The Galaxy Note7 has been recalled for battery issues

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

I hope they expedite this USB C certification program so that way controls can be implemented like Apple does with lightning cables. They're able to control if a cable can work with the device. If not certified it cannot charge or sync anything. We need USB C certification like that so we know immediately if a cable isn't good. Good thing for me I'm either using the Samsung cable or wireless charging so I should be fine but sucks in general this is happening or could happen.

re: Galaxy Note7 shipments delayed for "quality testing"

I wonder what will happen to those phones that would be covered in a recall if it happens, but bought unlocked through Amazon or another retailer unlocked. As those don't come with warranties, I would assume they wouldn't be covered. There's probably not that many in the wild, but still interesting.
I imagine it would be just like a car recall. It gets fixed or replaced, no questions asked.

re: Galaxy Note7 shipments delayed for "quality testing"

You've got one of the Exynos, correct? Is there any way for you to know if yours is one of the Korean versions?
No idea if mine has the battery from that specific supplier.

But it's not a Korean unit. It's an international unit with the model code SM-N930F.

If it helps, I've had it since August 18th and it has been on only Samsung chargers since the date of acquisition. Mainly on a cabled charger, but it has been on a fast-charging wireless charging stand twice.

re: Galaxy Note7 shipments delayed for "quality testing"

Well, a little update.

This doesn't really concern the battery but the phone as a whole.

Kelly linked me to an app that tells me a lot about the date of manufacture along with the location of manufacture for Samsung devices. As it turns out, mine has been made in Vietnam on the 8th of August.

If you're curious, you can give the app a shot in the link below.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

Do you have this from an official source?

No one knows if this is truly the case yet. But so far they have only identified the issue in the 8890 variant (which is the one sold in the Korean market which is the model they've reproduced the issue) So I'm assuming they're going to keep testing to see if they can reproduce in the snapdragon model. So for now, yes, they are saying only 8890. Can't do anything but see if they also make an announcement for the snapdragon version.

re: Galaxy Note7 shipments delayed for "quality testing"

Good question. I think a recall is a recall, under warranty or not. If you have one of the phones that's recalled it will be honored, I suspect.

I think this is right. Recalls **normally** are not limited to the original buyer even . Reciepts and such are generally not asked for. Model numbers and other unique identifiers are used to identify the units recalled, and those are all covered. Again, that is in my experience.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

BGR is reporting that Samsung is now saying they will likely offer a full refund or replacement phone to the affected devices. However, they're still saying that as of right now, it only affects South Korea.
I call B.S. until we get official sources.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

According to the report, if the recall is extended to other countries, and even more the US, they will specify which devices, likely by production date/place, are believed to be affected. They will then send you a battery, and you'll likely have to contact your carrier and find out their closest repair facility, and send the, your device. As far as a loaner, I've never had to deal with anything like this to need a loaner, so I'm not sure how the carriers would handle that part of the situation.
In the US they would likely switch out phones. There are only a few places to have batteries replaced without sending in your phone.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

If the Note7 is recalled, more than likely, they'll either replace the new battery or the entire phone.

They'll only do so if stock is available, in order to make the process quicker and less painful.

This seems to affect phones with batteries made by one specific South Korean subcontractor.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

Why would they recall? The only thing I have heard issues with is them holding shipments for Asian countries. Not the US?

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

I feel bad for Samsung when they are finally going strong with sales. Hopefully there won't be a recall outside of Korea.
Samsung phones are manufactured in two places, South Korea and Vietnam. Now it comes down to which would be included, the international version only or all.

Exploding batteries.

So far, they've pinpointed the issue down to a battery made by a South Korean subcontractor.

Not sure if any other phones are affected. They're probably running down the list now.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

Mine ain't gone boom, or showed any heat anomalies. A volatile battery usually shows it's cards early and also has capacitance issues (noticeably lower battery life and heat). If it is 56 ohm pull resister, to battery power control issue (can make battery go boom)- that is usually also on these newer smart batteries. Smart to a fault.

Point is the device battery module needs to account for cheap a$$ non OE cables, connector and power supplies. Even an OE product can have quality issues, so the battery control on the device needs to be the gate.

Exactly, which makes me think these reports are false.

re: Galaxy Note7 shipments delayed for "quality testing"

I have just been into a major phone shop in the UK (Carphone Warehouse) who have said all shipments of N7's have been stopped due to quality control issues.

Re: What happens if the Note 7 is recalled?

I remember reading about how a guy dropped his phone, but no cracks, because it was so hot after taking it off charger

I'm thinking that is only those manufacturered in SK. They only manufacturer in two countries.
