Stay away from this phone

This is sounding pretty bad to be honest... I like the HTC One and believe it's the best android at the moment (for me at least), but with these problems like these I might have to get an S4 instead.

The HTC ONE isn't all that really. It's sort of dumbed down. Notification bar isn't all that powerful. Can't really customize it that much; which is the whole point of Android.

It's fast yes, but the build quality isn't all that either. "Zero Gap", no way. Look at ANY HTC ONE. Look at the top speaker. That top piece isn't flush with the phone. You can push it up and down with your finger. You can fit your fingernail through it.

Way too many people saying they have crackling from the speakers. It's like HTC ONE Speakergate. Just like the One X wifigate.

Should probably have changed title to "Stay away from Sprint" since HTC is offering to fix it for free.

This. HTC only says it will take time since they don't have local stores near you.. So shipping is involved.

Can't blame HTC for Sprints charge....

My point exactly!

You can't blame the OEM in this instance. I never implied that. I'm just stating that you can't blame Sprint either. Sprints policies have been in place (with minor tweaks here and there) for years now stating its return/refund/warranty process. If a person doesn't like it, they are free to move along. If they do, or don't care then when signing the contract they've accepted those terms outlined. I don't like all of Sprint's policies but I accept them. And yes, I read all my contracts! So by stating "Sprint is charging me for something HTC will do for free" is technically correct but a misnomer. Sprints guidelines are clearly stated and HTC's policy on warranty is clearly stated. By that statement, it's implying that since HTC offers to fix or replace a phone for one year under warranty so Sprint should do the same.

Why are we arguing?? :)

By law you must go through the manufacturer and they must present a reasonable repair which at this time 10 days is reasonable because that's how long everyone takes. If they refuse to repair the device and it does indeed apply to a warranty claim than the merchant who sold the item must take over the warranty.
This is rare, usually only when the mfg goes bankrupt.

I advice you guys to read your warranty terms and conditions.

I am just glad I got AT&T took 1 day to get a replacement. And I can walk into their repair center near me and exchange it if I have an issue with warranty.

While my speakers have worked flawlessly, there are two things you should know:

1) a manufacturer's defect can occur with ANY product. I have had defective units out of the box from PC's to game consoles, and COUNTLESS phones from various manufacturers. This is going to happen. Statistically it was your turn.

2) as a business owner myself, you are learning a valuable lesson I had to at one time myself- always have a backup [plan, phone, key, etc...]. I ALWAYS keep an old phone as a backup. This is because a) life happens, and b) all cellphone companies/providers have been a pain in my a#$ at one time or another when my phone broke/randomly quit/fell in a beer. I've never got a "loaner" from them- no matter how nice my tie is, or how important I made my situation sound.

Hope I don't come off preachy.

I wasn't aware that some notification bars were more powerful than others. How can you not customize it? You can do anything to it that you can do to any other android phone not to mention you can flash a fully supported stock android build or even fully convert it to a Google Play Edition. It's only the most praised smartphone of the year to date and Android Centrals pick as well but you are right, it really isn't all that. I know you are just trolling but I took the bait, I just couldn't help it:)

Have you ever seen Sense 5.0?

And yes. The HTC ONE was praised a lot by reviews. Usually reviewers just say whatever the other guy says.

The real proof of the HTC ONE is this very thread right here and many many others on the Internet complaining with blown out speakers.

The quality issues are now appearing after the first great impressions.

Not to mention the camera is useless.

Agreed.

Warranties are a pain in the rear, plain and simple. I never expect anything brand new outside of the 14 day window, after that I assume I'm getting a refurb which is fine if it performs as expected.

As we discussed you have your options from the carrier/store or OEM. Pick your poison and good luck :P

Then what the hell phone do I get? This one has top specs, the best screen on the market, beats audio. What do I really get?

The problem is, in the rest of the world, you buy phones cash. When they're yours they're yours. There isn't a carrier taking care of you or such things as subsidies.

Before I address the many erroneous fallacies with this response, I want to make sure that you are stating this as an opinion and not as a collective group of facts.

My wife thought her HTC One wasn't charging right.
We went to the ATT store and they give her a slip to go the corporate repair center to go do a warranty exchange. We were told if they had the phone in stock they would do the swap in there.

When I was with Verizon they would always send me a phone if the old one was under warranty and the problem had nothing to do with physical damage. The insurance was more for if you dropped it or lost it.

What this thread really tells me is don't switch to Sprint if warranty service is a concern.

Or just buy from Costco, at least you can get new replacements for 90 days.

