Thinking of adding a 5x as a secondary to my iPhone 6s Plus anyone else have this set up?

I cannot leave iPhone completely. Tried it for months and did it for 2 1/2 months at the longest stretch. Anyway, I'm going to buy a 5x on Swappa as a secondary, because I like Android (pure android) but I can't live there full time. Does anyone else have this set up? Do you like it? Does it drive you crazy?

I have a 5X, but not the iPhone. I like the Nexus. Nice snappy device.

I have an iPhone for work and a Nexus 5X as my personal device. The only time I prefer to use the iPhone is when I am doing something data heavy.

I have the same setup

iphone 6s plus on verizon and Nexus 5x on freedompop

my main phone is verizon but if I am taking the 5x, i setup call forwarding on the iphone

How does it work out for you?

I have both. I switch back and forth quite a bit. I mainly use the 5X lately at home on wifi and not a daily driver since I installed N on it. I love both phones equally but still prefer the camera on the iPhone. That slight delay from pressing the shutter to the picture being taken on the 5X is annoying. iPhone is much better in that regard.

Not really the answer you're looking for but...

I had an iPhone 6 Plus (gone now) on VZW. Am a new owner of a Nexus 5X and Google Fi service. So far so good!

...although I am a little confounded on what to do about my old iTunes library...

That's one of the most annoying things that has led me not to make an Android phone my daily driver. I have iTunes and I have transferred all of my music to Google Play Music and I think it sucks, plus my wife and I have iTunes and share everything, also I run and use Nike Running and Apple Music is integrated but Play Music isn't to that app. Finally, I love iMessage and just generally the way iOS blends well with everything on the iPhone.

I have this exact setup. It's nice to keep 1 phone for work and the other for personal use, so my iPhone I use at work and 5X I use with all my crap. Since I use my iPhone 6s Plus for work, during the week my SIM is installed in my iPhone. On weekends, I pull the SIM out and use my 5X. Both phones go into WiFi mode when there's no SIM installed. I wish I could go with one or the other, but I cannot. Hang on, let me go into advanced mode and I'll reply with my actual experiences and reasoning...

Reason why I carry two phones:
  1. Real Estate - I like having more screen space throughout the week. My eyes are getting older and I don't want have to pull out reading glasses at work. I'm not vain, I just don't want to carry them around. However, on weekends, I love the smaller size of the 5X. It's perfect for working out on weekends, and just generally easier carrying around in shorts and jeans. So why not a 6P and 5X? Because of the next reason on my list:
  2. iPhones Just Work - No, you cannot customize an iPhone to suit your tastes, but during the week, that's exactly what I don't want to have to do. During the regular work week, I just want my phone to work. I don't want to have to figure something out in order to get my work voicemail to play. I don't want to have to figure out which program to load to get my work email, or see that document. I just want it to work.
  3. Hotspot - Biggest reason I cannot leave Android for iOS. I could deal with the items above and I'd happily leave Android for iOS, but I cannot deal with Apple's hotspot. It's great if you're attached to your Mackbook Pro or iPad. The hotspot works beautifully. But when you attached to it from an Android tablet, Windows computer, or any other device, the hotspot freaks out. It'll let you surf for a minute, then shut you down for a minute. It's constantly bouncing your data that way. Since I use my hotspot all the time, I can deal with it during the week using my iPad on the go, but on weekends, I must be able to connect whatever I want to it. So I keep an Android phone for weekend use.

Issues I have run into:
  • I was swapping SIMS between the iPhone 6 Plus and LG G2 using a SIM adaptor and ended up damaging the SIM slot on the G2. Bad enough where the phone was unusable. So, if you're going to be swapping SIM cards a lot, make sure the 2 phones share the same style SIM. Also, be careful! Don't force the SIM in or out of either phone. Remember, they are designed to leave the SIM in the majority of the phone's life. So far I haven't had any problems swapping between the 5X and iPhone 6s Plus.
  • Verizon's Visual voicemail doesn't work on the 5X. The iPhone uses Visual Voicemail to show you the voicemails, but the 5X doesn't work on VZW. I think I have to do something with Verizon to get rid of this problem, but it would return when I put my SIM back in the iPhone. What I get on the 5X is a text message whenever I get a voicemail from a 90080006202 number. Not a huge deal for me as I know this means voicemail, but some have a real problem with it.
  • No other problems I can think of.

