There's a storm brewing...

Hey Bennnnn,

I have a question that I wish you would answer for me. First, thank you for taking the time to share all the information that you have and for coming up with the fun riddles. Maybe you could ask your director this question or maybe you could answer it based on your knowledge of the inner workings of corporate Verizon.

Here's my question: What's so hard about making an announcement?

If the 17th is indeed going to be the launch date, how hard is it to put together a press release or a facebook status update or a tweet?

Seems to me that it would be almost no effort at all. Maybe one tenth of one man hour of work to tell a secretary to get out the form email for launch announcements and insert the words "Thunderbolt" and "March 17."

Or is the 17th not certain? Does Steve Jobs want the announcement held until after the ipud2 has had a week or two in the spotlight? or the iphail5?

^^^^^This is exactly what I was asking!!!!

how can they be fixing issues with the phone if the phones have been sitting in warehouses all this time? isn't that what we were told before? did they unpackage them all fix them and then re-seal them? i'm just frustrated my bb storm 2 is on its last legs and nothing in sight yet about the tb. i'm starting to think the 10th is out of the question as well. i do maintenace work for a national company that handles vzw corporate stores in eastern mass. i've done work orders to 3 different stores today back in the storage areas where they have the phones and i havent seen one tb, unless they have them locked up in there safes. if the 10th was a target date for them you would think the phones would already be there by now. spoke to all 3 managers about it and they all told me the same thing, they haven't been told anything yet about a release date, there just as frustrated because people want the phone and there losing customers.

I just texted my Director about the statement. I'll let you guys know what he says about it, but in the mean time I need to get back to work.

one more question for y'all... anyone worried about buyer's remorse once the bionic comes out? i'm pretty confident in the thunderbolt but each passing day makes me wonder more and more.

While speaking at Credit Suisse’s Convergence conference, Verizon’s CTO Tony Melone, said that the company’s much anticipated 4G LTE smartphones are still on track to be released in the first half of this year which gives them till June. The company admitted that they are still working through the issues of launching devices on new technology which is understandable.

Our issue with this is that the company needs to be clear on this whole thing, if they are having more issues than anticipated then just tell the customers that. They need to stop advertising all this coming soon stuff and just get the tech stabilized and launched (and get their retailers under control). We also have no idea what the pricing schemes on these new devices will look like, we expect them to be more expensive than their 3G counterparts but how much more no one really knows. We won’t even get into the HTC Thunderbolt issues but you can read about them here.

When Melone was asked why the LTE smartphones are taking so long to get to market he responded with this statement.

I guess our expectations change, but we had said first half of this year at CES, quite frankly, we think that exceeded people’s expectations. A year ago, people didn’t believe that there would be LTE smartphones in 2011. First half of the year is what we promised, first half of the year is still on track. So we don’t believe there are any new or surprising issues. I think what we’re facing is what you would expect, and that is a new technology, you are working through issues. And we anticipated that, and we are pleased at how we are working through issues. And as I said, you are going to see LTE smartphones on the network as promised, before the first half — before the second half of the year, by the end of the second quarter.

There have been lots of rumors about the Thunderbolt being terrible as far as battery life but Melone said that it wasn’t any one issue that was holding the technology up. So what do you guys think, should Verizon just stop talking about 4G until they have something tangible that they can put into our hands, right now they are just playing with our emotions right?

I read the article and it looks like we could be waiting until June for this phone.

I read the article too, and it appears to me that he was just saying there will be devices in the first half of the year. Not giving no more info or less, trying to say we said back at CES first half and we will hit that target. So get off Verizon's back over the Thunderbolt launch!

They aren't tweeting or announcing a release date on FB since they seem to be playing this one a week at a time.

By announcing a release date on Twitter or FB, they would be "locked in"... but by not saying anything, it gives them the flexibility to push things back and work bugs out - which is what we have been seeing unfold since Feb 14... and again on the 24th and the 28th... and again on March 10th. They aren't playing games for the sole purpose of torturing you. There's a legitimate reason behind all this.

That being said, you as the consumer have the option of #winning!! by NOT to buy their product if they piss you off enough. But if you wanna buy their gear, you play by their rules and timelines.

Frustrating? Yes. But I can totally understand why they are doing it this way

Not saying I will have the self discipline to do this....but that is the plan. If I can, at this point I am really nervous about the delays....after all, you are right, they are not torturing us on purpose....so it is probably better for someone like me...who knows almost nothing about how to fix this and change that to wait and see if this is a phone for me and my wife. Still optimistic!

I agree with the poster you quoted, we vote by our wallets, if they don't see enough sales because of the stuff there pulling, they'll change there tune if its enough to lose money over.

thats why I tell people not to go with Apple, they barely upgrade there hardware and don't even get me started on the OS.

its how i feel about products i buy or will buy in the future, i will not support them if they pull dirty marketing ploys, try to force things on consumers, try to lock you out of the product your buying (*cough* motorola *cough*)

there's alot of factors that will keep me loyal to a product as well as against it

keyword here is Boycott

I personally am extremely close to saying goodbye to the Tbolt and leaving Verizon to show my distaste in there "priorities"
who gives a flipping crap about if you have the best call quality, its not like i'm broadcasting music over the earpiece and want my friends to hear it clear as day.

I have other options in my area if Verizon doesn't deliver the March 17th date, and CTIA is looking that much better for me to switch.... the timing is impecable, given i may have to wait until May or later, but thats ok too, anything to get out of Verizon without paying an ETF

Nope! My wife had the DX before the Inc so I've played around with Blur and Sense and IMHO, Blur stinks! Sense is way better. Plus, locked bootloader on the Moto is a no go.

Apparently, these guys are accurate at ZoKnowsGaming, this is also being reported at ZDNet, where Tony Melone apparently spoke at the Credit Suisse’s Convergence conference. Come on Verizon, please give us something.

Here's a quick situation i went through

My first android phone = Droid Incredible
Droid X is announced a few months later, I get it, mostly because of the larger screen, I HATED it, BLUR sucks big time over Sense
I got my original Droid Incredible back after 2 days of using the Droid X
