Sprint Working Nexus S 4G Update To OS 2.4?

Mine has none of the issues that everyone is complaining about & smokes my EVO in every way, so I wouldn't say its a "fail." Guess I got the only one that works right.

Mine works most of the time too. It's just as fast as my overclocked sprint pre. 4G seems to work okay. I think I'll be more than satisfied with this phone for 2 years.

Mines working great as well. I feel like its naive to state that the Nexus is a "fail" because there are issues. Evo had issues when it was released, I don't see how issues that haven't been resolved yet constitute a "failed" phone considering it hasn't been out for even 2 months yet (the 4g that is) Mine works splendidly, way better than any phone I've had before. So its not everyone who's having issues that render it unusable. Mine roams unnecessarily occasionally, but data still works. So I doubt if many people view it as a failed device.

That's BS and you know it every once in a while you'll se your data connection drop ... we all notice this.

Come to think of it... I don't really notice any major signal issues, BUT what I do notice is that Data randomly gets Disabled in the Mobile Network Settings and I have to go in and re-check the box. This happening to anyone else?

Actually there is an area like 6 miles away from me where I'm working temp. that I get 4 full bars (~2mbps) and the 4g actually works in buildings. i actually enjoy going to work there even if it's only for the summer! Otherwise its complete **** everywhere else.

Happens on any phone. My Nexus S does a better job at picking up a connection in a roaming zone than my Evo does. My Evo constantly drops 3G and data when I'm in roaming while my Nexus S, though a 1X connection, picks it up better

Same here. I actually get full bars at home and two bars at work which is sufficient. But lowsy reception just about everywhere else.

I have experienced in the past week or so increasing problems with data signal, the phone is now locating my position 30 miles off using wireless only. I have similar problems on my other Sprint phones so this is a network problem that is compounding whatever issues I had with the Nexus itself. Call signal is not yet affected.

Going on an out-of-state trip next week and I can't update my PRL file either, anyone seen similar issues with the network recently.

I haven't experienced any network problems as whenever I get in the city part, I get full signal. Though from the looks of it, the Nexus S measures signal different than my Evo does.

Yes, I had the same problem in Orange County, CA last week. My position was always 30 miles off, and I could only get a GPS lock on while standing outside on the side walk.

This has happened to me a couple of times. I just reboot and it's fixed.

That is exactly what I see now, have never seen it before and a reboot will fix it temporarily. If I turn my GPS while indoors, the wrong location on the maps remains until I walk outdoors and then after a few seconds moves to my correct location once the GPS acquires a fix.

Last weekend the 3G signal just went off for the better part of a day - none of my Sprint phones were getting it so I called and they confirmed temporary problems with the network on my area. The wrong location problem developed after that and has not resolved - seems like the local towers are now reporting the wrong location coordinates.

I haven't had any wifi or 3G drops on either Nexus S 4Gs that I have owned (I'm on my second one due to an LCD defect on the first, possibly caused by my accidental drop). I would go more in-depth on this but this isn't really the thread for it so I put it in the first impressions thread (even though it's not a first impression).

The aformentioned pictures

I take some issues with this screen shot. Not trying to rain on anyones parade but let me play devils advocate

1) The build date on that ROM is 4/19/2011. This phone didnt come out until 5/8/2011. This is someone likely testing a pre-release build hence why it's signed with test keys. Also, the baseband (see point 2 below) also lends credibility to this being a pre-release build.

2) The phone in the picture is running baseband D720SPRKD6. Ours has D720SPRKD8. That means our phone has a newer baseband than the one in the picture. So that would mean they are testing a new software build, with an old baseband?? me thinks not. Our baseband was immediately updated to D8 upon activation. Actually, i got my phone on 5/6 and it was upgraded so that means this screen shot happened before 5/6

3) With the above info calling certain things into question, the only real leg to stand on is the android version shows 2.4. Give me a few minutes and I'll upload an attach a picture of mine running ..... version 3.9.6 (number was randomly picked out of the air, do not PM me asking for a build of 3.9.6 lol)

EDIT - Pic attached

Jerry in another thread said they were testing a new build with the old baseband so that would further corroborate his picture

A new build is being tested. Some tweaks, in combination with the old, pre-out-of-the-box-OTA baseband are on more than one Sprint engineer's Nexus S.

Yes, we know this is true. We can't say anything more without putting a job or two at risk. A few folks at Sprint like to keep us in the loop, and we appreciate it. We also can't share the backstory on this. I can tell you the above, and show you the attached pic. This is why it never made the blog a few weeks back.

Anything you hear differently, is either wild guessing or from a different source.

This is a case where I'd be more than happy to be wrong, in fact i'd be ecstatic to be wrong. Unfortunately Android is so easily manipulated that i could essentially make my screen mimic that exact screen shot posted and it would take me all of 10 or 15 minutes to do. Hence my apprehension to buy into a screen shot of a the about phone screen as proof.

People now do weird things like lie and provide false stuff just to whip others into a frenzy. Remember when someone lied about having the keys to the Morotola bootloader and it turned out to be a lie/joke/prank? It's stuff like this makes me take a glass half empty approach to Android rumors. Again, would be happy if i were wrong but anyone with an Android device has been burned on this before.

EDIT - I've said it before and I'll say it again, if one of these engineers wants to provide a dump and PM me a private link I'd be happy to work directly with them on stripping any identifiable information so it could be provided to the masses :)

EDIT # 2 - some quick google searches can turn up videos of Nexus devices reported to be running 2.4, but again, I'd want to personally verify a system dump prior to jumping too far into speculation.

::raises glass:: heres to hoping!