How I'm able to carry two phones:
  • I use Google Voice as my work cell phone number. This way my work cell phone number follows me. However, sometimes I use an AT&T GoPhone SIM in my iPhone. During those times, I simply forward my work GVoice number to that GoPhone number and I get my work calls.
  • When I do not renew my GoPhone, I simply move the GVoice back to my Verizon number.
  • So, sometimes I carry 2 phones (work and personal), sometimes I just carry 1.

Of course here lately I've kept my GoPhone active on my iPhone and I've been carrying my 5X as my personal/hotspot. However, I'm not renewing the GoPhone this month, so back to swapping out. I really am engrained in the iOS environment during the week at work. And I really have to have an Android phone for hotspots, so I'm stuck for now. Both phones are great and both phones have the same signal. Of course, no Android phone will ever compare to an iPhone when it comes to battery life. I went 8 days on a single charge with my iPhone and the AT&T GoPhone SIM installed. I never charge it during the week when I'm using it as my work phone.

How are you liking the Fi service. Since you left Verizon, have you noticed any spots were you no longer have good signal? Or do you live in a area that has great signal from every provider? I live in a rural less populated area and have had trouble with T-Mobile years ago, Sprint was never any good in my neck of the woods. I know they have gotten better over the last couple of years, just curious.

I came from an iPhone 6 and am not too invested into any platform, kind of all over. It's only been a few days, but I see the benefit of google services and android are pretty powerful(OK Google is 20 times better than Siri). Anything I do seems to get done quicker on android. I'll have to see if I can live without iMessage/FaceTime(fam&friends are all on it.), the apple podcast app, and the tighter integration with my car.

I think iPhone was a clear choice in early smartphone days, but recently hardware does not seem to command experience as strongly(with the exception of camera exp). The software seems to be what differentiates now, and with iOS you may get better support and polish for apps.. but the OS itself is limited in what those apps can do or the way in which they operate.

Use pocketcasts for podcasts on both iOS and android. You won't regret being able to sign in an sync podcasts. Trust me! :)

For me, the whole smoothness of iOS is nice. I agree about Siri vs. OK Google and even Google Now (and Now On Tap). Siri is waaaay behind Google in this area. I have gone back and forth from both platforms in the past 8 months and found that I love iOS and am close to breaking with it, but I hate the bloat on Sammys and LGs and Nexus phones are awesome. I will have one of each for a while (iPhone and Nexus) and see if by the time the new Nexus phones come out in Fall of I want to jump for good. Or, I can just keep going back and forth. Nice problem to have.

I'll be following this thread because I'm working on the same setup.

My Nexus 5 was getting fussy just about the same time my photo editing computer was getting a little long in the tooth. Got excited about the Galaxy 7S Edge but didn't like it and returned it. Then I tried Project Fi, couldn't work with the coverage but really liked the Nexus 5X for $199 so I kept that. But, the Apple wheels were in motion and I ended up buying an iMac and using AT&T's two-for-one to get my wife and I each a new 6S Plus.

Liked the 6S Plus pretty well but, wanting to keep it in good condition, I ordered a waterproof case. Yikes, my new phone is as heavy as a small tablet and almost as big. And I really like some things about the Nexus 5X, like the convenient fingerprint reader, the very good camera, OK Google, maps and it's compactness. (There's a good chance I'll use this as my backpacking phone. The weight of the encased iPhone is significantly more, and I'm happier to carry the less expensive phone.)

So, instead of choosing one or the other, I'll use both. I'm going to activate the Nexus 5X with Ting and then swap SIMS, depending on which phone I feel like carrying.

I'd like to stay with Apple for messaging and voicemail, so I'll have to figure out how to handle that on the 5X. I'd be grateful for any advice.

(Sounds like I'm going in the opposite direction of everyone else, but I've already ported my Google Voice number to AT&T, so I've lost Google Voice as an option. I never liked it, but maybe it's better now. Anyway, for now, I'd like to make this work with the Apple system, even if it means getting my voicemail and messages a bit more slowly.)
