the S4 was never going to meet expectations

as far as the speakers go, i had a casio commando that had front speakers and it was the loudest phone i have had. the sound was beautiful!. i would love to see front speakers, but as companies are stretching the screens to the very edges of the phone there is simply not room.
on the plus side, my note 2 sounds good when layed on its back, and the sound coming from the speaker bounces off the flat surface, it actually adds to the sound. i dont think that is the reason they put them on the back, i would still say its because they dont use up screen space there.

either way, great discussion.. thanks for helping me kill time on my day off!

So you don't risk cracking the screen while it rides in your jeans/pants pocket so you can hear the damn phone ring out in public! I have no idea why you would want the speakers on front with the screen for this matter! And no, I don't want it to vibrate because it kills your battery quickly!
You'd want the speakers on the front when you're watching video without headphones. In that situation you lose a lot of sound from the speakers being on the back.

What hype?

What's wrong with keeping it "super secret" up until the announcement? Isn't that what they're supposed to do?

What's wrong with an upgraded S3?

Seriously? What were you expecting? lol.

I was expecting something entirely different than the s3. I didnt think Samsung was gonna go all Apple on us.

you have to remember, WE were the ones creating the hype, NOT samsung. we cant blame samsung because we searched and speculated for months about a product they were keeping secret.

i still hold to the idea that samsung went the next logical step in a series, the galaxy line... they never said (to my knowledge) that they were working on something other than a galaxy phone.

my note2 looks like a bigger galaxy SIII, but thats ok.. because its in the galaxy line of phones

I think it might not be a Apple thing as most would contribute. I see a lot of phones where the next version of it looks very close if not identical to the old.

With how much Samsung has "copied" Apple in the past, I think more people expected Samsung to "Apple" us.

I don't know why people are disappointed... they let their own thoughts run wild and are disappointed when Samsung doesn't match those thoughts?

Samsung didn't tell anybody to expect the Galaxy S4 would drive you to work in the mornings and cook you dinner... so I don't see how you can blame the phone for not meeting your expectations. If anything you should be hard on yourself for not being realistic.

If its not broke, don't fix it just tweek it, and ride the MONEY wave (just made that up :D)........the SG4 will make a lot of money.......PERIOD

Granted we the people played the Hype up, Samsung definitely didnt help with its advertising as the next big thing, because its not the next big thing, its just the next thing. GS4, same as GS3, more features, minimal increase in screen. Im not mad at em, frankly i could care less what the GS4 looks like, it has touchwiz on it, but for you guys to say samsung had nothing to do with the hype is like saying the Bank has nothing to do with money. its laughable.

Regardless of the product that is eventually announced/release, do you expect Samsung to not call their next "the next big thing"? lol.

I'm not so sure that the S4 was a deal breaker but I think to many it was a let down... Many had high expectations....

My personal thoughts is were going to see current and future devices over the next 6 months maybe even a year or more lean more towards software upgrades and improvements. Hardware will take more of a backseat and we will see OEMs concentrate more on redefining and tweaking their UI's around Android.

I agree completely. As a programmer myself I know I would have been fired 100 times over if I put into production buggy, non working software like these companies do. I had the HTC Thunderbolt, advertised for its ground breaking 8 mb camera and its video, but it shipped without the ability to record sound with the video, WTF? Who tested that out and signed off on it? You can make the hardware as fast as you like but if the software doesnt work its not that fast is it?

But thats exactly my point....you cant just blame the consumer solely.....blame also has to fall on OEMs.....we expect to much, and they dont deliver enough....it's a never ending cycle.

You = a minor bump from Samsung's last big thing can't possibly be the next big thing.
Samsung = we updated our best-selling flagship device, last year's next big thing, to make it bigger and better. here's our next big thing.

Caught up in marketing. lol.

so that makes the S4 the best phone available, and everyone should join the herd, i could care less how much Samsung makes,

"The Next Big Thing" is just a slogan... you can't start having some crazy expectations just because the company has that slogan.

BMW's slogan is "The Ultimate Driving Machine"... if another car happens to be better... or it doesn't meet some extreme fantasy of yours... are you going to sue BMW???

Naw... the blame does fall on the people who expected Samsung to do a bunch of crazy things. Samsung delivered a solid phone that will serve the general public well... and that's all that matters.

I don't know about you but I ALWAYS watch video with headphones. Especially when you're out in public. Besides, the quality of sound is much more superb with headsets on than the puny speakers on the phone.

It sounds like you all are getting caught up in a game of semantics. The "next big thing" could be taken as meaning the NEXT thing that is really big. You can't say that the GS4 doesn't have a big screen. There are hardly any phones that have a screen that is larger than the GS4 screen.

That's how I took it anyway. I also think that many people are getting worked up over nothing. If you don't like the GS4 or it's not a big enough improvement, don't buy it. Samsung is going to sell millions no matter if anyone on this forum buys it or not.

I've heard this same line time and time again now about the S4. This is far from true. Sure they may have grabbed a few pages out of the Apple playbook but thats true in any business venture. Whatever works, works .... Android OEM's and their designs/ideas are still far from Apple.

Of course they are going to market it as the next big thing, what company in their right mind markets their new product as " hey look this is pretty decent!"

Considering the galaxy line boast being bigger than the iphone, it is the next "big" thing.
