The "Help! How do I..." Thread

I'm coming from a Palm Pilot > Palm Treo > Palm Centro > Palm Pre genealogy of phones and the T-bolt is my first non-Palm device in more than a decade of using increasingly smarter smart phones. The question has been asked and answered so I just want to say that I really miss not being able to assign a ringtone to a group ("We Are Family" to my family group among others) and to assign a ringtone to a caller not found in the address book ("Who Are You?" by the Who).

If I've missed something, or there is a 3rd Party app that can handle this, please let me know.

Loving the transition to Android so far, BTW.

There's an app called WhoIsIt that allows you to set ringtones for unkown callers but I'm not sure about this groups thing. Sorry.

i downloaded some files (email attachements) and Swype installer by mistake. where can i see those files so i can delete them and free up the space? thank you

I don't know about the email attachments but if you go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications you should find your Swype in there I would think.

Can you change the color of your email tab when you have multiple accts? On my last TB I had like yellow / blue I think and now with new phone I have purple / teal? Is there a way to choose the color choices?

Very New to Android. Just got a Thunderbolt, had a storm 2. I used to be able to set an alarm on the storm, turn off the phone, then the alarm would work. I hear i cant do this with the TB. I have to leave the phone on or (sleep). Right?

Click and hold down your power button. A pop up window should appear, choose Airplane Mode (on/off). When you turn that on, your phone shuts off things like your phone ringer and some other stuff so you can sleep. But your alarm will wake you up. I use it every day :) so it works just like the Storm that way, just uses different terminology.

Also new to TB from storm 2. Is there any way to swipe or otherwise to minimize the keyboard? Sometimes I find when filling out stuff on the web I can't see what I'm typing because autoscroll has moved the form on the webpage. Aand sometimes he on screen minimize button isnt there. On my storm 2, I assigned the left hotkey to show / hide the keyboard to solve this small screen rendering dilemma but there is only a volume rocker on the TB.

Lower left corner, keyboard looking icon. Click that, keyboard goes away.

*sigh* so I have my pics and ringtones in folders on my laptop, how do I get them on my sd card?

I opened up Windows Explorer and copied them over. This was before I learned about Astro but I haven't tried Astro yet. My ringtones work fine when I put them in a folder called Ringtones or ringtones. For your notifications and alarms the path is:

media/audio/alarms
media/audio/notifications

When I put my ringtones like that:

media/audio/ringtones

I wound up with double and triple ringtones because I use ringtons for my alarms and notifications, too. I put them back under Android and then I only had the one list of them so I keep them there.

Plug your phone in to your computer via usb cable. Pull down notification bar and select disk drive. Then drag and drop.

I'm clumsy w/dragging that notification bar down. Found if you are on the home screen and click the MENU button, the slider comes down that way, too. A bit easier for me.

I have a task manager that kills apps, but probably also kills my battery as it is constantly running. Is there an easier way to stop apps without going into settings/applications and then selecting what I want to stop?

There is a thread on this, I think it's called "how to kill apps" or something like that. In there it says to not kill apps, that the OS does a fine job of it on its own.

I'm tired of looking thru posts for this. Just spent about 45 min looking. Supposedly there's a way to set a long push on the search button on the phone to turn off your screen. Anyone know how to do this? I know there's apps for this but I'm making an effort to do things w/the features available in the phone when I can. Thanks :)

Email attachments should be in your download folder... If you have a file manager like Astro... It will be on the sd card in the download folder.

I downloaded google maps and google streetview but i can't find it in my app tray or anywhere else. when i go back to the android market, it says i've already downloaded them. where should i look for them?

I there a way to see what is on my SD card like a external hard drive?

I thought that is what I would be able to do, like I could on my droid 2, but when I have it plugged in and set to disk drive, It comes up as A CD drive and when I exolore, I can only see two folder "drv" and "img" and then the TL bootstrap.exe and then another bbotstrap manifest. Is this what everyone else is experiencing?

Is there a way to view the files on my card like a external hard drive?

Google maps is listed as "maps" in your apps. To use the street view, you zoom in to street level, then long press on the the street. When it finds address, you click on it and it comes to a page that gives you options. Click on the little guy and it will let you do street view.

Hope that helps...

This is what I did if you want to put a picture that is the correct size from your computer onto your phone without using the verizon software.

What I did was basically, resize an image I liked to 960x800 using either photoshop or irfanview on my computer, then plugged my tbolt into my computer and chose the option of "mount as disk drive" in the options that come up, then a popup should come up on your computer giving you a few options on what to do with your phone. Close out of the one that has verizon on it, as there will be two popups. Now choose Open folder to view files which will let you see what's on your SD card. Then go to the folder named DCIM then the folder named 100MEDIA inside that. This is where all of your pictures will be. Drag the picture in there, go to your camera application and click the farthest left button to see your pictures. From there locate the picture, hit menu, then set as, wallpaper, then drag in the grey area to the left or right of the image to size it up all the way. Then click save and it will say cropping and there you go!

It sounds a lot more complicated than it is :p

i will try this.

I never heard of that.. why not just use the power button? Anyways here's a good article on using Androids search key: How to Make Good Use Of The Android Search Button

Does volume locker work?

I had the same problem - Volume Locker was the solution. You can change the volume using the rocker but it will reset to what you set up in Volume Locker after 20 seconds or so.

It activated itself randomly during phone calls and didn't work well - does it work for you guys?

I need some understanding the difference between the gmail app and the mail app. I have my gmail accounts setup in the gmail app, is there difference in how they handle gmail? Is it still push in the other mail app. i would really prefer to narrow it down to just 1 inbox instead of having to use 2 different apps. Coming from blackberry so I'm spoiled.
