Thoughts after using Bionic plus pictures

Lol. Well the lapdock is a bit expensive, somewhere between $200-300 I would think. I don't know yet. The phone's screen, from what others have said is very good and viewable, especially outside in direct sunlight and even when wearing polarized sunglasses. I'm getting LTE here in Santa Barbara next thursday, the 15th, so I'm happy about that. But in the case of California, they'll probably get 4G out to you sometime in the next few months, they really want to plaster California with 4G because there are so many people here.

I live in Humboldt County (behind the redwood curtain as they say) and we are barely considered California. Very close to the Oregon border. I would be shocked if we got 4G coverage anytime soon. We were about the last ones to get 3G, so I doubt 4G will be any different. One can hope though.

Honestly, to me, $300 does not seem that horrible for the dock... assuming that there is no tethering charge of course. I get a company discount and I am hoping perhaps Verizon might have a bundle with the phone, or I might just wait a few weeks for Amazon to sell them. My laptop is old and I have been considering a Netbook as I really just use it for internet and email. This phone lapdock seems perfect for me. I nice light netbook that works wherever you have a cellphone signal. Sweet!:D

Yeah it seems great if you want to replace having a netbook. Personally, I have a powerful laptop that I need for my work (I do video editing and visual effects), so the lapdock isn't my sort of thing. But it's cool because I think I heard it also charges it, so you'll have an extra charger that can charge it on the go.

Im in the same boat for a big powerful laptop but do photos LOL. I was almost wondering about the whole Zumo thing if I just could leave my laptop home and pull all my photos to upload at work.

I was wondering that too...could I access all my junk on my computer from school then, and just leave my computer at home unless I need to do some video editing that day. My school's WiFi network sucks anyways, and I have to re-enter my username and password to get into it like every 30 minutes when it kicks me out. I might be rooting and tethering my 4G connection to my laptop lol.

At the risk of venturing off topic here, I was also wondering about the whole Zumo thing, it sounds intriguing. What I was concerned about though was leaving my computer on at home. My rig has a 1200watt power supply with dual GTX280 video cards and it doesn't exactly sip the electricity. I have never used any kind of remote software, so I am not familiar with how it all works. Can I have my desktop sleep to save power? Can it be woken up by the lapdock?

Yeah I was wondering that too...I usually don't turn my computer all the way off when it's at home, I usually sleep it.

First your motherboard needs to support S3 sleep and Wake on Lan - then you should be able to Telnet in and wake it.

There are a lot of Lapdock/Webtop haters out there and I understand it is not for everyone but I think it has a lot of fun potential. I am often not near a wifi connection. Sure it would be better to have a $800 laptop and a 4G card. But I am hoping to pickup a Lapdock fairly cheap at some point, maybe get the $200 Atrix dock and hack the connectors to get it to work. I will only buy the Lapdock if I don't have to pay any additional fees to Verizon for using it - But I look at the Lapdock as a large screen, keyboarded charging dock and Modding webtop with a ~full version of Linux opens up a lot of extra usefulness.:)

It.doesn't require a tethering fee its kinda odd how that rumor started, it was because atnt packaged the docks subsidized with a tethering own but if you pay full price its not needed.

Lol I guess I probably won't be able to wake it then...I doubt my laptop supports S3 sleep or Wake on LAN, but is there any way to know for sure...?

Yeah...I don't really want the lapdock myself just because it's expensive. If it was like a $100 accessory I'd probably think about it. But I don't have any money...and I dropped like $1200 on this laptop so it better be good. I can just tether 4G to my laptop if I REALLY need it too, after I root the Bionic. But often I'm just fine with WiFi, and I usually only need WiFi to look stuff up, which then I could just do on the phone anyways. But I see the usefulness if you want something a little smaller and lighter to carry around, but I'm young and can handle it ;).

