Suggestions needed whether I should opt for tab 3 - 10 inch or note 10.1. I am not a big fan of S pen and my usage is primarily for - email, reading ebooks, worrying on word and excel documentations, watching movies and playing some basic games.

The '14 Note 10.1 is an exceedingly better tablet than the Tab 3 in terms of all the specs. However, it may indeed be overkill. You've got that high-resolution screen for brilliant crisp text and 3GB of RAM and that superior CPU. I think the Note 10.1 may be the better tablet to get if it won't be getting replaced for a while. However, if you know the use is going to be very light for the duration of the tablet's life the Tab 3 should be enough.

The 2014 Note 10.1 is much different than the original. So if people are asking questions about the original one in the original Note 10.1 forum, you probably don't need to bring up the 2014 version in every single thread you participate in. Unless of course you're in the 2014 Note 10.1 forum section. Do you also go to the old Nexus 7 forum to talk all about your 2013 model? There's a reason AC seperates the forums each generation.

As for the original question, I'd recommend the Tab 3 if you don't like or want the S Pen. I love the S Pen and although I don't use it every day or even every week, I love having it when I need it. However the Tab 3 would be good as well for the needs you mentioned.

Hard day at school? You have to realize (and it would appear that perhaps you do not) that with the AC Forums app it doesn't give that much information about the threads and the vintage of the device on the mains page (it simply shows '@Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1'), which is where I'm responding from. It's not the best system but we work with it. So the polite thing to do is for the OP (the OP) to say they're not looking for the '14 edition, if they get an answer that doesn't apply or is out of context. No harm no foul.

Absolutely. I didn't realize there was a separate 2014 forum until someone mentioned it because I use a bookmark to get here. Plus, many new users are confused and don't realize there are different versions.

While I agree with the other posters, you shouldn't pay for more tablet than you NEED. But I'd like to just play devil's advocate a minute..... I didn't think I'd use the S-pen or S-Notes at all. When I got my first Note, it was the first phone with a large screen and that's the ONLY thing I was interested in. I pulled out the S-pen just to see how it worked.... tried an S-note.... and pretty soon found out it was awesome to write something down and NEVER lose it. Within a month my purse was five pounds lighter because there weren't multiple printouts and scraps with lists, info, maybe scrawled somewhere so I couldn't thrown anything out. I never went to a store and forgot something, never walked into Home Depot wondering wishing I'd brought measurements along. Before you dismiss the S-pen, think about every time you pick up a pen during one day, every time you think when I stop at the store I'll remember that... and don't, and think about lost sticky notes..... I went from only being mildly curious about what it did to it becoming such an integral part of my life I bought the Note 10.1 when it came out. I love the multi tasking, I love having the web on one side and s-note on the other. Being able to copy text, and pasting it into a note. Whether it's the super duper elite 10.1 of 2014 or the original 10.1, they both have some pretty awesome features.

Thank you for valuable info. I don't need S pen because I hardly use sticky notes or take any notes using pen and paper. If need to take notes - I use keyboard typing, kind of lazy to do actual writing. Having said this, it looks like I should be fine with tab 3 as well. Is that fair understanding?

BTW - does tab 3 support phone service? This is must as some apps need phone service as prerequisite in Google play, although we can side load and it works fine. Some example are - MS LYNC, BBM, WHAT'S APP etc

When you ask about phone service do you mean whether or not you can make phone calls from the device? The only way you'd be able to do that is with VOIP as this device does not have voice radios like a mobile phone.

Yes, that's fair. I'm a touch typist and have several bluetooth keyboards that I pull out at various times.

Yes, some applications i plan to use require phone dialing service else they don't get installed directly from play store - play store gives error message that your device is not compatible. Although some of them do work quite fine if side load is done.

Is that not available in note as well as tab models?

Are you talking about the Android Central forums within their official app? Cause if so, I see it plain as day. If not, I recommend you use that because their app obviously does a far better job than whatever you're using if it doesn't even differentiate between models. I see that you comment a lot on these forums, and if whatever you're using doesn't let you know that the Note 2014 edition and the Original Note are two different forums, you should do us all a favor and find a better app or solution. I've always considered your posts to be helpful in the past. But they are nowhere near helpful if people are asking about the Original Note and all of your comments are about the 2014 version. Can you not see how this might cause some frustration? Especially when you confuse the two in almost every single thread i've seen you comment in recently.

No, the Android Central Forums app...the one that appears to be based off of Tapatalk. When I post on the go that's what I'm using. When I post from home I just use my PC. If I get similar feedback from more members perhaps I'll give up the convenience of the AC Forums app. Thanks.
