Switched from the Galaxy Note 4, now have Nexus 6, My thoughts

I'll try to keep this short, ask any questions if you want.

*The nexus 6 is HANDS down the better device IMO
- smoother and faster, there's no contest. (my galaxy tab is faster then my note 4.. that's pretty sad)
- All of the features of 5.0 are actually amazing, and not gimmicky, i'm already seeing the benefit to all the neat things like the lock screen notifications.

-Negatives
* The camera.. by far.. is just not that good. Google needs to get this right.. maybe they need to buy Nokia? :) would love to see the power of Lumia in the nexus 7.. imagine that?
*Battery seems ok, not as great.. which is VERY VERY odd to me.. because there's zero bloat on the N6... this leads me to believe it's the software.. it has to be lollipop.. which i'm happy with that thought because they are bound to update lollipop with some sort of patch to improve this right? with the size of the battery in the N6 it's hard to believe the battery life is average.

All in all i'm beyond happy with switching, this is definitely the better device.

I own and love both phones. I tried to give up one and couldn't. They both have features and optimizations that make them compelling.

Display- The Note 4 has a slight edge. I removed the adaptive brightness on the N6 to make it fair and they're both beautiful. There is something about the Note 4 screen that seems just a tad better. I have used both simultaneously in direct sunlight and the results were equal. There was no difference for me.

Battery- Another slight edge to Note simply because it is replaceable. For my usage, I haven't seen the huge disparity like others have. I have pretty much equal SOT for both phones. Unlike others, I charge my phone every night. I never have a problem with draining the battery on a given day. IF I were going to an amusement park or on vacation, I'd probably take the Note 4 just because I can swap the battery.

Feel- Another category where both phones feel good in different ways. The N6 has the curved back and is very thin at the bottom of the phone. This helps me immensely based on how I type with two hand with my pinkies resting at the bottom. The Note 4 has a grippier back, which makes it easier to hold without a case (my preference).

Camera- I've held both phone together and taken pictures under the same conditions and have come out with a mixed bag. I've shared these photos with friends and family and their opinions on the same pictures have varied. Some look better on the Note 4 while others looked better on the N6. I find this amazing because so many have put down the camera on the N6. I think it is more than functional based on the pictures I have taken. The Note 4 appeared to have sharper pics and I don't know if that is necessarily good or not because I'm not a photographer. I know the pics were taken at the same time in the same conditions and they just appear to be really sharp. It looks good on some and not so good on others. As for options, the Note 4 crushes many phones, let alone the N6.

Speakers- No contest. N6 hands down. Personally, I like these speakers better than the M8!

Lollipop- Love it. My only bone with lollipop is not having an option to disable the banner notifications. It is a huge annoyance for me and is why I use the Note 4 slightly more than the N6. It is annoying when reading online or watching a video and a notification banner pops up at the top of the screen. Other than that, Android 5.0 is a major win.

These are my observations under my own conditions. I never let someone else's observations dictate a purchase. I perform my own tests. You'll read both ends of the spectrums for pros and cons. At the end of the day, you have to try for yourself. Don't jade your mind with comments on boards and go in open minded with any phone purchase. What someone else experiences may not be yours. For those that own and enyoy, keep on keeping on. For those on the fence, bring one home and use it. IF you don't like it, return it.

Thank you for the suggestions. I really want to keep my N6. I already tried most of these setting yesterday, but not GPS. I don't want to give up Trusted Places function. The display at 20%...might be hard for my older eyes, but I'll give that a day or two. Again, thank you for suggestions.

Good day, AnnDroid. If you have to shut off all of those radios, there is no point in having a smartphone. I don't turn off anything I use. It is the whole purpose of owning a smartphone. If the battery doesn't work for you, I'd find a phone that does where you don't have to make compromises. I have both phones with AT&T and never have battery issues. I never turn off wifi, NFC, LTE or whatever. I use my phone to its full intent. Lastly, turning off those radios will give you very nominal, if any gains. If you're in a bad reception area, that will hurt you more than anything.

