Google would do it, they used to have it for Gmail, but Apple threatened to take them to court because notification badges were first an Apple idea. So, all the "I think Google have done it right, don't need notification badge answers" are just plain wrong. May be Google will come up with their own idea in the future, but until Apple lets them do it, it just won't happen

Just get the app Notifyer Unread Count. It will be slightly different, since they are using widgets to create icons with the unread counter, but works perfectly fine.

I agree with steenke12, fully. In addition, I believe that Google should have added it as an option, and let people opt as they like it. In addition, why to have to swipe up/down and go though a number of notifications instead of simply seeing it at the homepage, and be done, period. Steenke12, again, I support your comment. :(

I agree as well. Want that feature that is on alot of other phones

Blackberry has a * - no actual message counter but at least there's something there to remind you that you have unread messages. On the Z10 you swipe to the HUB and read your messages. My new 5x is cumbersome to me - maybe because it's so new and so different from my Blackberry. My BB Bedside mode is sorely missed and I can't for the life of me find anything that even remotely mimics it. One swipe and everything is shut down except for calls. On Android, it's swipe here, push there, go back to the first place. I'm wondering if I made a mistake not going with the Blackberry Dtek.

One of a few? I agree withe the original writer...showing how many missed messages seems like a basic need. If there a none....I dont have to make even one more click to know that! Bring on the counter!

It's not redundant. Pulling down the notification window is an unneccessary action if there was a counter. You could see...without taking any action, that a message exists. The less key clicks or drags or drops ord double clicks the better!!

The 5x also has a very good notification light. Just get light flow or light manager. You can configure the colors and blinking speeds. Also Nova launcher together with tesla notifications will give you counters for phone calls, gmail, and text messaging.
