Take notes LG, the Moto Z is where modularity really at!

Same reply to a G5 owner then..

Who the hell needs... <insert LG Friend here>?

I'm talking about a projector in particular..... I didn't buy the G5 for its friends and by the way the friends aren't all modular and can be used with other phones besides the G5 so that's the difference.

Their battery module would be useful. I wish LG would make one. I dont want to carry a spare battery around, and have to reboot every time I need to switch, plus worry about charging both every night.

I have comments on the LG5 battery. But first, if anyone would care to respond to my questions on another post about video recording quality (and the audio recording that goes with it), at the following link, I'd greatly appreciate it (it's decision crunch time for me). http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-g5/669848-camera-question-ois.html

Although I like the idea of having a spare battery for special situations, I think the idea of swapping batteries more than once every couple of months is a bad idea for this phone. I think it will just cause something to break (feels like I'm tearing it apart). I wouldn't be surprise if someday LG starts advising against regular battery swapping, despite their current marketing.

I'm normally a big fan of extended batteries, but I don't think the G5 will be an easy candidate for one, with this particular modular design, unless someone comes up with a clever chin / case combination. And a battery case that plugs into the existing USB-C will make a tall phone even taller.

But here is why the battery on the G5 doesn't bother me at all. And in fact I like not carrying a boat anchor (extended battery) for the first time in a long time. Since it charges very fast, I won't hesitate to throw it on a charger for 20 minutes here and there if needed, whenever it is convenient as opposed to worrying about caring for the battery or the connector. I say misuse the heck out of it, and replace it in a year if needed. And the USB-C connector should be a lot more robust than the micro-USB. And even if something did happen, I doubt a new chin piece will be too expensive in a year. I do wish LG would have been willing to make the phone a little thicker to accommodate a bigger battery.

Forget the modules and put in a 4000 mAh battery and a headphone jack and hdmi out. #practical

It is odd to see people hating on the mods for the G5 when that was its nitch -- but now that Moto is doing it they don't matter now? Just odd to see such a swing.

It's all in the execution. LG's route looks downright clunky in comparison.

I could care less about add-on modules, That had nothing to do with my decision to buy the LG G5, why would I want something else to pack around. While I think it is Kinda cool you can add things to your phone, it would lose it's apeal fast, no matter how fast and easy they make it. Do you still pack around a Camera or do you just use your phone? Do you still use a day planner or do you use your phone? I-pod or phone? It is pretty plain to me all the Modules would be sitting in a drawer after a while, right next to your point and shoot camera and i-pod.

And like the G5, no one has to use the Moto Z with any of the MotoMods.

So calling out one specific MotoMod?

Again, just like the G5, people can buy a Moto Z and not use any of the add-ons.

The purpose of this thread wasn't to compare LG vs Moto in general. It was only to compare their approaches towards modularity.

Even if people don't buy the G5 for its modularity, it was marketed as one.

LG has completely forgotten about out sourcing their modules and almost given up on the G5. They can still compete if they start doing what Moto Z is doing.

You might not like the projector thing but I do. But even if you don't, watch Moto Z coverage, they're coming out with so many other amazing modules. Watch The Verge latest video report with the module with the screen on the back.

Now is the time for LG to really compete. Because they got competition. It's the golden time for LG to grab some attention. Bur they can only do that if they start innovating a bit and develop their idea.

If it feels like you're tearing it apart when removing battery you're doing it wrong

There aren't that many to call out that are worth talking about I don't care for the bulky add on battery either.
If you don't get the mods for the Moto there isn't much reason to get one. They way they treat their customers is reason enough not to.

No comparison.... Moto has lousy support. There's plenty of reasons to by a G5 or anything not Moto.... at least not until Moto improves their support and keeps their word. Like I've stated in the past I've been with Moto since the beginning, well before smart phones, before they got spun off to Motorola mobility, then Google, then Lenovo. Things actually were good under Google, but since Lenovo they suck.

Is there a modular headphone jack?... or a battery with any kind of real capacity? I don't see anything appealing about this phone. You should not have to pay extra for basic functionality.

Sure the G5 has its limitations... but at least it has a headphone jack and 2800 / replaceable battery.

Modularity at the expense of basic functionality... Easy PASS

I agree.

MotoMods is executed in a way better manner than LG's "Friends". They are easy to operate, can be attached and removed without doing a battery pull and subsequently powering-off the device and there are way more of these mods at launch, many of which are actually USEFUL.

However, I still long for the day where we can get a phone that has little-to-no compromise on its own and also has a universally-adopted modular standard that adds neat extras to the phone rather than adding what can technically be done without going for a modular design.

I don't see the G5 or Moto Z making significant compromises to enable their Friends and MotoMods though.

Everyone sees phones differently, but to me, the G5 had to sacrifice some build-quality and durability for its implementation while Motorola/Lenovo had to make the standard Moto Z really thin in order to ensure that the mods don't add extra bulk, but in the process, stuffed a small 2600mAh battery.

The closest to my dream would be the Moto Z Force. Reasonably thick and has a pretty large 3,500mAh battery, which also means adding a power pack mod to it would make it last even longer.

I think had Moto made the standard model slightly thicker to accommodate a battery of a decent capacity, users might not be so sour. Just my 2 cents.

I could see that.

Though with the G5, some of those build quality complaints when frequently opening up the phone to swap Friends don't happen if you leave the phone as-is.

I'm reserving judgement on the 2600 mAh battery on the regular Moto Z until we get some reviews or I get my own hands on it. People say the Moto X Pure Edition's battery life is poor but it suits my needs just fine. If I can get similar battey life from a Moto Z, it won't be an issue for me.

The lack of headphone jack is a total bummer for me. Maybe I'm old fashion and I don't want to carry around an adapter. I literally have a pair of headphones in a pocket of everyone one of my jackets. This would force me to have an adapter too. It just seems like they jumped the gun on removing it. Also, can you charge and listen to music simultaneously? For instance, when I'm using the GPS in my car. I'll often use the auxiliary jack to hear directions out of my speakers and sometimes I need to charge at the same time. Now I can't? I guess we'll see how this plays out.

Im sure Motorola is not trying to cater to the wierdos who keep a pair of headphones in every jacket they own....
