When you have a sudden loss of service in an area you've had service in before, call the carrier. If customer service doesn't know about it, call tech support. If they haven't heard of it either, ask them to take your call as the first report of it.

If it's just an area you've never been in before, and you find an area with no coverage - all carriers have areas they don't cover. And always will until we all use satellite phones. It's not the phone, it's not that the carrier is bad, it's just that they're not going to invest money to put up a tower and run a backhaul (connection back to a central office) for the 3 customers who are there every year. That's why the first thing you do to choose a carrier isn't look for price, or how many free phones you get, or which phones they sell - it's how well they cover the places you need coverage. And not on the street in front of the building you work in - sitting at your desk. What good is your phone if you won't even know that you're getting a call unless you go down the hall to the window?

So whether it's the phone or not, if you get solid service in other areas - no, it's not. But maybe T-Mobile isn't a very good carrier where you are. (Where I am, I haven't found a dead spot yet. With AT&T, there's a whole town nearby that has no service at all. But it wouldn't pay for them to build a new tower to cover that town.)

I have found too that an actual T-mobile phone works better than one that you bring with. I had an AT&T phone I had brought with originally and my LTE coverage sucked.

I looked up Grooveland, CA on a map.

I wouldn't trust T-Mobile to work out there.
