The no-so-Epic 4G ?

I have an Evo and quite frankly the battery life on it is fair for a smartphone and carries me easily through my workday. The battery life on the Epic is not as good but nothing like the OP's experience. I have a few issues but nothing big, still trying to figure a few of them but nothing major. Seems there is certainly an issue with quality control if the experience of some users is so different in terms of battery life and other issues, or perhaps I am very lucky.

What I'm afraid is going to happen is I'll change carriers (for whatever reason) and *that* will be the one that Apple goes with in 2011. I don't care who it is, I don't want to be on that carrier.

I have no problem with buying a spare battery if I feel I'll just be away from the charger for so long that I'll actually need one. I'm not going to buy a new battery just because the device is overly power hungry or the battery is defective.

I also buy a spare battery solely for those times I will not have access to charging for a prolonged period of time. I was just making mention of this fact because 1) It IS at least an option that we have and 2) I like to take every opportunity I can to bash Apple. ;)

I haven't had any issues with my phone. I read these threads and wonder if my Epic just happens to be the chosen one.

I always carry two batteries for my SLR.

Why am I soo opposed to having two batteries for my phone?

I use my android more, and get far more enjoyment from android.

Android need power.

I should just get over it!

Here we go again...

Here's my response to that:

1. The SLR is a specific purpose driven device. You use the SLR to take pictures. That's it. The reason this is different is if the battery is dead, you've lost the *entire point* of having the camera (to take good, quality pictures). The Epic is (imo) a handy device. It's nice to be able to look stuff up when I'm on the road away from a PC... it's not necessary though.

2. I *expect* that I'll use enough of the battery on the SLR that I may need a second battery. My phone, with average or sub-average use, I expect to get me through the day. I don't go nuts. On a given *WEEK*, I might be on the phone (actual voice call) for an hour, maybe 30 texts and some light browsing / multimedia. While being conservative (turning off the display, wifi, etc) when not in use, there's no reason this shouldn't happen.

3. I have a feeling your SLR is possibly more power hungry than the Epic is.

4. We've covered "get another battery!" several times... please read the thread and move on.

You can be a lot nicer. His comment wasn't even directed to you. You obviously have something wrong, either app related, phone related or battery related as this isn't an issue on most Epics. Sure, the battery could be better, and with a radio upgrade, I truly believe it will be. But it isn't terrible.

Going back to the OP, the bottom line is that if you have about 25% of battery left less than 5 minutes after a full charge you have a defective battery or phone.

Being that he didn't quote who he was replying to, the previous posts had nothing to do with what he posted about, and the threads' topic (which I made) *does* concern battery life, why wouldn't I think he was directing it toward me?

As for being nicer, I thought I *was* being nice (seriously). Can you explain (in PM if you must) how I wasn't? There was no name calling or gnashing of teeth, I answered his question and even suggested that he please read the thread (as most people tend to read the first and/or last post when they reply).

As for the battery life, the phone has been on the charger for the last 4 hours or so and I took it off about 10-15m ago. Battery indicator still shows 100% I'll leave it on the charger tonight to see how it holds up tomorrow and report back.

Well, I would figure that would be the issue. As it is, the phone will say 100% and not quite be 100% charged. Reading this forum shows this is a known issue. Generally that's the issue I'm having that it'll say 100% and checking a few minutes later shows a noticeable decrease in battery life, but not a drastic 75% less.

Starting off with "Here we go again..." doesn't really set off a good mood.

I am honestly loving this phone. Bought me an extra battery if needed. I can barely make a day with moderate use. Hopefully it will get better with froyo but even if it doesn't this is the best phone on the market for me

I do NOT feel cheated I mean off course better battery would be in due time Im hoping for at least 6-8hrs with heavy use and ill be content, I wish people would stop complaining I mean buttons not to sensitive then they are then its just a lot of UGH! but idk I like my phone, if someone doesn't like theirs they are still in the 30 days so go get your money back and leave the rest of us in peace to enjoy our phone....I love swype, I love the keyboard, I LOVE this phone and android so far no major complaints NOTHING is perfect nor did I intend this phone to be, I knew what I was getting myself into prior to purchasing - THE EPIC DESERVES ITS NAME AND WILL SOON HAVE THE MEDIA HUB, 2.2, WHAT MORE COULD U WANT?? BEST OF ALL WORLDS, AND WE HAVE HARDWARE FOR 3.0 GINGERBREAD! .....

From my understanding of android some task manager apps and others are counter productive to the system and cause more problems then good, so maybe just be satisfied with the STOCK app manager, I mean the app market is to ADD to user functionality NOT provide CORE functions, I'm going to leave that up to the manufacture to supply that..... O lets all take our batteries in to have Sprint test if its a bad battery or not.... post back results

Admittedly, it may not have given the warm and fuzzy vibe, but neither does the "just buy a spare battery, you do it with other products!" type of comment. In either case, I don't think either of us were trying to be offensive and I apologize if anyone took it that way.

Hell, if I got 6-8 hours of heavy use I'd be thrilled. I'm hoping for 17 with light / moderate use. That'd get me from when I get up (~6am) to when I go to bed (~11pm). If I can get a days use out of it, I'm happy.

I've said several times I really do like my phone and the potential that it brings. I'm also glad that you've (hopefully) gotten a "good" one and have no major complaints. If you'd rather not read the threads where people do have issues, then why not just not read them? The issues should be addressed and hopefully resolved somehow, don't you think?

The only form of task manager that I've actually used is JuiceDefender (paid version) and Tasker, which only turns on/off the radios at specific times to conserve battery power. I have heard that task killers such as Advanced Task Killer can cause more harm than good, but that's not what I'm using.

Going on strong at 14 hours...With 40% left.

I love everything else about this phone, but the battery just sucks. Really, really badly.

For the first time, I am considering taking it back.

Just to point out keeping 4g on all the time is known to kill the battery extremely quick on both the Evo and the Epic. 4g should only be on when your using heavy data like streaming videos. If your keeping 4g on you should only expect 4 or 5 hours that's just how it is right now currently being the new technology it is.

I don't know what I am doing right but I get great battery life. it lasted all day yesterday 8 am to 3 am where its was down to 5% and I. Would say that I usw the phone heavily I browsed on the internet for about an hour and a half on wireless and sent about 40 text messages. I also checked my mail 4 times. I don't know what you guys are doing wrong. I have push disabled and I am using launcher pro but that's about it.

I've been around here since the original Droid release, and for each phone, there is always a thread that starts out similar to this (with plenty of follow-up posts in total agreement):
Perhaps I'm jumping the gun on this, but after reading some threads on this forum, does anyone else feel a bit... "cheated"? I mean, it was my understanding that the Epic was supposed to be the "best of the best"; at least for the Galaxy S series of phones, but the more I use mine (picked it up on launch day), the more I get aggravated with it; and almost entirely because of the battery.

And many follow-up post(s) similar to this:

Nah, I love mine. Amazes me more everyday

The best I can tell is that each phone has manufacturing issues that affect some but not others & The way in which people use their phones can vary greatly, affecting battery life, performance, and their experience in different ways. Oh, and that every new to Android thinks they need a task manager.
