The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

I actually wish LG took the Sony route and release an optional stock Android-based ROM that's similar to a GPe ROM for those who want that Nexus-like experience but want the features of the G4.

And maybe even do what Google is currently doing with Android N, and that's allowing those with eligible devices to download beta software if they want to.

Again, I couldn't agree more.

I think I know what to expect.

The S7 will pull ahead in low-light while the G4 might have a small advantage in daylight.

Yeah in theory. But I'm going in not expecting anything before hand.
And to make sure I won't be biased towards any of those two, I'll put them both against the phones I know they can't beat, namely the Nokia's 808 and 1020. And who knows...maybe just to make a point, I'll throw in the Z3C just to see the exact extent of how bad Sony's cameras are on Xperias :P

So, my G4 arrived today, and so far it's working as it should! Still setting up everything to my liking. But it's oh-so-fast with barely any additional apps installed! I got back my original phone again (s/n 505X).

It came preloaded with MM (6.0, H81120i, build MRA58k used in T-Mobile), which was a nice surprise. I also noticed some apps like Pandora for MM are new, and look very nicely designed.

I guess if it lasts until tomorrow (lol) I will put my S7 shopping plans on hold. I really like the G4, but as others have stated, it's unsafe waters once the phone fails.

To those with repaired units back in hand, how has the phone been?

I also had a 505 fall into boot loop and received a 505 as a referb. My first G4 was good, really good in fact. Then fell into boot loop. My second G4 (the referb) seemed to run just a bit smoother. Then Marshmallow came and it really makes me wanna keep this phone. But like you said. I can't. No point in living in fear that my phone might die at and moment, through no wrong doing of my own.

Same thing happened to my wife. She gets awful battery life though. It's also her work phone. She also use the Facebook app, I do not.

Well, the 1020 is basically a camera that can make calls. xD

And I can't take Sony's camera marketing seriously until they implement actual OIS for photos while utilizing their DIS for videos. Their dedicated cameras are excellent. Their phone cameras less so.

So I'm on Sprint and this happened to my G4 on Wednesday (3/09). It's a 508. I was wondering, will Sprint replace/repair the phone for free without TEP? I didn't buy it from Sprint (got it on Swappa a few months ago).

I went into Sprint yesterday and they said they'd charge me $75 for a replacement, but it wasn't a corporate store, and the person that helped me seemed very new (she didn't even know how to check my account). I'm using my rooted G2 in the meantime so I can mail it off if need be.

LG is afraid the carriers will seek revenge if they gave us consumers something excessively useful and sensible.

I think your best bet is with LG direct. I'd be surprised if a non corporate store could be of any help.

Thanks for that tip. I spoke with LG chat support and they emailed me a shipping label without any fuss. Now I just have to wait a couple of weeks.

So my G4, after app installations and updates, is holding its own. So far everything is working as expected, with no hiccups yet. I hope this is the real deal, and that we don't end up with a live grenade in our hands :-)

Although I don't disagree, why should Sprint give new phones if other carriers and LG aren't replacing with new phones?

I guess it'd be a goodwill gesture, be it the carrier or LG, as this is obviously not an isolated issue. At the very least they could offer clients some sort of incentive, discount in accessories, or work out something with the carriers to try and retain them as LG clients.

Went to Sprint to get my replacement. It was another 507, which didn't have Marshmallow installed. I downloaded the update to Marshmallow, and did a reset to get everything installed fresh. Here's hoping they really DID get all the older ones repaired. Would hate to go through this again. Although, if it does 6 or 7 months down the road, maybe I could convince them to replace at that time with a G5.

So, I was putting off Marshmallow update until I could do a full dump of all my files, etc which meant canceling the request every few hours. Well, sometime yesterday morning without me realizing, something happened and it did the update but must have fizzled out in the middle and next thing I know, I boot and only get LG splash screen to blank screen. I can get into recovery mode but safe start ends at LG splash also. I wiped cache. Still nothing. I do the freezer trick for a while and it not only makes it to the Verizon splash screen, it even gets to the optimizing apps for the update screen. Gets about 14 out of xxx and then fizzles out. I noticed that each time, I got a different total number (the xxx) 108, 126, 112, 116 and 2 others I can't remember off hand. So, I left it in the freezer again for around 3 1/2 hours and it made it all the way past ALL the optimizing and then to the regular log in screen. I ran my backup program and got about 20% through my contacts when it fizzled out. This time though, it said, "Invalid battery. Shutting down." and then shut down.

Back in the freezer now but I expect after another 3-4 hours, I will have enough time to backup my contacts, calendar and texts.

A question though. would the condensation when it warms up after removing from freezer affect the "water damage indicator" little dot and make it seem like the phone got wet? What should the color of the dot be if it was never wet and what color if it did get wet?

It's a 505 by the way.

EDITED - UPDATED

So, it finished the optimizing and I was able to do a Superbackup of my contacts and email to myself before it shut down again. Rebooted into the optimizing thing again. x of 109, then x of 21, then x of 2 and then kablooey. Froze it some more and tried again a few times but nothing. Then, booted right to the home screen! Got all my texts, call logs and most of my calendar. Now looking make sure I got all my calendar entries and make sure there aren't any pictures or videos which isn't likely. My wife and kids think it's humorous I have my head and arms inside a freezer working on my phone. LOL!

Out of curiosity why don't you keep your contacts and calendar synced to Google? Other than not trusting Google or the cloud (I won't argue with that personal preference), I don't get why folks don't do this. By the way, I backup my sms messages nightly to my Google Drive account. There are some excellent apps for that.

Yes. It's a trust issue. I'm an attorney so I prefer to keep all my files locally. I generally do backups on a regular basis and the last one was from a few weeks ago. I wanted to retrieve everything in-between.

Paranoid much? ... a few, and I mean a FEW, people have G4s that go bad. Not the rest of us who own the phone. Blown WAY out of proportion. Mass hysteria and [language]The phone is fine. Don't believe everything you read.

Where have you got your figures from? What do you consider to be a "few" people? How many people would this have to happen to for you to consider it to be a real problem?

Hahha, I don't think they realise it tbh. They're just somebody else who thinks that it's not a big problem just because it hasn't happened to their device
