Support Group for those switching from WebOS (palm pre) to Nexus S 4g

I have NoLED and it works perfect. I also have GOSMS pro installed. You need to make sure you have these two working in tandem. Play aruond with the preferences in NoLED. There are alot in the menu set up. Also make sure you have your settings in GoSMS pro set up correctly also. In that program you can modify just about every notification preference. NoLED barely drains the battery at all. I have had it since day one and have gottne any where from 16 to 30 hrs plus of battery life.

If you want to know how I have my setttings for NoLED and SMS Pro let me know and I will do my best to post then on here if it helps anyone.

Another thing I miss is the facebook pictures that were automatically assigned to my contacts. Is there a way to add this in? I had to manually enter all of my contacts online through Google Contacts, which sucked.

i'd love to see your settings as i use both GOSMS and would like to use NoLed again -- thanks! also - are you getting duplicate notifications with google voice and GOSMS?

Eddieras, I don't use google voice yet. Right now I don't have a need for that.
My Settings are as follows. hopefully I don't miss a setting.

Hopefully these helps. Let me know if you need more help. I know it took me a while to get everything right. I'm still tweaking my settings every day.

GoSMS pro I run in normal mode. If you want me to post those notifications I can also. That will take a little more work since you have so many different options. Don't forget to turn off notifications in the stock app when using SMSPro or else you will have twice the amount of text notifications.

skinneejay- thanks for taking the time to do that - i'll give it a go. i do use GV and get dup messages. a problem with gv.

Another thing I miss is the facebook pictures that were automatically assigned to my contacts. Is there a way to add this in? I had to manually enter all of my contacts online through Google Contacts, which sucked.

Since you already manually entered in the phone numbers. There is an app called SyncMyPix
that I use to sync my facebook profile pictures to my contacts.

What I did was updated my contacts in my Palm Pre and then used the patch for downloading my contacts to an email. Emailed it to myself. Went into gmail. Used the file I made on my Pre and updated my contacts on my gmail account. Then syncd my contacts and bam. All of my facebook friends information now stored on my gmail contacts.

I know it sucks as a work around but at least I have all of my facebook contacts information.

Going forward to update I would have to do the same thing but it only take a few mins.

Here's another question I had. The Pre charger puts out 5V and 1Amp, while the Nexus S charger puts out 0.7 amps. Will I damage my Nexus if I use my Pre charger also?

I can't say certain one way or another but I have been using my pre charger for the last week or so. No problems yet. Seems to charge a little faster maybe too.

It should work fine as long as the voltage matches. A 1Amp charger just means if the phone wants to it can pull up to 1Amp out of the charger.

I miss that blinking white ball. Can I get my Nexus to have the buttons blink instead? What app would work for that?

Remember how long it took Palm to get us that blinking white ball??? Quite awhile, so maybe in an update we will bet some kind of blinking thing too.

i can't seem to sync my facebook contacts, i think i read somewhere that the update blocks the syncing but how are you guys doing it? i go to manage accounts and click on add account and click facebook but it just goes back to the last page. how do i get it to sync

edit after reading some more i guess i'll just sync it with syncmypix and do some manual imputing, switching from a palm pre and so far im liking the hardware and apps

Oh man, the hardware is amazing and things run so quickly! I miss the Just Type, but the voice search has me texting and searching so much more effectively

Update on the Nexus S touchstone mod:

After seeing a link to this article about using NFC tags to control the Nexus S (thanks Wiley_11), I decided that I wanted NFC after all. :)

My first experiment was adding the NFC antenna back inside the phone between the touchstone coil and the back of the phone (in it's original location). To my surprise, the phone didn't charge *at all*. I took a voltage reading off the back while it sat on the touchstone charger and it read zero. Wow - that sucked. Next, I took the NFC antenna out and replaced the touchstone coil. I measured 5V. Just to be sure that I hadn't made a mistake I retried the experiment with the same results. Bummer!

So my new plan is to try moving the touchstone coil to the *outside* of the phone. This will only be fruitful if the NFC sensor will work in this arrangement, something I can't try until I have an NFC tag, so I am purchasing some tags now and when they come in I'll run another test. Stay tuned...

Good luck, this could be interesting! :D

Hi! Another proud Palm Pre owner from launch. Loved my Treo prior to that... a Palm girl for sure. Same issue here though, loving all of the new phones coming out and getting jealous of my friends ;)

Tried the Echo for a week. Thought I'd love the larger screen/multitasking. Thought maybe it'd be closest to the Pre for that reason. But after a week, and a couple of irritating glitches, I traded it in for the Nexus S. I love the Nexus! The app store is great. Even tho I hacked and homebrewed my Pre, I find the Android app store has a lot that I love. I do miss the cards tho! Miss the multitasking-type feel of the Pre. I don't miss the swipe as much as I thought bc my phone was getting a bit worn and over-loaded, running slow and not swiping efficiently.

Point is I am loving my Nexus S so far!! Was leary to make the switch, but glad I did!

About the facebook thing I find this a blessing in disguise. I had so many contacts on my Palm Pre that I didn't know what to do about that because it was synching with my facebook account. There were just too many in my contact list so I was really happy to see that this phone would not do this.

Thank goodness

for this thread!

I too was a die hard Palm user (had a 700p, Centro, Pro prior to the Pre) but jumped shipped a couple weeks ago when my husband used his phone upgrade to get me the Nexus S. I had used mine last year for his Evo, so I guess that makes us even. I LOVE, LOVE my Pre and WebOs but with it falling apart and not having the cool app factor I felt left behind (and couldn't stand the teasing from my husband). I'm still learning how to use Android and even though I miss the cards and the gestures, the swype app does fill in the void. I'm going to read this thread thoroughly so I can fully utilize my new phone. Again, thanks for starting this thread!

Seems like I'm right behind you again, in posting at least. I tried putting the touchstone coil on my Nexus back, and I got minimal or no voltage out of the coil when the NFC antenna was in place just as you did. I decided to hold off on opening the phone and soldering until I figure out whether I really want the NFC capability. You could have two different backs, but that doesn't seem all that great since you really want both.

As for putting the coil on the outside, I don't know that I'd like having the back of the phone so irregularly shaped. You could protect it by carving a gap out of a plastic case, which would also make it flat and give you better touchstone contact, but then the phone would be thicker with the case. For the time being I'm reserved to go without the touchstone.
