T-Mobile and Sprint Merger

I'd say not enough information yet, particularly if the FCC and FTC will let the deal go through -- though it is good Legere and Sievert will head the new company.

We've heard the same story before - "It'll be good for consumer", last time was with the Charter/Time Warner merger. As a customer impacted by that merger I can say it overall was BAD for the customer. Yes, we're now getting 100 Mb base internet speeds but I'm paying a higher bill and getting fewer TV channels as a result, and I was paying extra for upgraded download speeds compared to base (which I'm on now even though it's 3+x faster than before but TW was working on rolling out new speeds anyway).

I can say they will have a serious amount of spectrum. I am sure that makes AT&T / Verizon worried.

I am excited about it and hope it goes through. I was with Sprint for over 15 years before switching to T-Mobile just under two years ago. My experience with T-mobile has been a lot better compared to Sprint. Sprint always made false promises to keep customers here in WI especially when switching to the 4G network. I'm going back to the EVO/EVO Knight etc. It was always 4G would be here within a few months then it would change and it just never took off in a timely manner. There were constant service issues and with all the broken promises my bill always increased.

With T-Mobile when they say they are going to do something they do it and keep their word. T-Mobile may not be all that good in certain areas and Sprint may shine in those areas but that's where this deal would have an impact. So far there are very few areas I'm without or have limited coverage when travelling to the destinations I choose. I'm really excited about the deal and again hope things goes as planned.

Hopefully if their merger is approved and is allowed to proceed, then possibly in 2 or 3 years then Sprint might get rid of CDMA and of the GSM route and then Vastly improve their LTE Network where it will Improve on All fronts from Speed to Call Quality. And if the Merger is allowed to go through and Sprint eventually switches over to GSM, then the Choices of Phones would Vastly Improve. The only thing that would make it Better is that the Carriers Stop Crippling the Phones by telling the Manufacturers to Disable specific Features that the Manufacturers had originally designed into their Phones. The Only way around this is to purchase an Unlocked Phone.
Then if Sprint / T-Mobile will use a Global GSM Standard instead of the US GSM, then We could get the Better Spec Phones that are kept out of the US Marketplace.
Then, Pricing.
Hopefully if the merger is allowed, then the Pricing for All Tiers stays the exact same or when 5G comes online, then a tiny bump in Pricing and loose the Data Caps in reference to Throttling.

So will they go with GSM or CDMA signal? Just wondering. Either way, that's gonna cost a bundle and customers will definitely have to eat that cost.

Yes it's true that GSM and CDMA are not compatible. But "LTE" is a different technology. T-Mo and Sprint have been pushing LTE upgrades recently. So I'm sure they can tweek the towers to accommodate everyone.

Since I'm on Project Fi, I hope the only thing a merger will mean to me is that my phone will always be on the T-Mobile network.

This is, what, their 3rd or 4th attempt?

I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't think it will be bad just have seen this announcement before and it never came to fruition.

If it went through that means there would be no Sprint so yes.. You would be on T-Mobile.

I wonder if this means Google will try to negotiate another partner for Fi's service or if it will turn into a primarily T-Mobile MVNO then...

Less competition and larger corporations are never better for the consumer.
