Stock EVO 3D Mail App - Save Attachment?

Per HTC's tips and tricks:

Save an attachment (Gmail or POP3 account)
Select email with attachment > tap the Preview icon > tap Menu button, Select Save or Save as

Unfortunately, when I tap the preview icon, all I get is a pop-up asking me how I'd like to open the file.

Currently, I can't even save photos sent to me as mail attachments. Is this normal? If not, any ideas on a fix?

Am I missing something obvious?

No, you're not missing anything. The instructions are just plain wrong. The only way you can save attachments when using the stock mail app is if you have an app on your phone that:

1. Reads the associated attachments

AND

2. ALLOWS you to save.

In other words, HTC was lazy in their programming of their email app and passed off ALL file handling to the Android app system. Unfortunately, for attachments like photos, the Gallery app doesn't have any real file management capability (No Save option).

One workaround for photos is to open the photo with Gallery (when prompted) and then press menu and choose "share", then choose "Send to Gallery". This will download the photo and store it on your SD card in the "download" folder and the image will appear in your "All downloads" album in the Gallery.

Problems like this are why many people choose 3rd-party email apps that have built-in file managers, so you can save directly to SD.

That helps - a LOT. Thanks!!

I've found Attachment2SD, which seems to work extremely well for Office documents and image files, but I'm still at a loss as to how to extract ICS file attachments (iCalendar, not Ice Cream Sandwich, which - on a side note - has made searching for related articles very unfun).

I don't use the stock email app for my main email. I use the GMail app, which seems to handle .ics files alright (in my Google Calendar).

I actually don't use GMail all that much. =(

That's unfortunate. The email experience on Android is much better with Gmail.

I was a diehard Exchange user years ago. When I finally started actually using GMail's features, I realized how much better GMail is (much to my chagrin).
