Thunderbolt - Best Buy Availability/Pricing/Ordering Discussion

Im convinced it's the 14th. The BB pic, the video. Too much proof. The other reports say their SOURCES say its the 24th. Well we have proof.

Exactly. The item number of the Bolt in the video matches the screen shot of the Best Buy Verizon soon-to-be-in-stock on the 14th item.

Is it really better to buy at BB? I've never got a phone from them.

I've never bought a phone from BB, but from what I've heard from people who have, the pluses are the rebates are instant as opposed to a verizon store or telesales (however at verizon online the rebate is instant also). BB gives you 30 days to try out the phone, which was the same as Verizon until Jan. 16th, when Verizon shortened the trial period to 14 days. Also, from what I understand, BB's Black Tie protection plan is superior to Verizon's insurance (don't know why specifically, but that's what I've heard).

But, and anyone correct me if I'm wrong, BB mobile works the same way online dealers do (like Amazon, Wirefly, & LetsTalk) in that you cannot change your plan for 6 months after signing up or face a penalty charge. Also, if you cancel after the 30 day trial period, you face not only an ETF from Verizon, but one from BB also (around $250 if it is like Amazon & the others) which would end up putting you over the retail cost of the phone.

Finally, BB doesn't do 1 year contracts, so if you plan to buy from them, be prepared to sign a 2 year contract or pay full retail. With Verizon getting rid of annual upgrades (also on Jan 16th) that means when you get a 2 year contract you cannot upgrade at subsidized pricing until after 20 months of signing up.

That's my understanding, and again anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

I will definitely be buying from BB. Im paying full retail. The phone is 600 bucks. But from what i was told, employees can get it for alot cheaper. 150-200 off. That's too good to pass up. I'll probably go in as soon as we open and try and it from mobile before they let customers in. That will give me enough time to set it up and have it running by the time we are open. :)

I'm currently debating going down there and getting hired just for the discount ;)

That's just wrong... :D

They are now saying that the phoen will not release with mobile hot spot abilities or Skype. Anyone know if this is true?

HTC Thunderbolt Loses More Points To Verizon iPhone At Launch

That's the way that it appears. There's a graphic posted here too:

HTC Thunderbolt to be launched without mobile hotspot and Skype video - Phone Arena

Not sure on what the timeframe is to get these features in. And I'm not sure why they would release it without them, unless the timeframe is too long.

Hot Spot and Skype Video are very data intensive applications. Think about it... if you were launching a new device on a new (and generally untested network) would you really put out two apps/functions that gobble bandwidth and add strain to the system? I'm sure Verizon wants to see what the load is like on their network, how it performs, customer feedback, etc. and then make the decision to turn it on.

It's just smart business.

i would bet its because they are rushing the device out. i read somewhere the skype piece was something they were waiting on skype from. The mobile hotspot, who knows doesnt make sense not to put that on it i would think its due to the iphone. Also since the initial reports we heard were this phone was releasing march, makes sense some of these "high end" features not be ready when launching a month earlier

You could make the argument that MAYBE the Skype application wasn't ready (but I don't see how that could be). But, the mobile hotspot? That's built into the OS and is used on their 3G devices. Could there be a hardware interaction issue? Possibly but I doubt it. If there is, they'll never be able to fix that with a code release.

I'm pretty comfortable that they're easing in the stuff that consumes a lot of data to see how it fares with non-4G devices.

I think because it's coming out with the iphone, they know there will be alot of traffic. Hotspot and skype will be even more. So they want to wait until the rush is over.

Supposedly the wait isn't due to VZW but more so Skype's end.

The only reason I don't believe that is that what we're talking about here is not revolutionary stuff. There are multiple apps on multiple platforms that have video chat. So, I don't see how Skype's crap is so revolutionary that they have to keep working on it. What I'd be more worried about is why Skype can't deliver on something that's their core business when everyone else and their mother has a voice/video chat service now.

i know what you're saying but they have really been pushing that skype is heavily integrated into the OS and contacts, etc, not just an add on app so i could see how this could have some bugs/issues they need worked out. regardless its all speculation on our part. hotspot sounds to be ready for launch now...

When will the BOGO be available for the TB? I want get the TB for myself and the wife. I know Verizon has BOGO promotion for certain phones, will this be one of them?
