Stupidly didn't check if SVTP works (doesn't), so what wifi hotspot app DOES work?

I never even thought to check, since SVTP has worked on every phone I have tried it, but I see now (from their Play page description) that it doesn't work on my wife's Rezound (just gives the "pay me $30 a month" message from Verizon). How about PDAnet, or Foxfi?

Not unless you are rooted. There is no WiFi tether option that works on a stock, unrooted Rezound except the Verizon pay one. Although, depending on your plan, this might not actually cost $30/mo or anything for that matter, some (most?) of the new Family Share Plans include tethering at no additional charge, except the additional data you may need.

Thanks, that is good to know, even though it is bad news. Since we have the unlimited plan for her, we don't want to give that up to get the family plan. Oh, well. Luckily, most of the time when this is needed (out of town trips, etc) I will be around as well, so we can use the free wifi app on my Nexus. Thanks again!

Vance14 I've been trying to find an app that I get use on my Nexus for free Wifi...if you don't mind my asking...what app do you use to get free wifi with the Galaxy Nexus?

I use SVTP and it works fine for me, but I am on a custom 4.1.1 ROM, so I am not sure whether it works with anything higher.

Doesn't anyone just use wifi tether anymore? Since you have to root for any of them to work, I've always found wifi tether works well without problems.

Is "wifi tether" an app, or some feature already on your phone?

I have an LG Intuition, and it has VZW's tethering hotspot app, but that just triggers a demand to get that extra $30 "option". I have tried Foxfi (paid PDAnet for unlocking) on both rooted and unrooted modes (just did full factory reset to go back to unrooted since I got it after rooting, and they claim "no point" in using it on rooted phone), but not able to activate wifi either way. My son has used Foxfi with his old Droid X (GingerBread, unrooted) with no problem, so it seems maybe ICS is locking out Foxfi.

Although the Foxfi message for failing to activate wifi says to use USB or Bluetooth instead, those seem to require the PDAnet client on a Windows PC, but I am trying to use it for an Archos ICS g9 80 tablet (worked fine with BT on old VZW XV6900 with Internet Connection Sharing - old meaning of "ICS" ;) ), but after pairing, I get no connection. I opened a case with June Fabrics, but after I explained it in more detailed response to their support email, they have not responded for several days.

The linux PC (Mint 9) fails with the USB connection (no BT hardware) although it sees the connection and wants me to go through the Network Manager's broadband setup, but that appears to be a DUN type connection that will "alert" VZW to what I am doing, and trigger the add-on package demand again I think. I pay them $175 a month for 2 smartphones, and a feature phone as it is - not interested in even more fattening of VZW's hefty profits (Q1 reports of those seem quite hefty indeed).

I never had this kind of trouble with WinMo phones with WMwifirouter or ICS/BT - they "just worked". About ready to go back to one of those, but giving up the rest of the Android ecosystem makes me reluctant...

TIA - any pointers will be appreciated. SVTP with rooting?

Wifi tether is an app. I've used it from the days of my Dinc.....and even then I had to side load it as verizon blocked all tethering apps from the market back them.....till the FCC stepped in last year. Never heard of SVTP. I keep the apk of wifi tether on my computer so no matter what phone I get, I can load it when I root.

If SVTP works without root that's great, but until android enables full system backups like blackberry or iPhone I will always require root.

I was pleased this morning to be able to simultaneously use WiFi Tether for my tablet & PDAnet via USB on a desktop PC.

Rooting rocks! The Rez is pretty great when rooted.
