Ok so my wife handles all the finances I just bring in the scratch. She recently told me that for our two phones (og evo and evo LTE) we pay roughly $250 a month! Is this normal? We have the unlimited plan and insurance. Are other carriers much cheaper or is this the norm. I do like the unlimited plan but it really only benefits us for txts and data. We barely use any call minutes. Any feedback or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Get off of the "Unlimited" plan and switch to the "Everything Data Plan" (I think that's what it's called). I have 2 lines on a family plan. We share 1500 minutes (free nights, weekends and all calls to any cell phone regardless of carrier are free) Unlimited text and Unlimited data and I pay $135/mo. I do get a 28% corporate discount (see if your company qualifies) but even if you don't qualify, you're still spending too much right now if you're not using unlimited calling. You'll save at least $50/mo just by switching plans. I would also ditch insurance but that is my opinion. You can buy used phones cheap in the event one is needed. With the insurance, if you add up the cost of the monthly premiums it's like you're buying a new phone at the end of the contract whether you make a claim or not! (if you factor in the deductible, the need for the insurance really starts to seem silly). Again, this is my opinion so you can decide if you want insurance or not but I would definitely switch plans.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm def looking at my options but the share plan is the one I have. Says mine I 110.00 a month and the wifes should only be 19.99. Plus the 20 for premium data and 8 for insurance. Plus tax however much that is. But the way I figure it that should still be way less than my wife says we're paying. I'm going to drop the insurance for sure cause its like you said kinda pointless especially when I've got the defender case on my phone. Gonna have to take a look at the next statement and see what's up.

You should be paying about $185/mo right now... Sprint "surcharges" and taxes usually come out to about $15/mo on my bill.
As for Insurance, I would definitely cancel it. I personally think it is a scam. Look at it this way.... $8/mo x2 over the course of a 2yr contract is $384. That is just the premium you pay regardless if your phone breaks or not! They don't give you money back if you don't make a claim... But they WILL charge more $ on top of your premium if you need to make a claim ($50-100 deductible depending on how they feel that day). That is also for each claim. I own several phones... I like to switch often so I'll buy them from Craigslist. I have yet to pay over $200 for a phone that way... I usually spend about $100-150. If you have an OG Evo, you can get one for $100 every day of the week. Count that as paying your deductible without the monthly premium!

Here is some info I found on their website.

Deductible: $50 or $100 non-refundable deductible per approved claim depending on the device.
Claim limits: Three claims within any consecutive 12 months with a maximum of $1,500 per claim.
Replacement equipment:

Claims may be fulfilled with new or refurbished equipment.
If your same make and model is not available, a comparable model will be substituted.
Color, features and accessory compatibility are not guaranteed.

Wow, so many under-informed Sprint customers here

It always amazes me how many people in these forums are under-informed about Sprint's TEP insurance. Yes, if you file a claim through Assurion then you will pay a $50/$100 deductible. But, what so many people don't seem to know is that if you bring your phone to an authorized Sprint repair center without calling Assurion then they will fix/replace your phone for FREE as long as you have a TEP plan. I've had phones replaced about a dozen times and have never paid a deductible. Most often they will replace it on the spot but in the event that they do not have any replacements in the store then they will have one shipped. You have the option to have it shipped to the store or directly to your house. Only takes a day or 2 for shipping in either case.

As far as the cost of your plan, yes, you are paying almost 2x as much as you should. I have 2 phones on the "Everything data" plan with 1500 shared minutes. TEP on both phones and a corporate discount. I pay around $160/mo.

I've used Squaretrade warranties for all phones for years now and never had a problem with any claims. Never paid more than $15 per year per phone either including the Eco 4g

Yes, you are correct that Sprint can repair or replace without a claim. I suppose I didn't list every possible scenario. I was thinking of a phone needing to be replaced more so than being repaired. Speaking of repaired... While were talking about things that so many people don't seem to know... In many cases Sprint will replace or repair a broken phone for $35 WITHOUT TEP. I think $35 is a much better deal if have a broken phone VS. paying a monthly premium just in case you break your phone.

I was a staunch believer in not having insurance. It was a waste of money and I always use a case and always treated my phones with the utmost care.

But last winter I dropped my ogEVO 4G and cracked the glass. It just slipped out of my hands and hit the pavement at that perfect angle and cracked the glass. The phone worked fine, but for the hell of it I brought into a Sprint store and they pretty much told me I was SOL unless I wanted to buy a new one at full price. By the time I was eligible to ugrade my charge/sync jack stopped working as well.

When I bought my SIII at BB they recommended that I purchase their Black Tie Replacement plan. Wasn't sure about it but I tried it for a month and decided to keep it ( you can cancel it at anytime). It's $9.00 a month and pretty much covers everything even if it's your fault except theft. If I drop it off a building they'll replair it or replace it and there's no deductable either.

Or you could check and see if your home or renter's insurance covers mobile phones as well (some do). I know everyone from Consumer Reports and other Consumer related publications recommend not getting the insurance because it's unlikely you'll ever need it. But it's like having home or car insurance. Yeah there's a good chance you'll never need to use it, but you pay the premiums every month anyway because you just never know (well for car insurance it's the law, at least here in Illinois).

But you're talking about a very expensive fragile device you'll be carrying and using everyday, everywhere for the next two years. Considering my past experinece with my last phone, I'm not taking that chance again.

That depends on the store. Not all corporate stores are good or ran by competent people.

Never had to do it on my evos but I changed the screens on my wifes and sister's phones using after market screens and YouTube. No problems and they cost about $20-$30

Um, that's not how the TEP works. A Sprint store will repair you phone for free. But if it needs to be replaced then you have to pay the deductable and go through Assurion. What you experienced is a warrenty replacement. All phones come with a 1 year warrenty, and if you phone needs to be replaced because of a defect or malfunction (and you didn't break it) then Sprint order a new one for you or swap it out in-store and then send your phone back as a warrenty claim. That's not part of the TEP.

Yeah that's true cause I just did it with my evo LTE. Started having really bad screen flicker. Took it to store and after looking it over for about 5 mins I signed a paper and I'm picking my new one up today.
