Thinking of making the plunge from iPhone

So this is actually completely untrue and been discussed upthread. Yes, you can text between Android's and iPhones. But for group chats, especially when everyone ion the group chat has iphones, if you go from iPhone to Android you don't get those chats anymore. Happened to me when I went to note 7 last year, and I missed quite a few important discussions before I realized what was going on. That is the issue, everyone else has to close out that chat on every phone involved in that specific chat, or else you never get the updates. It's stupid, probably intentional and unethical on Apple's part, but that is a sticking point.

Not sure the toy vs tool was specific to emoji usage, or the OS in general. I work with a lot of people who use both OS, I mean the apps are so similar these days, when I swap back and forth it's not that major. I find the biggest difference is around customization, but actual apps work very closely, perhaps dependant on industry.

I'm able to do group chat with iPhone, I set my note 8 group chat to sending MMS instead of SMS and it seems to be ok. I had issue when it was sent as SMS. But it's not flawless like iMessage because messages are sent via data instead the traditional SMS way.

Did you come from iOS and move to note? And you didn't lose any, nor did you have to have your friends close out prior group chats?

iMessage works just like a text message on other phones. People use it as their default text application. So I use it to text with Android users all the time. So in that use case it's just like Facebook messenger or any other sms site. iPhone texts come through blue bubbles, Android texts come through green bubbles.

The difference is that for apple to apple usage it doesn't go via SMS, and if you are in a group chat with iPhone users, and then you are no longer using an iPhone, those group messages won't come to you any longer unless you leave them all, and have all your friends close them out as well to kill the session.

So when I go to an Android phone, those group texts may still keep going on, but I no longer find out about dinner plans or latest news.

They work for me when I switch. And I switch all the time. What I do before I switch back to android is turn iMessage off a day or so before hand. Never had a issue. I get all my messages in my group threads just fine. If you know how to switch it’s not a problem.

I'm not being a wiseass but what is the big deal with getting or not getting timely security updates with android? I've never heard of phones getting hacked or getting viruses because they weren't on the most recent security update.

The potential is there. I stay in hotels all the time for work and when I'm on hotel WiFi, I don't want to get hacked from the latest vulnerability being exploited. Samsung takes forever to come out with security patches.

I had the iPhone 7 Plus and prior models before the note 8. My closest friends uses different os platforms, so we rely on fb messenger to group chat. There’s probably here and there where I’ll group chat in the stock messenging app, and it seems to run ok when sending mms to iPhone users.

To answer your question, I think it’s common that the existing group chat need to be close, and open a new one for it to work properly...

Ok so I'm looking at jumping ship from Apple to Samsung. I have the iPhone X and I'm not impressed with it at all. I haven't been with an Android phone since the note 5, so coming back is gonna be a little hard. I have a few questions for those that have made the jump.

1. How did you deal with switch back to sms instead of imessage, Most of my friends and family have iPhones.

2. How well do the emoji's switch over when sending

3. How are the updates from Samsung? Apple is always on the updates to fix or improve issues

4. Can someone help a brother out lol
I tried the X and the note 8 blows it away in every sense. I wouldn't hesitate to make the switch the only thing you are loosing are Imessage and FaceTime.

Sounds like you should just get an iPhone 8 plus. I like my iPhone 10 but the note 8 is great. The note 8 is so big lol.

...I actually considered going back to the iPhone and I iMessage and facetime was part of the reason because my wife has an iPhone but we chat exclusively in what's app so I realised there is nothing the apple only features do that can't be done in there. I'm really really happy with my note 8

I totally agree with you, When I switched back to the Note series from iPhone, I thought I would suffer not having imessage & facetime, but thanks to third-party apps which makes it easier to make the transition away from the apple ecosystem easier. We now mainly rely on FB messenger for our messaging & video/group video calls, so it makes it easier for us to communicate despite the different OS platform each individual uses.

I do enjoy both Note series & iPhone, but I feel like iPhone is on a plateau where there's nothing wow about the software experience and that my decision to get the Note 8. I get lots of compliments regarding my screen & camera/picture quality .

I have been a lifetime iPhone user and recently switched to the Note 8. First thing I'll say is I haven't regretted it!

As far as texting goes, losing iMessage ALMOST made me go back. However, FB Messenger does everything iMessage does and then some. I had my husband and family download the messenger app (which all of them had anyways) and they were good to go. When it comes to new people I meet I just tell them I use FB Messenger and I haven't had one person really care. It was easier than I thought.

I've never had any issues with emojis. I try and stick to the standard ones because I know those probably will go through fine. If it's something complicated I use GIFs on FB Messenger.

Haven't been on Samsung long enough to comment about updates...however an update is scheduled in a few months and I never keep my phones longer than 2 years anyways. So it's never been a huge deal for me. Plus, with Android if there's a feature on a new update I want there's usually an app in the Play store that I can download. Also, security updates come along frequently as well.

Hope this helps!

I have both the iPhone X and the Note 8 and both are great devices and suit certain people. I switched to the iPhone X as my primary device since it's release and yesterday switched back to my Note 8. I only switched to the X for a little over a week just so I can get the feel for what's new with iOS 11. I've had the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus but never really used it enough to get the feel of what was new with iOS 11. But there wasn't much new, lol. While the iPhone X is a great design and so much better than the iPHone 8 Plus it's still iOS and just minor updates that are exclusive to the iPhone X. The Note 8 or Android will always be my primary because it just suits my needs better. Get what suits you. Also, even though the iPhone X screen is bigger than the 8 Plus or 7 Plus the usable space is poorly implemented. iPhonedo explains it perfectly with his side by side comparisons to the latest iPhones.

That's how I feel, I didn't really get to experience iOS 11 on the iPhone, but I did on the iPad... which I see nothing different than iOS 10. Maybe i'm not playing around with it enough... but for sure I have an issue with the ugly control center. I wished they could've kept it simple like iOS10.

I made my decision after I saw the iOS 11 conference, because there was nothing new or beneficial for me... it seems like more of gimmicky features for kids (emoji, blah blah blah) than productive features. Still no multi-window (which I highly appreciated on the Note 8), and other features that are still behind from Android.

Also, I forgot to mention that when i was using the iPhone 7 plus (after the Note 7 debacle), I used FB messenger more than iMessage, so the transition from iPhone to Note 8 was easy, which I appreciated.

I use both. I have a recently purchased Note 5 and an iPhone 7 Plus. From my experience, the apps work slightly better on iOS, and I have better battery life on my iPhone 7 Plus. I can't speak to the Note 8, but man, right now I've been happy back in Samsung land. My Android Wear watch works better, Samsung Pay has worked out far better than Apple Pay thanks to MST, and Samsung has really polished the experience over all. My only real hiccup was iMessage, in the past I would just shut it off on my iPhone a few hours before switching, no problems. This time, I had shut it off a day before switching, and still had issues not getting text messages from iPhone using family members. I had to deregister my number on the Apple website twice and have each family member send me a text before it finally worked out. I suppose it depends on your priorities, but I think switching to Samsung is not bad at all. Biggest pluses: the S-Pen, Samsung Pay, and the ability to plug your phone in to copy music and files without using iTunes. Good luck, I hope the switch works out.
