Thunderbolt Battery Complaints + Tips/Tricks

Here's a good video for everyone to check out that's thinking about getting the Bionic... YouTube - Motorola DROID Bionic Hands-On. Pay attention to the battery level while watching, I can't be sure but it seems to drop while watching the demo. Also, listen to the demonstrators comments on the Bionic's battery life, not to promising. I will say that Motorola phones always seem to have really good alternative battery options available for us to purchase. Whatever the case, I do not expect the Bionic to have good battery life on the stock battery. If HTC or Verizon brings out a decent alternative battery that doesn't ruin the look of the phone the Thunderbolt would be a good deal. Just something else to consider.

The battery looks pretty steady in that video. The only time it changes is when he hits the Skype app, and that must have been a pre-rendered demo because the notification bar changes to what looks like a Sense skin!

To be honest I haven't had any issues with the battery. I took a 1hr drive using the navigation and streaming music on 3g and 4g and I still had about 55% battery life left.

WOW, you lost 45% of your battery power in one hour! And THAT's GOOD?

I assume you where you testing the battery performance, that's why you didn't have it plugged into the car charger?

Today is going better.

I did a bump charge this morning for the first time. My results so far:

(I'm in a 4G area)

- Full charge over night, bump charge in the morning.
- Wifi turned on.
- Screen set at 25%
- Auto sync's set to minimum or off.
- Wrote and sent two emails.
- Read five emails
- One three and a half minute phone call.
- took six photos.
- did two bluetooth photo transfers to computer.
- deleted 35 old emails.

Battery shows 90% after 2 hours and 15 minutes.

That's an improvement.

It's to be expected if you're using power drainers like your GPS and streaming music. Navigation (GPS) is one of the biggest power vampires around, I try to keep my phone plugged in when I need to use it. It is what it is, but what are you gonna do? Better to use it than sit around imagining all the cool things your device would do. :)

As mentioned above the GPS is a HUGE killer never mind topped with streaming music. My Incredible would be at ~40-30% in that amount of time. But yes that's why I didn't have it plugged in, that and my sister needed to charge her Incredible.

Awesome post. A quick note for people trying to track down 3rd party apps sucking down battery power:

Check out "System Panel" in the market. There's a free version and a paid version. The free version will give you a list of everything in memory, including telling you *how* it's running (active, background, service, etc). It also shows a real-time cpu-usage bar to the left of each item so you can see what's using your CPU and it will give you the total CPU time each application has consumed. It also functions as a normal task killer, too, allowing you to selectively force close apps that aren't shutting down on their own.

For $3 US, you can pick up the paid version which will log everything for you historically and plot it on a graph going back up to 1 week. You can look at historical battery charge, screen usage and CPU power graphed side-by-side, plus you can list the top 20 apps that have consumed the most battery in the selected time period. Then, you can click on an app and look at its historical CPU use compared to the total CPU use of the phone and battery life compared side-by-side.

It's an amazing tool to track down those errant apps. Since rooting and setting up SetCPU and watching my battery life with System Panel, I'm getting 30+ hours out of my HTC Evo :)

These phones *can* get good battery life, but you can't have your facebook/twitter/tumblr/etc updating every 5 minutes with the screen brightness on full and expect to get a full day.

Fact is, you should be able to do just that! But the manufacturers aren't letting us. Have to create a need for an extended battery, make more money on accessories, etc, etc.

Agreed. Plus, all the Atrix reviews have hailed it as having the best battery life of any Android phone, and the Bionic is just an Atrix with a few modifications. Not to mention that the Bionic's software was not final in that demo. I think the Bionic will deliver Moto's usual battery life strength.

Looking to pull the trigger and leave BB storm to Android, but all the threads I read re: battery issues is a buzz kill. I played with one for about 30 minutes today a V and think I may just dive in. So following everones suggestions I hope to get at least 8-10 hours before charging. Also there was still loads of apps in app mgmt that I knew nothing about or what the heck they did. Should I force them off or leave on?
Thanks

My battery hasn't been that bad. At work today, I've check twitter a bunch of times, facebook, sent texts, talked on the phone for 10-15 minutes, and played some words with friends and I'm still at 70-60%.

I'm using the app Green Power with my Thunderbolt. It helps a ton with turning on/off 4G when not needed and keeping WiFi on in areas where it is available. Gets me much better battery life without me having to change those settings during the day, Green Power does it for me. I dled and purchased Juice Defender with the UltimateJuice app and it does not work as well as the Green Power app, not even close! So, if you're interested Green Power does seem to help.

+1 for Green Power.

With Green Power in combination with 2 days bump charging, I've been getting between 14 and 15+ hours.

After a few days use, some of the tweaks listed above, and one bump charge cycle, the I can honestly say the battery life is much better than I originally thought.

I wasn't too sold on it at first and had to have it constantly plugged in while I was playing with it but now it's adequate. Not quite to what the level the BB Storm was but I seem to remember thinking the battery life on that wasn't great at first either. Software updates and app management go a long way to making these phones battery lifes *seemingly* improve quite a bit.

I did it the first two charges and now I'll just do it like once a week or month. It doesn't seem as necessary once you do it the first couple times because the whole purpose is to condition (train) your battery. If I'm wrong someone please let us know.

Chalk me up as another with improved battery life. I didn't even do anything. I was planning on buying the extended battery but I just got 16 hours of moderate use. Wifi on GPS on and screen at 100% brightness...EVERYTHING syncing(all apps and Gmail etc..)

I have no idea what has happened but I'm happy now.:)

I just bought the extended battery cause this is unacceptable to me. I've barely used it today and I'm down to 30% after 8 hours.

I bump charged for the first time this morning and I'm seeing tremendous battery life out of the 1400 stock battery. Current up-time of over 9 hours and I'm still at 80% battery.

I've used my TB somewhere between lightly and moderately today.

i have followed the tips inthis thread, and i've improved my battery life considerably. i've bump charged the phone twice, and today i am at 30% wth 26 hours of up time and 4:31 of awake time. that's not bad, right?

moderated use, and i have been allowing the phone to sync, but just once in a while...

what battery widget are you using? one i should get from android market?
