The HTC One has kind of saved the mobile market...

Even if they did have the marketing money they don't have the name factor of Samsung or Apple, it'd just be wasted money. HTC hasn't saved any market with the S4 selling 10 million in under a month and on track to being the best selling Android phone of all time, and with the 5S more than likely selling more than that. They've managed to save themselves which is more important.

Next year is going to be interesting though. WP8 is slowly and surely gaining ground regardless of people's perception in this thread, it's looking like Sony might actually start selling phones on US soil instead of customers having to import them, the next iPhone will have a radically new design with a bigger screen, the Galaxy S5 will have a flexible screen, and with the help of some reviews and people in general bashing plastic, more than likely have a metal body. HTC is going to have to bring it again.

Let me address the first point by saying Samsung became a popular phone name for its memorable marketing against the iphone and Apple 'fanboys' in 2012. You can see this engraved in its stock history.
The second point makes sense because of the Windows phone making the same marketing ploy as Samsung did against Apple, but attacking both Samsung and Apple 'fanboys.'

What HTC needs to do is invest more money into its marketing. HTC can have a phone that can scratch your *** with a laser beam from space and you wouldn't pay much attention to it if it didn't have proper advertising.

I was speaking as it pertains to the HTC One, this is what the thread is about. HTC can market the One in the way you're talking about all they want, it will never catch the Galaxy S4 in sales, let alone the iPhone. Samsung was on the come up starting with the GS2 and went directly at Apple with every phone after, HTC is in a totally different position coming back from "the dead", if you will. Samsung didn't just become a player overnight like some are expecting HTC to be. I agree HTC to invest in more marketing overall, but they don't have the money to do it right now until some of the funds they've made off this phone has cleared. They should be in a better position marketing wise next year.

WP8 was growing before their Apple vs. Samsung commercial parody, and I don't think that commercial will have anywhere near the same impact as Samsung's commercials.

Nokia are not even in the game, they are estimated to have sold twenty million Lumia handsets in last 24 months, samsung are on track to sell ten million of the s4 in four weeks (and I say that as a Lumia user looking to get another).

You have me genuinely intrigued - why then, after saying those things are you still planning to get another?

Really sucks that HTC has to play catch up though. Pretty amazing how they fell off.

I am no fanboy. This time around I went with the HTC device because it impressed me more. Next time it might be Galaxy S5 or whoever else comes along. But it pains me to see the general consumer blindly choose.

After a few trips to best buys and radioshacks and sprint stores it's amazing how big of a no brainer the S4 is. Saw one guy today upgrading. The sales person showed him the two titans in the android world. He quickly dismissed the HTC one without even looking. He had a bad experience with an evo 3D and has never looked back he said. Hopefully HTC can do enough to repair it's image.

Also sales people push the S4 like it's crack. I'm ignorant to how the business and commissions work so I have no idea why they push it so hard. But just something I have noticed.

Because I can separate out what is happening in the market with what I need in a phone, that I think Nokia is an also ran doesn't alter the fact that a cheap Lumia does everything I need in a phone and I have a nexus 7 for everything else.

I'm one of those who made the switch from Galaxy s3 (international) to HTC One.... and i'm LOVING it.
Loving everything from the feel of the device, to the camera performance in low light. Actually able to get great photo's in venues where flash is not allowed and the lighting is usually horrendous for anything less than a DSLR.

In terms of marketing, never underestimate the value of word of mouth (or in this day and age - bloggers and reviews).
In terms of the modding community, the HTC One is quite active with already a CM10 alpha undergoing nightly testing, many custom roms and kernels already out and quite an active forums.
It is quite a viable option if u want a phone that won't be dead in the eyes of the public a few months after release.

I don't consider myself a fanboy since i've never stuck to a particular company for more than one generation if another company makes a better product, and in this case, HTC has won me over for this round. HTC needed a winning product to stay in the game, and I think they hit a home run with the HTC One.

Word of mouth is useful but it is not going to turn around the fact that HTC has a couple of hundred million to advertise and market with while Samsung has billions.

HTC left a bad taste in my mouth also and millions of other users, everybody I no that has a iPhone that use to have a android all said I would never go back to android because of some line of HTC phone mainly the Evo...and now that HTC has created a design opening for android&low light emphasis on camera trust me Samsung will take both ideas for next year and probably do them even better....

