Sudden Battery Drain

I just did a battery pull, waited 5+ minutes then started my RZ up again. When I slide-unlocked the phone I had a screen in front of me that says:

To obtain your current position a third party service or app requires you to check "VZW Location Services" and "Standalone GPS Services" in phone Location Settings. Would you like to open the Location Settings screen now?"

Then a button selection for Yes or No.

I opened the screen and VZW Location Services and Google Location Services were checked but not Standalone.I unchecked VZW so we'll see what happens. Seems to me I had issues on my Tbolt when I used the Google one but I can't remember it's been so long. No sure I like the idea of Google looking over my shoulder either but I'm thinking in order to keep my weather app(s) running I need to select one of these. I know I always used to use the VZW selection.

When I slide the notification bar down it still shows the VZW Location Agent -- does that not mean it's still running anyway?

Input from the experts please?

Get rid of things like "Juice Defender" and "Tasker", and install "LGE Switch" to turn off 4G. It's worked like a charm for me. I'm getting 12 hours of medium-heavy use on standard battery now (after the OTA update). Also, there's a SLIM extended battery coming out for Rezound in a couple of days (Mugen 1900mAh Slim Extended battery).

Where do you see it on the pulldown? In the recently used apps tray, notifications or quick settings?

I don't have these apps and 4G isn't here in my area yet. Thanks for the battery tip. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Re: Sudden Battery Drain - 1% minute!

Are you guys seeing a 1% drop a minute when you are using your phone?

I'm experiencing sudden drain after the update as well and I've tried everything from freezing VZ location to factory restores without any success. It seems the majority of drain is the result of the display.. Here's what I did to try and determine that.

Turned on airplane mode
Lowered display to the lowest setting possible
Set the screen timeout to 10 mins and left the screen on

On average my phone was losing 1% of battery a minute and the same was true when I disabled airplane mode. If the display on the phone was shutoff I was averaging about 1% an hr (in airplane mode) so I'm thinking this is related to the display.

Are you guys seeing a 1% drop a minute when you are using your phone? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a little confused by some of the points here. I just recently got a Rezound (couple of days ago) and obviously, like most, looking to maximize battery. Am aware of not using 4g when unnecessary, use wireless at home vs. network, etc. I'm confused by the Verizon Location Agent discussion..

The one currently on my system is at Version 0.0.0.62. The Verizon market says there is an update available (I think dated early January). I just did get an OTA update. I was able to force close the version on my system (not using Verizon's location services anyway).

So here's the question. Should I download the update that's in the marketplace if I can force close the one I've got? Can I just ignore the update on the marketplace.. Sounds like if I do update, I need to pull the battery (and Sim?) for about 5 minutes .. and then is that where people see the "select a service" on unlocking the phone and is it then I force close the updated version?

Also, someone mentioned getting rid of Juice Defender. I'm running the free version and it seems to be doing as advertised. Appreciate any help here..

FC'ing the app using a stock device is pointless b/c VLA has been granted 2 of the more notorious problematic permissions for battery savers, upon install. It's been stated by some that there is an issue w/ the update in the market for this particular app b/c when you do the update it will say it's not compatible w/ your device upon start up aftetwards. It was reported that downloading the market update disabled VLA b/c it says it's incompatible. I'm highly skeptical that it will disable the app from running b/c it's a system app. I'm rooted and rommed, so I can't verify that result, firsthand.

People will tell you differently, but honestly, apps like JD are every bit as detrimental as they seem helpful. So ditch JD, f you want battery savings. Just.set your phone settings up to conservative power using a standard battery. If you run w/ mobile data always on no sleep mode and sync settings are left wide open, get an extended battery.

It was in the very top where you scroll horizontally. Gone after a reboot.

Those are just the recently opened apps. Out of convenience, you can just drag down the notification bar and open up any of the last 4 or 5 apps you were using.

You only see 4 or 5 of the previous apps opened? I see 8 on mine, you may need to scroll to see all 8 though if in vertical mode. Horizontal mode should let you see all 8.You should see the same thing as when you press and hold down the home button from a home screen.

Appreciate. I posted in the Verizon forum and have a tech assigned (sent me her email) and problem ticket. Far too many folks giving the update a "1" with all reporting battery drain. I've got the extended battery (and will look at the approx 1900 mha one from Mugen) but still trying to understand what JD is detrimental (a lot of folks seem to like it)? At least, in principal, it seems like the logic behind turning radios off except to occasionally sync while asleep, is pretty good. At home I'm running in Wireless mode vs. Mobile data but obviously out and about there isn't that luxury.

