The fingerprint sensor has to be the most useless/counterproductive feature of the S7

Anyone else have issues setting up fingerprint scan to unlock the phone? Everytime I go into settings and set the unlock via fingerprint it still doesn't work and I have to utilize a PIN. Only time it works with the fingerprint unlock is if I have a notification on the lock screen that I am trying to access.

I don't know what's wrong with yours to be honest maybe you didn't set up the fingerprints properly, as in registering your finger's prints from all angles when setting it up. Mine is flawless on the Note 5.

I think it registered the prints just fine. I noticed if I leave the phone for a bit and come back, the fingerprint unlocks it. But say if I am texting someone, lock the phone, they return message right away, it just asks me to swipe to unlock.

The S7 is miles ahead of my S5. On the S5 the fingerprint thing worked such that you were supposed to swipe your finger down over the button and it worked terribly. I do not have much trouble at all the way the S7's works. I just put my finger on there and bam, I'm in. :)

I ditched the fingerprint scanner on mine after about a week of owning the S7. What is the point of using something like that if it doesn't work every time, or at least 90% of the time? For me it was about 75% of the time, which just annoyed me and delayed me unlocking the phone. I think it is something I'll turn back on if/when I have a girlfriend again, so she can't go through my phone if I leave it unattended.

Haha that is odd you just instantly expect a gf to do that. Mine has never tried to sneak use my phone or go through it.

I've had my S7 for about 2 weeks now and absolutely love it, but I find that the fingerprint sensor is completely useless. More than half the time it doesn't recognize my fingerprint. It works a little better when I wipe it clean before using it, but even that's not a guarantee it'll work (and it's far more troublesome than simply punching in a PIN). I don't even have particularly sweaty/greasy hands.

I've tried resetting the fingerprint and it still doesn't work much better.

I've decided to just give up on the fingerprint authentication and go back to using a PIN.

Does anyone else have this same frustration?

Never had 1 issue with my S7E reading my fingerprint. You probably need to move your thumb around when you are putting in the print. 0 issues ever for me.

A rational person would read that and assume they had trust issues due to either their upbringing or a past relationship gone sour/bad.

I would love to hear more, but this isn't the place for that.

I don't use FP scanner but I tried it out and it was at least 95% fine. Perhaps reestablish fingerprints? Clean the sensor and/or hands?

About the only time I had trouble with it reading my prints is when I got some "Crazy Glue" on my fingertips. I got some on two of the fingers that I have registered with the phone. Some rubbing with acetone (on my fingers--not the phone! LOL!) got things working again.

Yes, I've also had continuing issues with the fingerprint sensor on my S7. It's a step up from the swipe style of the Note 4, but it's nowhere nearly as accurate as the one on my Nexus 6P... the 6P gets it right 95%+ while my S7 struggles to get a 50-60% first-try unlock rate. There are suggestions that people have come up with that can kind of help, apparently. When registering the fingerprint it helps to move your fingertip around some and trying to capture every part of it. It also apparently helps if you use multiple fingerprint slots for one finger, but because of the sensor's location at the front of the phone I personally want to use four different fingers so I can unlock from a variety of situations (two thumbs for when I'm holding the phone, two index fingers for when it's lying on a flat surface). Kind of stupid for them to only allow 4 slots, but whatever.

The best tip I can give that seems to improve the success rate is to use almost no pressure when holding your fingerprint to the sensor. Since the S7 needs to be woken up before it'll unlock using the sensor, I find that I typically end up pressing the home button to wake the phone. The force required to press the home button seems like it kind of smushes the fingerprints and causes it to fail to unlock. Pressing the home button to wake the phone, then lifting the finger to let the screen turn on, then very very lightly touching my fingerprint to the sensor seems to work with a slightly higher success rate.

You haven't dated the crazy women that I have!! Hopefully I never will again... You always gotta watch out for the ones that wait to show their crazy 6 months in

You know.... I got an S7 for my wife and I had the same impression. When I was playing around with it, I tried every trick in the book (multiple registers, different angles, etc) to get it to work right, but it was, at best, a 50/50 prospect.... and even then, I had to be REALLY deliberate on how I placed my thumb. If I had to daily drive with it, I would have pretty much just abandoned it and used a pin/pattern lock instead. Why was it so bad? I have no idea. Maybe it's my big thumbs, I dunno... but the accuracy was brutally bad, even worse when compared to my 6P, which is dead on almost every time unless I am just downright sloppy about it.

So I'm kind of with you on this one.

I don't have any kind of security setup on my phone. With the fingerprint scanner or any other kind of security do you have to go through that every time you turn your screen on. For instance, if I turn my screen off and then 30 seconds later turn it back on do I have to scan my fingerprint? That would drive me crazy!

You really should have some kind of security on your phone. You don't want people to be able to access your personal files if you somehow lose your phone/it is stolen. Anyone could get your phone and factory reset it before you could even wipe it.

You don't have to set up security to require your fingerprint just from turning off the screen within a few seconds. You can set it up to 30 minutes. It's your choice. It is very easy to touch your finger to the scanner (home button) to unlock.

I would say mine works on the first try about 85 to 90% of the time when I use my thumb, somewhat less than that when I used my index finger. It always works on the second try if I need it. I find it much easier that entering a PIN. To turn on my phone I just press and release the home button then keep my thumb resting on the button to unlock the screen. Way easier than taking my thumb off the button to type in a 4 digit pin + enter. In fact, I no longer turn off the screen lock when I'm at home, like I did when using a PIN.

Mine is the best! When you set it up you expose as much of your finger/thumb as you can from all angles and it's sweet to go. Mine never misses. And it's so handy, poke the home button to wake phone touch again and there it is, Nova launcher....
