Thinking of an Incredible 2

Yes some people have had problems with the reception. But I never have. I don't know why. There are antennae in the battery door, so if the prongs on the battery door are bent or damaged it will give you bad reception. Also could be a location thing? I am in Rochester NY area and get fast data speeds and good reception.

I was in the samr position as the op. Using a 9650 yet wanting a new Shiney android. Looked long and hard at both the Dx2 & the Charge. Though both were/are fine devices I chose the inc2. Why? Because it was made by HTC. I had not onve heard og anyone that actually used a device made by HTC complain about any serious issues.

Signal?
I'm a trucker by trade & mobile device abuser by hobby. I find after using the inc2 for about 2 months now that the signal is no better or worse than any other smartphone I've used. Areas of spotty coverage are still there. For me, the real test of a Devices signal quality is will it make a call when I need it to. Data connection is another matter. The inc2 has been at least as good if not better than my 9650 was at making that data connection. Personally I think its more reliable as I am no longer dependant upon BIS. The new radio fule update that was pushed out on 9-19 has dramatically improved signal strength & data connection speeds.

Advice:
Just do it!
Pull the trigger on it & don't look back. It's a major adjustment for a blackberry user however its all good. Find a keyboard that you like & works well for you. SwiftKey x & Thumb Keyboard are both well worth the cost. SwiftKey x has the best predicted text of any I've tried. Also, Bellshare now offers its beweather for android.

Good luck with your decision.

I sent my S/O to the verizon store to check out some of the droid phones. I was pretty well set on a Bionic, She came back and said she wanted the Droid 3 because of the physical keyboard. she didn't like any of the virtual keypads. After looking at the ones I told her to look at and the Bionic I just decided that the 4G stuff was just more phone than I was likely to use at this stage. so I started looking harder at the 3g stuff. That is how I found this forum. I was a bit worried about the Droid 3 after reading that forum so came over here and pretty much settled on the Incredible2 for myself. When I told her that they had alternative keyboards for it my girl said "well order me one too then, I liked it better than the droid 3 but didn't like the keyboard" LOL

so we got 2 on the way. From what I have seen if they work only half as good as what people here say it is money well spent. Especially since I got them for 149 each due to a 50 buck instant rebate

I am currently a BB user (9650). I am thinking of getting an Increfible 2 which VZW is selling for 199 less 50 rebate plus I have a 50 credit making it 100 bux. For 100 its a good deal.

You can get it for free if you renew your plan through Wirefly. If you downgrade to a non-smartphone first, you can also get a $100 smartphone upgrade credit with trade-in of the old basic phone. But if you have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, you might not want to do that.

What are the issues with this phone, and from what I can tell the new 4G phines, Bionic etc. justeat up way too much battery. Will the Incredible 2 be good in two years. What do you think?

The one issue that has me hesitating is the call quality. Apparently the call quality is good for the person on the other end, but is inconsistent for the person using the DINC2. Some reviews say the call quality is okay, but more than half of the reviews say it sounds tinny, drops out, or gets echoes on the DINC2 side of the call.

For that reason I'm also considering a Droid X2 (which is reported to have excellent call quality but apparently has other issues). The main reason I'm not jumping on the DX2 is that it would cost me $120 for the DX2 vs. $0 for the DINC2 through Wirefly. The DX2 apparently also reboots itself at least twice a month. It looks like several people have gone from the X2 to the INC2 after having problems with the X2, but I haven't seen anyone in recent posts who has switched in the other direction due to problems with the INC2.

Call quality is fine on my Inc2, the speaker phone is just kind of quiet. It actually works better on Sense than it does on CM7 for me. People have reported a tinny sound though. You'll have to see if you can try out call quality in the store on an Inc2, and see what wireflys return policy is. Verizon only allows 14 days for returns now.

The x2 does have a Moto pentile screen and horrible blur. Your are going to definitely want to try out in the store. I didn't like the x2 at all after trying it many times and seeing that it was having memory management issues, and had a gross screen.

I think this is the Android on Verizon that people should get if they want a solid, reliable phone that they don't have to think about or worry about. I just posted a question here tonight asking why this forum was kind of low-activity and I think one of the reasons is that unlike some other phones, doesn't really have any big hurdles to overcome, which would necessitate a lot of discussion and idea exchange.

It's perfect in the hand. The weight is perfect, the size is perfect, and the feel is perfect. The weight is so perfect that even a featherlight gel case just barely tips it over the edge so that you know you were right on the sweet spot before that. I'm going to take note of the weight of this phone and use it as the yardstick for all future phone purchases. The Thunderbolt, by comparison was just too heavy. It was way too noticeable in a loose shorts pocket as I walked. Bonk bonk bonk. And even that would have been fine but the Thunderbolt sucked battery like it was going out of style. I don't want to have to think about that. With the Incredible 2, I don't.