I realize you're still a student so i'll rehash my reasons for wanting the lapdock. Yours would be limited and you already mentioned video/image editing which I wouldn't recommend via a Citrix/RDP connection :) I work for a large bank and am in I.T. for said bank. I'm on-call every so often and i'd rather not tote around my XPS laptop in my trunk if I want to go out to dinner, movie, etc... If I can drop my phone in the back of a dock... connect via Citrix (or RDP if that works) back to a full Windows OS, I can use that to VPN into work and get my problem resolved. That, and the lapdock is a 'dumb' device. If it gets stolen out of my trunk, back seat, etc.... I dont lose anything but money. None of my data is on the device and I have no risk of data loss due to it not containing any data. Even on a 3G signal I can get more than enough performance for doing RDP/Citrix Published Desktop so i'm always going to have access to a full blown windows OS. $300 for the lapdock even if it doesn't do more than extend the capabilities of my phone, has its place in my world. Not to mention the limitless possibilities of having a potential full Linux OS after things are 'hacked'. I can't wait to try it all out, I just wish the touchpad had a 'scroll' section.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
I will check the specs of my EVGA 780i motherboard. Hopefully it has those features as it was a high-end board a few years ago when I built my system. Are these common features in a desktop motherboard?

Yeah that's why I've never really wanted to try to video edit off of a Citrix connection or something lol. And my laptop is a bit thinner and lighter than a Dell XPS, while still packing probably as much power as it. I have a spot in my backpack that fits my laptop, so I carry it around in there. It takes up less room than my binder, so it's not that bad for me. I can understand why you would want it though, it's lighter and yeah, you won't lose data if you get it stolen. For me though...who the hell steals anything from a '68 VW Beetle? Seriously lol. No one can see a lot of my work I've done to the car without getting into it anyways.
And having a full Linux OS would be amazing lol.

You can look through the user manual, or you can boot into the BIOS and look through the power settings or you could Google your laptop model and "S3 sleep" and "Wake on Lan".

I think the lapdock isn't a "fit" for everyone. The power connector broke on my last laptop and I am sick of pulling it apart and re-soldering it. I can't really justify buying a powerful laptop at the moment, I have desktops, servers that meet my needs at home and my phone does most of what I need when I am out and about.

I am really pretty excited about checking out the Zumocast feature - a secure way to access my home server would be great - I know it can be done with the phone now but it has never worked great before - but I am hopeful that with 4G and the updated hardware of the Bionic it will work smoothly. I have 8TB's in my server 3/4 full so far with media(Movies/Tv etc.)

Anyway, we should probably not derail this thread any further and we will probably need to get our phones to really see what new cool stuff we can get them to do! :D

Lol you think I kept the manual somewhere I can find it? ahahaha

I'm really interested in the Zumocast as well...I'd like to see how well it works, I can always leave my computer on if I have to.
And there will always be something that you can do with a new phone that you didn't think of before!

This is looking better as I read Joe's brief comments on the battery life. Hopefully, we will get more detail on that. The only dissapointment so far is that I would like to have seen NFC with this phone also. By the time my NEXT upgrade will be available in 2 years NFC will be wide spread (my opinion). I am very excited about this phone, however. I still am using my BB Storm I. :( Also, being a little older than the average person in this crowd, the bigger screen will be easier to read.

Exactly. Right now NFC is just a gimmick. There's really no reason to have it in this phone. There aren't very many uses for it yet. Anyone who gets the Bionic will be eligible for an upgrade in 2 years. By the time that upgrade comes we'll know if NFC is here to stay, and if it is, the next phones will have it.

Im still waiting for my manager to activate it, then I can do some tests. The glass on the screen is very nice, its hard to explain, but it compliments the actually screen. I want to stress that there is NO redraw. If your not familar with what that is, the d3 has an issue where after closing a app that's pretty heavy on ram or it would have to load all apps and widgets on the screen and it would take about 5 secs before it finished and was extremely annoying.

That's because the D3 and Charge don't have enough RAM. The Bionic has 1gb of RAM.
