Standalone Mode

As mentioned in the other thread I went to the AT&T store earlier and there were about 6 employees in the store. I had about 5 of them come over to my table to figure out the issue. None of them could figure it out. They connected the watch remotely and tried turning NumberSync on and off but that didn't fix the issue. They tried turning Bluetooth on and off but that didn't fix the issue. The manager tried calling my phone from his phone and the call showed up on my phone but not the watch. They thought that maybe you had to be far away from the phone so the manager took his phone and went to a different part of the mall and called my phone but apparently the call didn't show up on the watch. They tried everything they could think of but nothing worked. Finally they called tech support and they did what tech support told them to do but nothing worked. They told me that tech support would report this and they would talk to the higher ups and supposedly I'm supposed to get a call within 5 days. My guess is that if they still can't figure this out they'll either have me send the watch somewhere so they can fix it or they'll have me send the watch back and they'll replace it with a new one.
I hope you can get it solved. Have you had any replies from others with your carrier?

Yes, Bob31464 said he's with AT&T and he's tried to help me. Like I said though....I went to an AT&T store today and there was about six employees there. Five of them tried to help but even they couldn't figure it out after trying everything. Hopefully the higher ups will figure it out and they'll call me within five days with a solution.

I got a text message from AT&T tech support to call them regarding my issue. I called them and the woman I spoke with suggested taking the watch back to AT&T and have them send me a replacement. I had my friend help me test the watch out again. I connected the watch to my phone and when he called me the call showed up on the my phone and the watch. Then when I disconnected the watch from the phone and had him call me again the call showed up on my phone and not the watch. Looks like I'll be taking the watch back.

Let me try to explain. For at least the AT&T version when someone calls the number for the phone it will ring on the phone and the watch when each is connected via bluetooth, showing the incoming call on both devices. When the watch is connected via numbersync and both devices are in bluetooth range, both devices also show the incoming call. As soon as the devices are out of bluetooth range and disconnection from each other happens, the purpose of numbersync is to use the e-sim in the watch to "capture" that incoming call to the phone and send it in "real time" to the watch. If numbersync is turned off or not activated then when the phone is called then auto forwarding to the watch is supposed to take place and usually the phone will ring a couple times before the forwarding process takes place to the watch.

Yes, the watch can use the standalone phone number issued to it at time of activation for true standalone purpose but in most use case scenarios the average consumer ties a phone and the watch together. When these watches can have battery life that lasts significantly longer than what currently is capable then standalone function is secondary to normal function.

It sounds like in this case the e-sim is bad and the watch needs to be replaced.

ehosey2, I paired/connected the watch to my phone and had my friend call my mobile phone number. When she called the call showed up on the phone and the watch. Then I disconnected the watch from my phone and put the watch in standalone mode. The call showed up on the phone and not the watch. Then I connected the watch to my phone again and this time I had my friend call the watch phone number. When she did the call showed up on the phone and the watch. When I disconnected the watch from the phone and she called the watch phone number again the call never showed up on the watch. We tried text messaging to see if there was a problem with that and text messages seem to work fine. It seems the problem is with standalone mode. I cannot receive phone calls when the watch is in standalone mode. I went to an AT&T store to have them figure this all out and nobody could figure it out. Everyone was stumped. They called AT&T tech support and everything they suggested didn't work. They said tech support would call me within five days. I got a text message the other day from them to call them about this issue and the woman on the phone suggested to bring the watch back and have them replace it.

Replacing the watch is what I would do in the AT&T store, then test everything before leaving.

You mean replace the watch and then when the new watch comes in have them test everything out before I leave? That's what I'm going to do.

Whichever way you obtain the new watch, upon receiving it take it to the AT&T store and have them ensure it functions as it is supposed to. It is not difficult to set up yourself though. If you can exchange it in the store that would be the best route.

I was going to take the watch back to the AT&T store I got it from and have them replace it. If they don't have any in stock I was going to have them ship it to the store and then pick it up when it arrives and then have them make sure everything works and functions like it's supposed to.

Great news everyone!!!! I took the watch back to the AT&T store and spoke to a guy about them replacing the watch. Just as we were talking the store manager came out from the back and remembered me and asked if I got the watch to work. I told him no and that I spoke to tech support and that some lady said to bring the watch back and have it replaced. He said they didn't have any in stock but he would call the Vestal store and see if they have any in stock. When he came back out he said they had one but that it was on hold right now for someone and if that person didn't come pick it up they said I could have it and the manager said he would pick it up and bring it to the store for me to pick up. I went back to the store a few days later and there was some confusion. They found one in the back but didn't know who it was for. They later realized that the watch was for me and I guess the store manager didn't tell them. Needless to say the guy who helped me made sure everything works before I left the store and it did. This watch seems to be working a lot better than the other one. I put in my information to add my debit card for Samsung Pay and when I called to verify my card I only had to do it once and it worked as opposed to having to call 20 times. I think what may have happened was that I think the original watch was defective. I'm very happy that they replaced it and that this one actually works.

That's awesome! I hope you can finally enjoy it!

Same here Bob!!! You wouldn't believe how frustrated I was with the original watch. I couldn't get anything to work and neither could the people at the AT&T store. It made me question why I even bought the watch in the first place.

I bought the Gear S3 Frontier so I could use Samsung Pay on the watch since it has MST and NFC technology. I also bought the Gear S3 Frontier so I could make and receive phone calls on my watch without it having to be connected to my phone. I used to have the Apple Watch and I had Apple Pay and I hated that every time I went to a store or restaurant nobody accepted Apple Pay.

Love that I can use it anywhere!