I usually leave all my radios on and I'm OK, except when I get home. I live in an area with notoriously bad cell service with any provider, including Verizon. My cell standby on my Nexus 6 will quickly drain my battery... I think something like 12%+ an hour, just sitting there idle, not even touching the phone... I pretty much have to turn my phone into Airplane mode and turn on WiFi right after when I get home. Then I'm draining 1-2% an hour. Somehow, my SmartLock still seems to know I'm at home and I can unlock the phone without my PIN.

All of this is acceptable, though, because I only give out my Google Voice # to everyone and I'm fully integrated with Hangouts, so phone calls and text messages still roll through normally, even while in Airplane mode with WiFi.

Holy crap... a completely logical and sane post from a Jets fan... Now I've seen everything (well, I'll see everything when the Jets win another Super Bowl.... like that will ever happen .... go pats)

But yeah... I think there is a lot of group-speak when it comes to these phones. There are a couple of people who have not only used, but have owned most of the 'top tier' phones on the market...but the majority might have only used one and the tendency there is to parrot the opinions they've read. Sometimes all it takes is for a well-known blogger to post a bad opinion and it get repeated over and over until it almost becomes fact... "Well, everyone is saying phone X has a crappy Y, so it has to be true"

The Nexus 5's camera had some serious issues on launch....but over the next couple of updates, Google helped made some big improvements but it carries that initial opinion with it to this day. "Nexus phones have crappy cameras" became law.

I'm seeing a lot of that with the Nexus 6's camera. Online, opinions are all over the place (though, the ones that actually USE the thing and take pics tend to have good reviews, the sites that don't have any sample shots typically are negative - draw your own conclusions there).... so all I can go off is my own experience. I had a Nexus 5, then swapped it out to a LG G3 (which I found to have a exceptionally capable camera), then I just bounced over to the Nexus 6.

The Nexus 6 is a lot closer to the G3 in terms of quality and ability... the one area that it lags is focusing... With the inclusion of the laser focus, the G3 is a focusing machine. I've checked out the iPhones, the two Galaxies and whatever devices I could get my hands on... while they might be able to focus as quickly, they won't do it as reliably as the G3... its a dream to take pictures with and its why I'll be swapping out my wife's Nexus 5 with one once I get a case for her.

That being said, the Nexus 6 focuses MUCH better than the 5.. better, more reliable focus, more detail, pretty much a big improvement across the board. I think what is really holding it back is the Google Camera... its a great little camera app for quick pics and all, but it has its limitations that become readily apparent once you use some of the good 3rd party apps or the stock aps on the G3 or Note 4. The GC's saving grace is the HDR+ mode... that app is like an ***** savant... it trudges along a bit until you hit the HDR+ selector than it turns into a bad-*** mix-lighting picture taking beast. Can't figure it out....

I mean, here is an example in the level of quality difference. Here are two 100 crops of my x-mas tree. There is a window off to the right of the frame which kicks in a lot of light into an otherwise dark room and the x-mas lights are throwing off points of exposure confusing light. If HDR had a raison d'etre, it's this scenario. The standard pic is kind of a mess. The full pic has the window completely over-exposed (its just one bright ball of light) and the tree's details are totally muddled and noisy... washed out, fuzzy. It can't set the exposure for both the dark room and the window, so it splits the difference and pretty much messes up both. In comparison, the HDR+ shot tightens up the exposure, preserves details, reduces noise... the difference is pretty drastic.

So near as I can figure, the Nexus 6 camera hardware is actually extremely good, its just being limited by a stock camera that in no way, shape or form is capable of taking advantage of it (as someone previously mentioned).

