The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

With the HTC 10 and others like the Moto X 2016 coming in, might be a good idea to wait a little longer.

I'd pass on the HTC 10 due to screen size. Moto X 2016 may be very good. I'm underwhelmed with what I know so far about the G5. I had high hopes for that. S7 Edge nice but don't want to spend that much on a phone.

The HTC 10 did tempt me to wait. I gotta gut feeling it's gonna be a beast.
The HTC 10 definitely looks like a comeback device so far.

What it needs is a killer camera that is able to be competitive with the Galaxy S7 and LG G5. LG hasn't changed the main camera all that much in 2016 (although it still takes great shots, supplemented by a wide-angle 8MP camera, which is a novelty, but a nice one at that) while Samsung has that ludicrous dual-pixel autofocus. If HTC does put a great camera (rumored to be the same one from the N6P but with OIS) combined with solid post-processing, they've got a winner.

Do you want to have a discussion or just want to vent. If you want to vent that's ok too :)
The sky is not falling. For example, the owners of G4's that I know from this forum - early adopters - still have working phones - never boot looped. At least not yet.
Blaming "spend their life backing up" due to the bootloop issue is a specious argument. It's good practice to keep phones backed up. A ridiculously high % of phones will get lost or stolen, dropped, submerged in toilets, etc

Like I've mentioned many times, IMO LG could be doing a much better job in how they treat their customers. They should extend the warranty for bootloop issues and should be replacing the suspect motherboards upon request.

It's not a question of venting, really. I've had a problem with my G4 and I simply replaced it with an S7.
Now, let's see: we've seen reports of various DIFFERENT phones giving problems. The same problems. What was supposed to be restricted to phones with the S/N 509 and prior, turns out to be a problem that affects G4's randomly. We've seen here alone G4's with various S/N's failing. We've also seen reports of terrible customer support on both sides of the Atlantic by LG.

As for "spend their life", you MUST realise that the average Android Central user is NOT the average user. A "normal" person doesn't go around backing up their phones. Doesn't matter what's "good practice", they won't do it. To the average consumer, the good practice is a 600€ phone (on launch) not dying out of nothing merely months after purchase. Or a 600€ phone having bad quality customer support from LG.

I honestly know of no one who owns a G4 that didn't have a problem with it. Heck, even the store manager of the Samsung Store where I bought the S7 had a G4 and had problems with it. The fact that so many G4's have problems simply indicate that there's serious quality control problems at LG's manufacturing which MUST be addressed. And given how bad the reviews on the G5 hardware have been, it seems that they continue.

That's why I think the odds are not in any LG's customer favour.

Dial this:

Then choose "battery information"
"Connection problem or invalid MMI code"
Goddammit

Only thing I can say at this point was that it got pretty hot to the point where the screen itself was hot. Not a surprise on most phones I've used, but on this one, it's actually hot to the point where touching it is uncomfortable.

Woke up today and saw this. This happened to me once at work. I got home and promptly backed up/factory reset. Seemed to solve the problem. Trouble is, a couple of months later it died. That really sucks, I had no such issues with my refurbished G4. That Note 6 might be too far off. Whatcha gonna do? Simple curiosity.

Don't get upset. Google "lg g4 hidden test menu <your model number H818 for example>"

More here.

But I strongly suggest you install the app "OS Monitor" - it will give battery temp and more importantly what processes are consuming the most CPU (and battery). Is there any chance it could have been syncing lots of data to the cloud or reinstalling apps? In OS monitor battery temp is under the column "Misc" - mine is 28.0C at the moment and phone pretty much idle. The Process tab shows CPU Usage %.

Wow you really do hate LG! Like it's the "Negan" of cell phone companies. I like my G4. It's been a great phone. Best I ever hadI don't like the cloud over it that it might bootloop. I'm still optimistic that LG will step up to the plate and extend the warranty for bootloop. Glad you like the S7. That wouldn't be my first choice. Screen too small and if I was getting a phone with non-removable battery it would be a 6P.

