Task Manager/Killer Users

lol are you serious. Having 5 apps open will cause lag? And they call the Hero a multitasker...
It doesn't for me. I frequently have 6 or more open. I'm not sure what some folks are doing to get all this lag, because I've never had a single problem with it. But I'm not trying to manage my apps with a task killer either.

I also just uninstalled the taskiller from my sprint hero. I dont understand why my awake time is 100%. Ive been reading the site for a few days and hope that my new phone purchase wasnt a bad one. Im coming from a mogul. Hopefully ill get this battery issue straight soon.
Have you read the threads about the SMS app bug? If not, that could be your problem.

You did it all. Just remember that keeping those 5 apps open are going to be pulling from the system resources. I don't recommend keeping them open if you're not using them. All of them will perform when needed whether you keep them open or not.

This is probably what's causing your lag. I also only turn on GPS, BT & WiFi when I need them.

So this seems like it would be a stupid question but, how are you closing the programs without some kind of tastkiller app?

Ok after taking off taskiller I am seeing a gain in speed not much in the memory though but I do have copilot so I am guessing that might hold up a chunk. BTW I am using handset sms so I will see what happens in a week

First Android phone loveing it but I can't install to the a sd card without unlocking

I've noticed that some battery widgets will keep the phone awake the whole time. I found this with vizBattery. I did the battery fix and everything went to sleep as supposed to, and then I started installing one program at a time and checking it. Once I installed vizBattery and put the widget on one of my screens, my hero refused to sleep.

So how exactly do you shut apps down? I thought the Heros method of managing memory shut down unused apps after a certain amount of time?

Apps will shut down after a period of inactivity, I'll have to get the exact time from HTC. Also if you're running multiple apps and need more memory the Hero (well actually Android) will shut down the apps in order of last time used (longest going first).

What built in option/app can we use to check available memory? I'm referring to memory available for apps to utilize and not storage memory.

I tried this technique of uninstalling all task manager type apps and rebooting the phone, and after a bit of playing around with the phone in this state, it is NOT faster than before. As a matter of fact, i think it might be slower. I only have like 12 apps from the market installed which isnt that much and my device still can't manage to find ways to stay smooth. It just lags. I cant navigate between my seven homescreens without it jerking around and stuttering like crazy. I think i might just return this phone, i've tried everything to make it fast and it juts won't work.

I uninstalled my task killer and it definitely seems to have helped. The only time I ever really see lag is when scrolling in certain apps (Flixster movies, Touchdown email). Anybody else seeing this?

Does the Hero "Learn"?

After almost a week sans Task Manager/Killer here is what we've found so far.

  • The applications that automatically open themselves, no longer do so.

First off, what applications that used to automatically open, no longer open themselves? Does this mean that the Hero learns what you use most often? Did HTC tell you this?

I did what you said, but I have not seen any noticeable improvement in the past two days. In fact, think I have seen a decrease in performance. I used to have my Hero configured using Task Panel X as you detailed in another post and it was snappy like we are all looking for. I had to do a little more housekeeping, but it did what I wanted. I do think we all might like to have a little more control that we can understand... and that's why we all went straight for a task manager since that's what we know.

Yes, my results are the same as yours. Good thing is that whenever HTC gives us the update for Eclair, we will have a stock task manager.

same here, after trying to live without it for a little over a day, I am back to using taskpanelx and am much happier again. Im still curious to where hes getting the info on running apps and available memory without using some kind of task manager?

I stopped using task killer, because I hated thinking about "How much available memory do I have to run apps?". I just use my phone and do whatever I want to do. It's been running fine, maybe a little lag but that's expected with the processor that the phone has. All in all I'm glad with how my phone runs now.

Now if I could just get this dust out from under my screen I'll be happy :)

Sorry man, but I'm calling partial BS on this one.

First of all, you're chilling at 105MB of internal storage, NOT memory. There isn't currently a way to check available system memory without having a task manager like ATM or Task Panel X.

There's absolutely no possible way for you to know if those programs that automatically open themselves are doing it anymore (like peep, footprints, etc) without a task manager to see that they're open behind the scenes. After all, it was a surprise to us with ATM and TPX that those were even running, because we saw no instance of them at all. Without a task manager, you'd be blind to this altogether.

So, I call partial BS on this part of your findings.

However, I totally agree with your suggestions about letting it manage its own memory, and how the apps close after time and so forth. I think you're spot-on there.

I would say that as long as you're NOT auto killing anything, it's perfectly fine to use one of the task managers. For nothing else but to monitor apps that are running and memory. If the app is passive (meaning it's not actively managing apps by killing them) then how can it interfere with operations at all?

just my 2 cents, and I registered just to post this. I'm glad you're doing this with HTC though, this is a good thing!

One issue you might bring up with them is the fact that some apps, after updating to a new version, will revert back to their previous versions after a reboot, without notification to you. Some of those include Pandora, Advanced Task Manager, Mileage, etc. See this post at XDA Developers forum for more info:
App versions reverting without notice. Could be a major bug. - xda-developers

okay, lets see how this works!

i just took TasKiller off

if i get screwed, i'm blaming you, ERdude!!

LOL

I took my task managers off and so far it seems to be a bit smoother. I wonder about apps running though.. Even if I do not kill them off I wish there was something that let me see what was still running back there.
