Things you hate most about phone salesmen

I must chime in. I sell phones each and every day. You wouldn't believe some of the things I've heard and had to deal with. It's not about me though.

As a salesman the job is to sell. It is just as frustrating, if not more, for us to try to convince or "strongly suggest" an accessory(s) to a customer when he/she doesn't want it. You know what's even MORE frustrating? When a customer wants to chop your head off when they have to pay a deductible for a device that had no case that he/she dropped in a toilet full of knives. Or even better, when there is No insurance and the customer has to pull full price for another device.. And then you.. And the company you work for is every terrible word in and out of the book.

As far as approaching a customer "too quickly" i can See how that can be intimidating and make a customer uneasy. At the same time, more than likely, it's a commission based job and every customer you take Is an opportunity to make money. That's the general understanding, so people will compete. First come.. First serve. And if you aren't aggressive in a sales job, you won't have a job. Also, nobody wants to spend ALL DAY in a cell phone store. The quicker you're greeted, the faster you can be taken care of and go about the rest of your day.

Now two things I can say I 1000% agree with OP about. Not being well informed and lying to customers is NOT something I agree with. I may lose sales because of it, but I'm usually pretty thorough and honest about taxes, fees or whatever else may pertain to the situation. There are a lot of different things constantly coming down the pike as far as cell phone technology is concerned, so it's hard to be a master with every feature of possible trouble shooting issue. That is still, no excuse, for a salesman to not have, at least, general knowledge of what they're selling.

Also just keep this in mind... More than likely if you're reading this, then you're probably a little more informed the average customer. I would also like everyone to keep in mind that salesman also all have quotas. So when we are trying to "up sell" you or bundle you with accessories it's because we have goals we need to hit. It also makes us money and WE ALL have bills to pay and mouths to feed. At the end of the day.. We are just doing our jobs. Just wanted to throw my opinion in there.

Much like others have said, my pet peeve with ALL sales people, not just phones, is a lack of knowledge about the product. I HATE when I am looking for answers and know more about the product then the person trying to sale it to me. Now I don't expect everyone to know everything about every single product in the store, however a willingness to say "I don't know. let me find out" should be present.

I don't blame sales reps for pushing certain products, because often they are told to do that and meet certain quotas by the whims of their corporate office.

I do Verizon sales for a reseller and I am one of the best that do it. Yes we have horrible sales people that push and shove people into certain phones for money. But as customers you have to understand not everyone is out to rape you and take advantage of you. I try to put every customer in the right phone that's good for them. But we have quotas also and numbers we have to hit or we can lose our jobs. Unlike most people in my job I spend hours on ac and xda reading people thoughts and problems on certain phones I give every customer pro and cons on every phone.

I had a phone salesman dissuade a customer from upgrading to an iPhone because "It would be impossible to transfer his contacts over from android to iOS".

Hello, google contacts?

But looking at him, it was more likely due to sheer ignorance rather than blatant misrepresentation. When pressed further in the advantages of android, he could only say that it lets you "do more things" but could not elaborate when pressed.

It's times like this I understand why apple market their products the way it does. The average consumer really has to be handheld through the workings of a smartphone!

With the responses by some of you salesmen in this thread, it sounds like some of you don't like your jobs. Perhaps you should look into a job where you don't earn commission pay (because frankly commission is stupid) or maybe sell cars or something. But since you work a job where you earn commission, isn't there a union you could join?

I personally feel like it is the salesmen that are being taken advantage of. They are at the whims of their company, an all mighty entity that they depend on for their paycheck. Sure some are complete jerks but that doesn't mean you should bash on all of them.

And to you salesmen, what makes you think you know the mind of the country sumer so well, that you can go and barrage then as soon as they walk in the store? Many customers see this as an affront to their intelligence (I for one do). It seems that you guys are like sharks in a really small pond, I mean at some of the sprint stores I've been to, some of the employees practically jump at a sale and quite frankly it's pathetic.

Now I don't mean to bash on salesmen because a lot of their aggressive work ethics come from their cutthroat company they work for, so they shouldn't be directly blamed.

I prefer to order my phones directly from the manufacturer, I avoid all the hassle of the store, and I don't have people trying to swindle me. I think the average consumer is unaware they have the power to do so, it's actually generally cheaper than going to the store, as the average markup on a smartphone is around $50-100.

And don't even get me started on those bs contracts.
