Solution: Swipe down from the top and X out of each one you want off the top. I just figured it out it was driving me crazy I had a whole row of downloads messages, everything but that's how you delete them off your upper screen. Hope this helps someone. Great tablet!

Welcome to Android Central! You can usually swipe them away as well. Or tap the Clear All Notifications button.

I mostly ignore that screen (long press on home button) unless I have many apps open, and usually just "close all" of them and start over.... But yes swiping down and pressing "X" will allow you to kill individual apps...