Loved this phone till top speaker started to crackle. Bought it 2 months ago and now I have to pay $50 to get a new phone replaced. It's under warranty and HTC says I need to send in the phone for repairs that takes 10 days. This is my business phone and HTC told me to just use a different phone while it's fixed. I guess everyone else has a spare phone around? After talking to a sprint store rep this blown speaker is starting to become a more frequent problem on this phone. Unless u buy insurance be prepared to shell out 50 every time your phone speaker blows.

Be sure to stay away from brand new cars too. When they break under warranty and they have to keep it in the shop for a week they also don't give you a car to drive around during that time. Oh and a new car costs $30k, not $200.

It's not my opinion that this thread is about blown speakers.

It's not my opinion that google is filled with HTC ONE blown speaker issues. Just go to google and type "HTC ONE blown speakers".

It's also not my opinion the camera on the HTC ONE blows. You just have to listen to any review, or like I did, try the camera yourself and zoom in. In regular light conditions is fuzzy and blurry.

Not sure if you're being serious, but it sounds like you're making a blanket argument that the blown speaker is a common defect. With that I'll ask what percentage suffers from this issue? Is it a specific batch that has a higher chance of having this problem? Based on the metrics you gathered from le Google, what are the odds that I'll blow me speaker(s)?

Nope the camera doesn't "blow". Even if you use xxxxareana.com as a source of reference, I'll use that same source to show you the exact opposite. Short of the Nokia line-up, few can come close to rivaling it's lowlight, macro, OIS, burst shots, and HDR performance (I've seen the results in the sticky thread here). But I guess it blows since 100% crops don't maintain clarity eekk. I'll play the link love fest game also if yer like.....but I'll stick to the topic about the speakers

I've used the One camera and it sucks.

The 4MP camera takes blurry pictures. And every single person who has ever reviewed the phone says the same. Ok in low light conditions. Normal light the pictures are crap. Ok for Facebook but that's about it.

The blown out speaker situation is so common there are videos of it on YouTube.

So common in fact it made it in the news

http://m.gizbot.com/mobile/htc-one-receives-update-offering-battery-life-camera-011971.html

Also talks about an update for the crappy camera and battery life. But there's no update that can make the camera better.

There are videos of people talking about how the Earth is flat too.

From your link: "...For instance, one Sprint store (US based carrier), has got complaints of dead pixels and blown -out speakers associated with HTC One. While very few Samsung Galaxy S4 have been bought back."

The article was dated May 6th which is a little over 2.5 weeks after the release date. An anonymous source cited that ONE...ONE...ONE not 5 or 10 but ONE store has gotten complaints about pixels and speakers. They gave no indication as to the number nor the frequency of sold vs returned. I'm not even going to ding the quote about how only a few S4s were brought back, being that it wasn't even on sale for a full week when this article was written. If you can give any justification as to why anyone should take your "link" serious, I'll listen.

I can show you videos of how the speakers are praised and demoed for their ability to give nearly distortion fee playback at maximum volume. So why didn't those speakers blow?

OK in low light?!? Which cameras (sans Nokias) can do better?

"The 4MP camera takes blurry pictures. And every single person who has ever reviewed the phone says the same. "

Please explain what this means. Are you saying it lacks the ability to have proper focus when composing a shot, an abnormally high amount of ISO noise, aggressive noise reduction processing, over sharpening, or loss of clarity when approaching the maximum zoom range?

1) just give it time. Those speakers will blow too

2) about the camera. All people have to do is go take pictures with it. You can see that for yourself. No point talking about it here.

Yes I have seen Since 5.0. I've used it for a long period of time and anywhere you look people are saying it is by far the best manufacturer skin to date. It's fast and fluid and it has many great features. It's the only skin that got my wife to convert from the iphone. She thought stock Android was boring and hated how cumbersome Touchwiz was. If you read through the One forums you will see many users who were stock Android fans, but ended up liking Sense 5 so much that they kept it vs flashing a GE Rom. I am a stock android fan so I am fully converted but if I had to use a skin, Sense 5 is the best.

I am not sure if you are a ONE user who just doesn't understand much, or if you are just trolling. The camera is not useless by any means. It takes great low light shots and very solid daytime shots. Sure it misses focus from time to time but it's overall performance is just as good if not better than its competitors. You may get a better daytime shot with the S4 but in low light there is no contest.

As previously stated by multiple users, every device has issues of some kind. Some are more of a problem than others but when you start bashing every aspect of the ONE even though this was in regards to the speaker, it tells me you either don't know what your are talking about, or you are just here to troll.
