I am not sure if this bug is exclusively me, limited to all captivate owners, or a bug of the android operating system. I am curious to find out if other people can reproduce this problem:

1. Go to "Settings>Sound and Display>System Volume" and turn it all the way down.

2. Open Google Maps and tell it to navigate you somewhere.

3. Exit Google Maps/Navigation

On my phone, the system volume will now be returned to 100%. This is quite annoying, because I can't stand the clicking it makes every time I press something. Does anybody else experience this?

Same thing happened to me...system volume went back to 100%.

You can turn off the clicking sound...Settings>Sound and display scroll down to Audible selection and uncheck it.

Edit: I don't think the volume thing is a bug. You may have set it to zero, but then requested a function that required the volume to be turned up and Android automatically over-rode your earlier setting.

Didn't even realize the Audible Selection option was there. That seemed to work for me.

Thanks a lot - you just saved me from going insane.

I've noticed my system sound going up to 100% after being set to around 40%, but it's been really random AFAIK and I haven't been able to attribute it to one specific app. Like Ranjo said, it's probably an app that is changing the system sound for use in that particular app and then remaining at that level across the entire OS (hence "system sound" eh?). Still, it's kind of annoying, but it's a quirk I've learned to adjust to.

Being new to Android, there are a lot of quirks that I'm having to learn to adjust to. I think most of it is the fact that, with so many third-party apps available, it's nearly impossible to set up something like system-wide sound settings that always work the way I might expect...

I occasionally find my message notification volume has turned itself down. It wouldn't be so bad but I can't figure out how to make it vibrate for text messages.I have it set to vibrate for emails but that doesn't do it.

There's an app in the market called 'volume button lock' that overrides maps and navigation programs' tendency to max out the system volume. It doesn't stay enabled if you reboot the phone, though.

I think it's a bug that an app can override the system volume (for example, maxing out the system volume with the maps app) because when the app is closed, the volume doesn't return to the level it was before the app was launched.

I'm using that volume button lock program as a stop-gap and hopefully a fix will be addressed in 2.2 or later.