I'm switching over to the Note 4 today. The Nexus 6 had more bugs than a beached whale during low tide

I'm fighting between these two right now (currently using a Nexus 5). As soon as I heard the news of the Note 4 I had to have one. But it took FOREVER to be released, and by the time it had been released, the Nexus 6 had been announced, so I decided to try to get one of those - since I was coming from a stock device anyway, and really wanted a larger phone. I was lucky enough to order one on Nov. 5th. It took until Dec. 2nd for me to get it, and lo and behold there was some damage on the phone when I got it. I called Google and they sent me an RMA label and I returned the Nexus. I got the next one and it, too, had some physical issues straight out of the box (some sort of greasy stains on it, which makes me wonder if this was actually a new phone). Again, went the Google RMA route and they sent me another phone. I figure, 3rd time will be the charm, right? But no, I just got the 3rd phone and it has visible chips that you can feel in the aluminum (again questioning whether this was a new phone or not). I now have to wait for them to get the second RMA before I can do another replacement and by the time I get it it'll be a good month and a half since I originally ordered it. It's kind of leaving a bad taste in my mouth and I'm really wanting to look into the Note. I already really liked it, just not a HUGE fan of TouchWiz, but I know I could get by, and I can actually order one and get it without having to deal with the long and drawn out process that has been dealing with Google. This thread has been good for me to try to make up my mind.

Someone wants to buy my Nexus 6 and I can stand to make a profit, albeit small, off it.

I love the stock experience more in tasks such as app opening and switching and text scrolling. The Note 4 text scrolling looks like it skips frames so I can't scroll and read headers or my twitter feed at the same time. I have to scroll, stop, and then read. It really hurts my eyes after doing this awhile. The Nexus 6, on the other hand, is very smooth and allows me to scroll and read simultaneously. I can read my rss feed, use other apps and consume media, then come back to the rss app hours later and I can read where I left off. I rarely use more than 1.5GB while the Note 4's ram is almost always maxes out to the point where I have to start over and find where I left off when I switch to that same rss app hours later.

Overall I have a smoother experience using the Nexus 6. The UI is so much better than TouchWiz. The system settings on the Note 4 is a mess and why do some apps need to hide the status bar like the calculator app? So not necessary. It makes me cringe when the Note 4 lags half a second when I press the overview button. Why is my year old Nexus 5(still on KitKat) more smooth and responsive than the ultra powerful Note 4 and, to an extent, the Nexus 6? Also try scrolling through a Hangouts message when it's on the bottom of a multi window session with SwiftKey. It's a buggy mess since the keyboard pops up every time scroll up. Out of all the software kitchen sink features the Note 4 offers I feel only the S-pen done well.

The radios on the Nexus 6 is better than the Note 4 by a lot. And what I mean by "a lot" I mean that I get a good signal and able to stream on the Nexus 6 at a good distance from the WiFi router while it stutters or I spend several minutes staring at that loading circle on the Note 4. At times I would get WiFi signal on my Nexus 6 while my Note 4 reverts to LTE because it can't get the WiFi signal. Sometimes I intermittently lose WiFi signal from the Note 4 while the Nexus 6 is able to hold it and at a farther distance. Downloading files and loading Web pages takes longer on the Note 4. I hardly feel you have to wait for something to fully load when I use the Nexus 6. Just today I compared loading a news article on both phones and I was able to go through all 9 pages on the Nexus 6 while I'm stuck loading page 4 on the Note(4). Mobile Chrome still sucks and I find the stock browser on the Note 4 scrolls smoother.

The camera on the Note 4 blows the Nexus 6's camera out the water(especially in low light situations) and say what they want about Samsung bloat(I hate how they include Facebook and Instagram as system apps) but I get 45 minutes to a little over an hour more on screen time on the Note. Also the Note 4 has excellent stand by battery consumption compared to the Nexus 6. I think Google made stock Android ping Google Play Services a bit too much or something. Even when rooted Greenified the Nexus 6 wakes up way too much compared to my stock Note 4. The fingerprint scanner is nice and works very well but I prefer using the trusted device feature on Lollipop to unlock my phone.

