Thinking of going from Note 8 to Pixel 2 XL

You're settling for a mediocre screen though with the Pixel. No denying that. And now the recent update has huge battery drain with a hot back. Google isn't there yet with hardware. The software is definitely on point though.

Generalize much? My screen is perfect and I do not have battery drain nor hot back after the Feb update. The reports of a few do not always reflect the many. No one comes to forums to post "my phone is perfect today" every day of the week.

And at least Pixel owners know for a fact we will get the March update in, um March and Android P the same year it is released.

How can the software be on point if a recent update causes battery drain and overheating?

No issues with my pixel 2xl either.. These reports as well as some of us on the forums tend to over emphasize the flaws on any device without really speaking to everything it does better than the rest.

In 2019 I'll be going back to Samsung, however, probably not the Note, since I never figured out a reason to use the s-pen.

The main reason is Samsung pay. It is the killer app that only Samsung has.

I have a Gear 3 watch, mostly so I can still use Samsung pay, but phone calls can be an adventure with a Samsung Gear 3 watch and a pixel. Plus, I'd rather not wear a bulky watch and just use my phone to make payments.

As far as the look and feel, once you add Nova Launcher the all phone screens look and work basically the same. My Pixel 2 XL is set up exactly as my Note 5 was set up.

Pixels monthly updates really don't ever change much and often break something that needs to be fixed in the next month. Better to be a bit behind on the updates until the Pixel users find the bugs.

I'd say go for it! The 2 XL is a smaller footprint, feels great in the hand, and I personally think the display looks nice! You can always test it out in the store to see how you're liking it (bear in mind that display models are always on, so you might see a bit of an abused screen). Let us know what you decide!

originally ordered the kinda blue (64gb)...it was going to be a few extra weeks, so changed my order and got the black in 128gb...have a ringke bevel case on it now, and just ordered an orange carbon dbrand skin...I love orange lol

No problems with my Pixel 2 XL. I recently had someone remark about how good the screen looked!

That's cool! I like your choice in colour combos! I think I'll go for white.

No settling....screen is excellent.
No battery drain here from the update.

To each his own but I fail to see how a payment system is the end all to making a decision on which phone to buy.

I regard the Note 8 as a tablet. My ONLY reason to upgrade from S8+ was the stylus. Have had all the Notes excepting 1 and 7. Note 5 was my favorite form factor which is why I still use it at night to read books and browse net.

These top end android phones are pretty much all the same when you slap a case on them and add your preferred launcher.

One thing that Samsung has that no other phone has is the ability to pay with one's phone at any terminal. This is huge if you use your phone and credit cards a lot. For now I am muddling through with my gear 3 watch for Samsung pay.

I think the one feature I do like on the pixel is the squeeze to open AI. But I suppose Samsung has long press home button to do the same thing (or maybe they will allow remapping of the bixby button one day).

Note 3 to Pixel 2 (yes, Note 3 - I don't update until I need to). It's taking a bit of getting used to the smaller screen, and Android 8, but it took months to get used to the Note too. I'll eventually get used to this one - and it gets updates to P, Q and R - 3 years of Android updates (and probably security updates after that), so it should be good for at least 4 years. (But I'll probably keep it longer than that.)

The Pixel 3 will be out in Oct/Nov. Most likely google will improve the design and fix screen issues. So I'd hold off on the pixel 2 XL and wait. Then you'll have the Note 8, 9 to also consider.

October or November... Ooohhh. Can't wait!

Not that big a deal for me. I use Android Pay almost everywhere and there's no issue pulling out my credit card