When it comes to juice defender I've found that theory can be very different from practice.

I've always been battery conscious about my Android phones since my Droid X. I tried JD on the DX and there was no noticeable improvement for me, rather more annoyances as I had to wait for my receptions/wifi to turn back on. I ended up uninstalling and ROM'ing, and getting a 3500mAh ebay battery. On MIUI with that 3500 I was seeing 28 hours of moderate phone use.

With my Rezound I decided again to give JD a try after a friend brought it up in conversation. At the time I was on stock GB rooted and de-bloated, seeing appr. 15 hours of battery life. Installed JD and used it for 2 days. According to the JD widget it had "boosted" my battery life by x2.15, so theoretically I should have seen over 30 hours. I was getting 13 hours after install. I will say that the original annoyances from the time I tried it on the DX have been vastly improved.

Since then I've uninstalled JD and I'm now on Senseless ICS getting 15+ hours on a charge, while leaving data and wifi on. The only thing I do is turn screen brightness to lowest setting after the sun goes down, using the stock power control widget.

I'm coming from the original Droid to the Rezound, so I anticipated a significant change in battery usage to begin with. This potential problem with the OTA is muddying things a bit as well. I wasn't very conscientious the first day or so, recharging the stock battery when it was only at 80% and such (which didn't make Battery Left too helpful since I didn't run the cycle). Same is true for JD. I installed the extended battery last night at about 10:00 P.M. fully charged. JD (free version) is set for night time sync of every 15 minutes while the phone is sleeping. I haven't used the phone all that much since this A.M., but a few calls, some EBay, a number of benchmarks runs (Quadrant and AnTuTu - which scored very high), some games (which backend to the internet) and most of that away from home so not Wireless..

Right now I'm at 76% remaining on the Extended. JD is showing 1.33x boost over 48 hours, but again I was using two different types. I probably will wait till the extended battery runs down, and clear JD and let it start over.

I'm not seeing any hesitation upon waking up to get back to either the Wireless or Network radios. If I'm in between syncs and open mail, the resync there is pretty immediate. I haven't tried to get too fancy with JD (as in some of the options that Ultimate version offer).. At some point, if I decide to keep it (which I'd really like to if they can look at this bug!!) I'll probably root, get rid of some offending software or at least freeze it and hope ICS officially comes sooner rather than later.

As for the extended battery, I got the 2750mha one for $30 at Verizon with the phone.. the Mugen 1950mha is $45. Yes, the extended one adds bulk, but side by side in my belt holster case vs. the original Droid and its belt holster the Rezound is actually a little smaller (thinner). Just seems downright against law of economics to spend $15 more on a battery that it 800mha less. :-)

Talk about battery drain.. 3 hr 11min 50s on battery and i'm already on 8 percent HOLY COW

What were you doing for the 3hr and 11min? How much idle time, etc. and did you call Verizon? We really need numbers to make sure they know how widespread (or not) it is..

I haven't had a chance to call them. I made a screen shot... Display was 87%, Zynga Poker was 4% wifi 3% Cell standby 2% Mobile Recovery 2% and Android OS 2%

I can easliy turn off wifi since i can't connect to any around me.

To All,

Just got an email from the Verizon Tech I've been working with and she said HTC is aware of the issue (good to hear) and that they (VZW and HTC) are working to resolve. No timeline, but at least it's on the radar. I'd still call though if you have a problem so they're aware of the severity.

I understand the allure of apps like JD b/c they offer features/options that are not native in android. So it seems like you have more control of what your phone does. However, it's smoke and mirrors, apps like JD are both resource & battery hogs, just take a look at the permissions it needs granted to perform. Much like VLA, JD starts at boot, which means it is draining juice when the phone is on.. Uneeded b/c the android OS is designed to be it's own JD, hence the modes in settings that can be set to suit your power needs. So, adding a second app to monitor, what the other is already monitoring. It's a bit foolish to think the minimal extra features at your disposal are saving you power. What you think your saving is actually getting wasted b/c they're background running services, you can't control. App permissions are a big factor in power saving & consumption that you need to be aware of when looking at saving juice. An app like JD would be very beneficiall if you could turn off all the common settings in the OS that did the same thing.

About as standard as a response gets when allaying user concerns. Basically means quit calling us we have our fingers crossed we can fix what ails you.

Unfortunately the easy solution is allow users to remove VLA by a patch, and then once it's fixed they can re-include it in another OTA.