Over at the S7 forum there are complaints of random reboots, mediocre battery performance, etc etc. Proof you can't please everybody.

And there goes the typically-silly "ohh you must hate company X".
Yeah. I hate LG.
That's why my PC monitor is from LG.
All the 4K TVs in my house are LG's.
The soundbar is from LG.
My PC blu-ray player is from LG.
My Android Wear watch is an LG GWAR.
And even my air-conditioning unit is LG's.
Because I hate LG.

The S7 wasn't my first choice either. Samsung was deep down in my list of choices. Below them only every single Chinese OEM (Huawei, Xiaomi etc) and Apple. But LG's phones are simply not up to my high standards. I got the G4 because of the camera. And it is a great camera. But I can not tolerate a 3 month old phone to die suddenly of motherboard failure AND LG taking 3 weeks to repair it.
True, I've always hated the size of the G4 (even the S7 I'd like it to be smaller) but the camera was the reason I was putting up with a mini-diner tray in my pocket. But after the phone suddenly die and LG Mobile's horrendous customer service, it's simply not worth it. Specially when SO many people are facing the EXACT same problems. At this point LG's orders should have been to immediately replace the phones, not "repair" them.

As for the warranty issue, well, I'm European. LG is bound to a 2 year legal warranty. And the time is suspended during repair. Often companies try to evade this suspension but if you take it to any Court, your rights will be quickly upheld.
But it's not that that should worry LG. It's the utter lack of control quality in manufacturing. The LG G5 is barely out and there are already customers returning phones due to hardware and production problems. This is most definitely NOT worthy of LG. If this is to go on like this, I would honestly rather LG quit the mobile phone market than to tarnish the entire brand over crappy mobile phones.

LG has 5 divisions - Home Appliance, Home Entertainment, Air Conditioning, Energy Solution, Vehicle Components and Mobile Communications.
I thought I was pretty clear when I wrote - "Negan" of cell phone companies - that I was referring to Mobile Communications division.

LG has dropped the ball with how they are handling the bootloop problem. I consider it to be more of a manufacturing defect than a quality control issue. And it appears that the G5 has QC issues, but I doubt that the average consumer will notice, unless they read about it. LG earned a profit of around $1 per G4 sold. Maybe that's why they are acting irresponsible toward G4 owners? It's sad how LG has fallen from last July. But I don't hate them.

I have now had this issue on 3 LG G4's - two SN 505 and one SN 507. All 3 died in the past month... great phone for 9 months prior. All phones running Android 6.0.

It's not only the bootloop problem. The motherboard failures are a different problem. So you actually have two major issues hitting the G4: either random bootloops or a complete motherboard failure, which is what happened to me. I haven't got the bootloop...so far (though it'll be hard to tell now since the G4 is back in the box).
I mean, this guy alone had 3 G5's and all of them had build quality problems.
If LG was only making $1 profit per unit, that must be when the price of the G4 had already dropped by half just 6 months after release. Because otherwise OEM's seldom make so little profit on flagships. On the G4 though, if that was the reason why they're acting the way they are, that only shows how amazingly stupid whomever is in charge of LG Mobile is. Customer service and quality control is what keeps customers faithful to the brand. That's how Nokia was able to even convince so many of us to use Windows Phone in the past. That's why Apple has such a good reputation in the US for customer service. If LG - who is nowhere near the top anywhere - thinks that it's by mistreating their customers that they grow the business...well, they're in for a deserved bad surprise.

As for the G5, so far I've seen complaints about que finishing quality (which shouldn't be a surprised on painted phones...), an uneven gap between the module and the phone and screen bleeding. And the phone hasn't been out for a week.
If they keep it like this, they risk to go the same path as Sony is going. Which is really sad since both companies can produce great products (specially Sony. Their Compact line is amazing...apart from the completely rubbish cameras).