The phone's primary known downside is the relatively quiet and tinny speakerphone. That seems to be universal. Some people get a power button that is too far recessed. And currently there are bugs that got pushed on us in the update to Gingerbread. Those will get fixed eventually but they are currently annoying. Among the Gingerbread update bugs, some people lose the ability to use the phone function. They'll lose the ability to access the clock app. They'll lose the ability to access the market. Stuff like that. The answer to all of them is factory reset. I'm currently living with a clock app that has again stopped being accessible. I did a factory reset and fixed it but the problem came back a few weeks later. I could factory reset again but don't feel like it so I just downloaded Alarm Clock Plus so I could have alarm, stopwatch, and timers. As long as your contacts are synced to Google (or otherwise backed up by your method of choice), it's not a terribly big deal to factory reset. But I just have so much stuff in folders and have all my widgets set up and stuff that I don't feel like doing it again. But the point of all that is just to illustrate that the problem is minor enough that I just live with a workaround and don't think about it.

As for whether this phone will still be good in 2 years, we can't know, but I suspect it will be. It depends on what you mean by good though. I think it will still be functional and reliable and plugging away. But it won't be updated to the latest version of Android (absent root) and it won't be anywhere near as fast or capable as the phones coming out at that time. It won't be competitive. But that's true of any phone you buy today. But think about, say, an iPhone that someone might have gotten in summer 2009. It's probably still doing great and is still considered a capable modern smartphone, participating in the current smartphone ecosystem. There are faster processors and better screens and newer features and whatnot, but it still does the job.

Verizon's next generation of 4G phones (or maybe the one after that) will be better at battery use and will be less bulky than the current crop. If I were buying right now, I'd probably still buy this phone instead of one of those, just for battery reasons. I'd be tempted by the Bionic, but from what I've read the battery is still an issue, if not quite as bad as, say, the Thunderbolt's. So I say buy with confidence.

My feelings exactly. I bought a Palm Pixi Plus off contract (only $55 @ the time) to lock in unlimited data last June. Actually, a nice little phone (slow with 600 Mhz and only 256 MB memory and only 2.63") to get me into the smartphone game. Actually, I can see why WebOS people are mourning this OS. This would work great with the Inc 2 hardware. Anyways, I've been waiting for all the new Superphones to launch (Razr, Rezound & Nexus) and I found with the first two - WAY TOO BIG - I have fairly small hands and don't wear cargo pants so while the Razr and Rezound are both great pieces of hardware - just way too big. I was going to wait for the Nexus until they had the Red Dinc 2s this past weekend and finally pulled the trigger. Wanted to see how stock worked and I'm very happen with Sense 2.1 so far. While not planning to root I may be tempted by some ICS/Sense ROMs next spring or summer. I've been a tech geek for many years but I've found that now I just want my tech gear to work. The Dinc 2 so far has been a great piece of hardware/software that I think will probably be good for me for at least 12 months. I have a spare upgrade so I'm hoping that by next year dual core, 2nd Gen LTE and qHD displays will move down to the mid range (which I consider the Dinc 2 to be now) in a Dinc 2 chassis. The Dinc 2 form factor is the largest I would want and right now it looks great (the red is a little deeper (looks great and distinctive to me) than in the pictures.

My wife and I took advantage of the Thanksgiving Day sale of the Red DINC2, and couldn't be happier! Very solid phone as far as build quality, and Android interface. Battery life is incredible too (intentional pun), Sense is amazing as well, no lag at all, very fast. In the end I highly recommend the Incredible 2.

I got a free black (they also have white) DINC 2 from Best Buy Friday. I got an iphone in Apr and love it but had Android's in the past and enjoyed them as well. I got it basically because it was a free upgrade and I like to mess with phones. To all the iphone haters out there, well to each your own... I enjoy both OS's.

Did you do an early upgrade? Ie, you had your phone for more than a year, but less than 18 months, or were you completely due for the full upgrade?

I can get the discounted rate of $99.99 through VZW, but all of the third party places I've been to say that I'm not due for an upgrade.

Yes I was eligible for a full upgrade. I used the iPhone upgrade on another line in my plan. Not sure why one is saying you are and the other is saying you aren't... weird!

VZW wants us to pay them for phones. So if we see something free we really want somewhere else, we might be willing to pay for it on VZW. I think once you're eligible for a full upgrade, they'll let you upgrade anywhere.

Thanks!

I have been eligible for an upgrade since June (when I bought an off contract Palm Pixi Plus for $55 to save an unlimited data plan). Nice little phone - a little too small, love WebOS. I was thinking I would wait until Nov/Dec for the one of the Three New Superphones (Nexus, Razr, Rezound). When I tried the Razr and Rezound I found they were just too big and bulky (I'm talking surface area - thin doesn't make up for tall and wide). I saw the specs on the Nexus and its taller by .20" and almost as wide as the Razr. When Verizon had the Red Dinc 2s for free over Thanksgiving I sprung for it. My thoughts on it (and I currently intend to stay stock) are Sense is pretty nice and the phone runs smoothly (be advised I am patient because WebOS on the Pixi was fairly slow). I will probably stick with this but I will look at the Nexus when it comes out because I still have until Jan 15 2012 to decide. I suspect I will stick with this (love the size and weight and I'm still getting it configured) and probably look at something in about a year (have another line that I can upgrade). I'll also be going to CES to see what the next wave of phones looks like. My last point is battery life is good (I am a light user on WiFi most of the day) and I don't expect to see LTE until at least Q1 2013. I think anyone that buys an Dinc 2 will be very happy with the purchase unless they are dazzled by the big (4.3 or higher) HD screens.

YMMV
