Hi all, I'm new here. I've pretty much been with apple since I started with smartphones. My contract is up in october, I currently have a 4S, and I'm just not that impressed with the 5S, (and I've been rockin the beta versions of IOS 7 now for a couple months, so thats old now too), so I'm gonna be switching to an android for the first time. So while I wait the last month out, I'm researching. So here are a couple questions.

What are some MUST HAVE apps that really work well with the phone?

I see you guys get icon packs and widgets and all that, do you have to be rooted to make these sort of changes? I'm used to jailbreaking the iphone to get this sort of stuff, wasn't sure if android worked the same way.

thanks, and any advice is greatly appreciated!!

EDIT: I reposted in a different section, please kill this thread. thanks!!!!

Welcome to the forums and soon Android!
This link is a little dated, but still may be useful: http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/137252-apple-users-guide-android.html

Now for your questions: Apps...depends on what you like. I don't have this device, but I would suggest anything that shows off the screen. The Android Central App and the AC Forums apps should be pre installed on Every Android phone...LOL.

Themes: Widgets, you can do out of the box. The only stipulation is you need the specific app first. Meaning you can't have Accuweather's widget without the app. Icon packs...depends. SHould be able to install those without rooting. You can also install a different launcher. A launcher is a User Interface that changes the way you interact with the device.
A couple favorites are Nova and Action.

You dont need to be rooted, to do basically everything you could want anymore... there are launchers, icons packs, themes, everything you can imagine. one thing about android is you can make it look and feel exactly like you want! you can customize to your hearts desire, and dont need to be rooted. and its all very easy. you would only need root to customize much deeper, and to tweak the OS and kernels. which coming from ios is going to be more than you need for awile. I would say the absolutely best phone you can by is the HTC One Google Play Edition. simply amazing
