I would suggest your definition of tempered glass while true, is not accurate. While windshields made of "safety glass" which is a sandwich of two layers of glass bonded to a plastic middle layer. The glass may or may not be tempered (I don't know which or if both types are used). The glass used for screen protectors is a single sheet of glass which is tempered (like Gorilla brand tempered glass for example).
Put an organic solvent (acetone for example) on the surface of the product. If it melts or clouds up it is plastic. If it doesn't it is most likely glass.
LOL, i know, but when he asked for layman's terms, i was trying to avoid the type ofexplanation you just gave. i figured he was more interested in the glass/plastic distinction than a discussion of industrial practices.
