Thoughts after using Bionic plus pictures

Well THAT was not something I wanted to see as a reply from my VZW Sales rep....

"I don't have specific detail yet, but I expect that a feature (ie; additional charges) will be required to use the Lapdock."

Man I hope he is wrong.

I was in the local corporate store yesterday and received the opposite answer. I asked the manager last week about additional fees for using lapdock and she answered about like the answer you got, sHe doesn't know but probably. Said she'd look into it. Last night I went back to confirm the 8th. Saw her and she said she found out there is no additional fee. She seemed quite certain.

Further, in the manual there is mention of additional fees when describing the wifi hot spot feture. But no mention of cost in the lapdock feature.

Guess we'll find out next Thursday.

Just got the launch kit today and was able to play with it. I will be doing more playing around later. Ill be back tonight for more thoughts and if you guys want to know anything, post your questions now.

The only thing that may stop me from purchasing the Bionic is the HTC Vigor.
Based on the diffs between the Bionic & Vigor and the fact that Vigor is not released yet and who knows when it will release, in your opinion do you think it may be worth waiting for Vigor as it is also supposed to be on Verizon 4G/LTE?

You can use webtop through an HDMI cable on an Atrix if you root it. The adapter is a gimmick...but an extra $30 to Verizon to use an accessory? Wtf. I'd just tether the crap out of everything if I had to pay for that plan to just to piss them off and use a ton of data.

Why is everyone thinking you need a tethering plan or some other feature you have to pay for? You don't have to pay for anything but the accessory. AT&T was doing a bundle deal where if you bought the LapDock & Tethering you would get it at a discounted price. However just so you know the Media Dock & LapDock for the Bionic come with USB ports you can actually plug devices into, so no there not a "gimmick" they are adding USB Host support.

Maybe because I read that repeatedly in the Atrix forums when i was trying to look up information about the Lapdock? That, and the recent post I wrote direct from the VZW Sales guy i'm working with. He wasn't sure, but was thinking there was going to be a 'feature' fee. This again, is only dealing with the Lapdock. Not sure about anything else.

Well 100% there is no feature fee. There was no feature for the Atrix, everyone was pissed off thinking they had to get tethering since AT&T did a bundle to make the Lapdock cheaper.

I sure hope that's right. Its the only thing really eating away at my happiness. lol That and I wish the lapdock had a 'scroll' section on the touchpad, but oh well. I just need it to work so I can leave my expensive laptop home where its safe.

It's not "sure hope", it is 100% right. And guess what the bionic has the capability of connecting to your "expensive laptop" at home to download and stream from it without having to deal with a cloud service.

I really don't think you can compare the OG to a DX in terms of stable OCing. The OG was completely unlocked, the DX is not, so no custom kernels. I'm pretty sure that if the DX was unlocked, you'd be able to OC it at a higher speed.

I am a pathetic X owner, 2nd int brings kernels. Sorry chappy.

Yeah, i'm not too worried about that. If the Citrix Receiver stuff works as I hope it does, i'll be just fine. I have a published Desktop, Word, Excel, RDP, etc... all working fine from any normal computer. As long as the receiver within the Webtop works as I hope it does, i'll easily be on my home network free to do anything i could do if i was sitting at home. I've got a gaming desktop, my nice XPS laptop, mac mini (running Vista of all things for my wife), 3 2U rackmount servers, etc... lol Super geek with a large electric bill.

I hope to see some devs hack the hell out of it and make it more useful - (i.e., install different apps like a better browser, etc), then we'll all buy one. :p

Yeah. I saw someone was able to get a fully? functional install of Ubuntu running on (or as?) the webtop app. At that point you have a full linux OS and all apps available to it so long as the phone can run 'em.

EDIT: On the Atrix, that is.

I was talking about the adapter dude, it just plugs into the phone and then HDMI to the TV. I know about the USB ports, and yes, that's NOT a gimmick, it's useful.

Now THAT'S what I want to hear. I really feel that the laptop dock concept is a step into the next wave of computing. we all have phones - who needs PCs? we go home or to work, plop our phones into docks and get to work!

I'm not waiting. The Bionic is more phone than I need right now and probably will be for at least the next year or more.
HTC makes good phones, but I just prefer Motorola phones overall. I use my device as a phone first and everything else is secondary. With that said I've yet to to find a cell phone that matches Moto's call quality.

Another thing to consider is, nothing has been made official as far as release date on the Vigor. so anything can happen. Case in point, the Bionic was delayed almost 7 months.

EDIT: DISCLAIMER!!!!!! Don't try this on your Bionic. lol

Thanks for the link - I'll see what I can do if I can my hands on one. I do a lot of mobile development and testing for my job (I'm at work right now actually) - sometimes I get lucky and a new toy arrives on my desk. Unfortunately we're an EV-DO reliant company so GSM stuff was useless to us.

My boss loved the idea of the laptop dock so something like might peak his interest.