I think that something that is being missed here by a lot of commenters is that its not weather the One will catch up to theiphone S3 and S4 in sales its that it will outsell most other phones and be more than just a blip like most other devices. Its going to give HTC a renewed brand recognition and an infusion of cash that are going to help them next year and the year after that.

My English language isn't that great, but this is difficult to read and is borderline incomprehensible. HTC left a bad taste in millions of people's mouths because??? What survey did you read that provided some type of statistics? For example here is one that was taken last year regarding user satisfaction:

iPhone 5: Satisfaction rating in the U.S. falls to fifth place | BGR

The OG EVO, which was the first Android device considered to be a legitimate challenge to the iPhone, caused the majority of these people (millions?) to go back to Apple because??? What superior Android device was on the market during that time frame, that could have convinced these "people" to remain loyal to the Android platform? What is a design opening? Nokia marketed the low-light capabilities of their devices long before HTC (to include their PureView technology). Not to mention they took a different approach to achieve their results. I Also, Samsung is going to take someone else's idea and probably do them better, because we should take your word for it and "trust" you?

Nobody really wants either of those phones though, so........

So, by that logic, Nokia and LG should just not make phones anymore because "nobody" really wants them.

Sorry to sound like an ***, but that statement is the farthest thing from the truth.

Nokia is essentially revitalizing their company on the success of their Lumia line, and the LG Optimus Pro is getting nothing but positive responses from what I have read.

Just remember that the US and UK are not the worlds only market for smartphones. Nokia has been a huge leader in phones all over the world. They continue to thrive due to windows phone and have helped push the platform into third place, passing blackberry.

I am not writing this to start a flame war or argument, just stating a fact that Android and iphone aren't the only devices sold worldwide, and the htc One hasn't shown me anything yet to believe that they have saved a mobile market that never appeared to be on life support of any kind.

No, I think I've covered that ;).

One thing though is that HTC didn't get into this situation with one phone, it's going to take more than one phone to get them out.

This is just a case of someone wanting their phone to be something it isn't. What it is, however, is a damn good phone. That should be enough.

This sums up this thread.

I get what OP is trying to say but it's too little too late.

All I meant with this thread is that it's nice that the One is garnering some major attention, particularly with the general public. This didn't need to become a 3 page pissing contest.

No it doesn't. It won't even come close to selling as many phones as either the S4 or iPhone 5/5S. It's a great phone, but that statement is false. If it makes you feel better to believe it, though, then by all means.

It doesn't mean that they out sell apple and Samsung. It means that there is a phone to compete. Most other phone brands don't even get the notoriety of that of Samsung and apple. HTC has been getting the hype and talk about the One.

Unfortunately it seems that people just love arguing too much (especially in forums) and everyone thinks they know everything about everything. If the title of your post was "The HTC One brings good competition to the mobile market" it wouldn't have given people so much to feed on. :) Why people can't just constructively comment I have no idea. No, HTC didn't "save" the mobile market but it did infuse some much-needed life and variation. I'm an HTC fan. I had a Nexus One and a One X. I currently use the One and my wife uses the 8X (arguably the best WP8 handset though Nokia gets all the attention). Boomsound is great. The phone is fantastic. I had a Note 2 for a while and it was fine but the One is a great change of pace. A different flavor, if you will. My iPhone 5 looks physically similar to my iPhone 4S and iOS hasn't changed much. The Note 2 is a bigger GS3 and the GS4 is a more refined GS3. There's nothing wrong with those phones, they're all fantastic but the HTC One stands out as something different. I pray it saves HTC because they're capable of great things. In the end we all think our phone is great, after all, we picked it. And guess what? We're all right. Any flagship phone today is a great phone and some midrange models are pretty great too. There's no wrong choice and HTC has given us a great phone that hopefully translates into great sales numbers.

Aside from positive reviews on tech sites, what real attention has the One gotten? It won't put a dent in anything Samsung or Apple is trying to do. People need to stop trying to act like this phone is on that level. It can easily compete with them if you compare them on how they look or function, but it isn't a phone that's going to make a difference on how much Samsung or Apple dominate the market.

I'm an iPhone user and if the One comes to Verizon I will be ready to go back to Android. I've been looking for an android phone that has a quality build and isn't all plastic.

Where is your source if this? Has HTC released sales numbers yet?

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2

I'm not quoting sales numbers. I'm talking about the hype and publicity of the phone. The hype and publicity helps with sales in general. Most brands make comparable or better phones than Samsung and HTC and apple but not having it publicised makes a different of how many are sold.