Since you get 50% off any accessory under $50 when you register your Note 4, I was able to get an extra battery and charger kit for only $22. The fingerprint scanner is excellent and I rarely have to scan more than once to get to my home screen. The display is better but not by that much. Auto brightness is much better to me than the iOS copy cat adaptive display on the N6. I have to fiddle with the brightness settings on the Nexus 6 several times a day while I only need to manually change the brightness on the Note 4 once when I'm reading in bed at night. Since the Note 4 is still on KitKat I get the notification ticker(except for phone calls) instead of the obtrusive and annoying banner ios notification banner on the Nexus 6. I sure hope Samsung keeps the ticker when they update the Note 4 to Lollipop instead of using the stock notification.

Overall I feel the compromises I make in using the Nexus 6 is carrying it around while on the Note 4 I have to change the way I use a a phone and have more patience in doing it. So far I feel I'd rather have a better experience than tolerating and being able to tolerate how I use a phone for a longer time.

My S3 has terrible standby. Once fully charged, it goes down 10% overnight, with a 4,200 mAh battery installed. I understand that it's an older device, but that's a crazy drop, considering I have a bunch of things turned off or disabled. How much battery do you lose in percentage overnight on the Nexus 6? I'm a student, and as such keep my phone in airplane mode during classes, but I'd like to think with my usage habits I can still get through the day?

I'll do a test on both devices tonight and get back to you when I get the results.

I switched from Note 4 also. It was a hard decision because my last few phones were Samsung. I had S3, Note 3, S5, then Note 4.

I'm pleased with the choice. Lag on the Note 4 was pissing me off. The Note 3 didn't lag as much. And battery life on Nexus 6 is about same as the Note 4. I'm on battery 19 hours now. Around 2 hours SOT and 2 hours talking... Still got 50% left.

This is my first experience with pure Android and I thought I might not like it... But I was soooo wrong!!

Re: Galaxy tab cameras suck big time

No,
the camera SUCKS. There is absolutely no reason to use the camera unless you are taking photos of something you absolutely don't care about like a slug, a sandbox, a shopping cart. And make sure you want the worst resolution in the world. My niece's kiddie camera is better than this for the money its a rip.

I think this is just pure rumor and speculation....... The Nexus 6 uses a qHD screen... we didn't really see any qHD screens in smartphones in 2013 and they didn't really start hitting devices until what April or May of 2014 (Six months ago) so how "Last Generation" can they be??? LG was the first to "Announce" a qHD screen in August 2013 with shipments to start in 2014.... By this time next year we will probably be looking at 4K screens and qHD is going to be "Last Gen" like 1080p is become "Last Gen"

Samsung does call their panel a "Super" AMOLED vs just AMOLED in the Nexus 6.... but Samsung isn't the only AMOLED MFG... If anything it's just a difference in MFG process and MFG in general vs "Last Gen"

Actually, I think you're dead wrong. Take a look at this article

Thank you, much appreciated. :)
This is after five hours sitting there screen off. Only radio that's on is WiFi. First sceeenshot is on the Note 4.

Any noticeable differences in cell signal acquisition in different areas? WiFi signal and speed? Thanks!

The radio on the Note 4 is pretty bad compared to the Nexus 6. Used GPS on both devices and while Nexus 6 was smooth throughout the drive, the Note 4 stuttered and lagged miles behind before relocking the signal.

I find the confirmation dialog Windows that pops up when I'm turning on and off airplane mode, tethering, volume up when a headset plugged in to be very annoying. I don't need Mother Chaebol asking me "are you really sure you want to do this?" everytime I do something. Sheesh 😡

Agree. Google needs to work on that stock camera app, because software always seems to be lacking in stock android for cameras.

Every single notification that you don't wanna see on the lockscreen can be removed. Of all you wanna see are texts and ✆ calls then tell your phone not to display the application's notifications!
