment protection) which has no deductible and covers failures to a phone that would normally be considered part of the manf. guarantee + other failures that are wear and tear in nature. For example, sliders that stop working, dead phones, cracked stuff, software failures (briked phones), cracked flips, etc, etc. Sprint will fix/replace your phone on the spot in most cases.

The second part is the real insurance part which carries a $100 ded per event and covers phones that are lost, stolen, or 'destroyed' in events like water damage, getting run over by a car, whatever. You have to file a claim and mail your phone in to a 3rd party for processing and replacement. Also, if your phone is stolen you need to file a police report before they will process your claim.

The Sprint deductable is $200, not $100. Also, it doesn't cover water damage. I went with the best buy insurance, It's $10/month, but no deductible and covers ALL physical damage. As long as you can get the carcass back in the store, you get a new phone.
If you got a replacement due to a defect and paid no fee, that was under warranty, not insurance. I'll keep the insurance at most one year, then cancel once I'm eligible for an upgrade.
 
Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to try buying from a different Sprint Store in the area this morning. I'm lucky enough to have a bunch in my city.

I hate to disagree, but the deductible is $100 for smartphones and $50 for regular phones with a the $7 fee to have the insurance. The Sprint plan covers everything, unlike Best Buy. I had Assurian replace my last device because of water damage with no problems. I think you have you information backwards.

The difference in price per year between Best Buy and Sprint is $74, but Best Buy doesn't cover lost or stolen phone, and/or Water Damage, I think. I think it one of those Best Buy doesn't cover. Maybe someone else knows. I do know Sprint covers everything.
 
At least the sprint store didnt try to charge you 79.99 for their 1 year plan up front like crappy ass RS.

The manager there tried so hard to have me pay for it thru RS, even though they send the phone out to 3rd parties. He tried to tell me the benefits of paying 79.99 UP FRONT and how I wouldnt have to worry about it.

He got so upset and kept repeating "Are you sure buddy? You're making a BIG MISTAKE!" like 12 times while waiting for Sprint activation. The ****** also didnt understand the concept of a $1 today being worth more than a $1 tomorrow, which I tried to explain to him when he kept saying their plan is the SAME price as Sprint over the life of the first year. I told him Sprint plan is actually cheaper since its over 12 months and not all up front, but idiot didnt understand the concept of Future Value/Present Value of money.

But I did have him sign me up for Sprint's $7 a month plan, I think its worth the money.
 
They cannot force you to add insurance if you don't want it. You should have asked where it was in writing that if you bought that phone, you had to add insurance. I would have requested to speak with their District Manager. Thats a good way to get yourself fired.
 
First off, carriers can not require you to purchase anything above and beyond the phone and a service plan. It's against the law!

Sprint was sued for this years back when they were requiring everyone who purchased a camera phone to also pick up the vision plan.

Sounds to me like this manager was trying to improve his numbers.

As for the insurance the only time you pay the deductible is if the phone is lost, stolen or is a victim of liquid damage, otherwise any repair or replacement is free.

Or physical damage. I had to pay the deductible when I dropped my Pre and cracked the LCD.
 
Lots of conflicting information here.

For me the Sprint deductible is $100 and I have had to pay that several times. Any user caused damage from dropping it to sitting on it or whatever requires the $100 deductible. I wish I had the luck that some of you have about not paying it. But it is insurance and the contract states $100 deductible---just like a car or home insurance.

BTW I just found out that Sprint automatically put the $7 insurance on my EVO without even mentioning it or asking. I called CS to just check on my plan and that is how I found out.

Everyone may want to check since I think Sprint is automatically adding the insurance. I don't mind it on such an expensive device. Just wish they had told me up front and I forgot to ask when I bought the phone.

That's the line of fud that Best Buy always feeds customers. Looks like you fell for it.

Also, whoever said Verizon had nice customer support:

They have nice customer support until you've actually signed up for them. Once they've got you on contract, they stop caring.
 
since theres this huge debate on the deductible, etc for sprint, can someone enlighten me as to how long I have to add insurance to my evo? I thought you could add it as long as its within the manufacturers warranty, but I think it might have to be within 30 days. Anyone care to clarify, please pm me
 
i have had insurance on all my phones and used it more then 5 times working as labor in at a ship yard has its hazards. if you like the phone and the service the it works you math says that after 1 year its more of a waste of money but what happens if only after 4 months it drop screen cracks what the math say about that 7x4=28+100+128 hmmmm new phone replacement 449. and the ETF at sprint is 200 so even after a year with no insurance op out of of the contract thats about 399+ tax. as for the activation fees now sometimes you just got to pay to start things out. if you do stay with the iphone then thats your deal iphone 4g looks to be a good device just deal with coverage issues, limits on what app you can have. i might have missed my chance on the evo but my iphone friends like the things i can do with my hero and android.
