Tiered Data and MHS/MBBC

It depends on your data consumption. If you consume less than 2gigs per month, then it is NOT worth it. I am going to monitor my data consumption for the lenght on my current unlimited data contract and see if I average more than 2 gigs per month. If I do not, (so far I am well below that) then I am going to get a new contract and a subsidized phone in two years time.
Not sure if Verizon will follow in AT&T's footsteps with the grandfathering of current unlimited data plans, but I just renewed a line with AT&T, for which I had unlimited data. I signed a new contract, got the discounted phone and kept my unlimited data. According to AT&T rep, I will not lose my unlimited data plan unless I make a change to the data plan myself. He said that signing a new contract does not change any of my features or calling plans including data plan. All current customers keep unlimited data unless they change it or cancel line and re-activate after 30 days. Hope Verizon follows along, as I will be renewing a couple phones with them after the 7th...

Yes they are grand-parented in EVEN if you upgrade...the screen cap from droid life earlier in the thread specifically states this.

For the foreseeable future,as I read it you would need to upgrade to a 4g plan before July 7 and then be grand-parented into unlimited 4g..
Where exactly did you read this? I thought a couple of Verizon leaks were pretty clear that a current 3G unlimited data plan would also be grandfather'd into unlimited data in the future, regardless of 3G or 4G.

Thanks, Robrecht

Actually I'm kind of glad that vzw is letting those of us Be grand fathered in, as I did some calculations and found that my average usage just for app updating is about 20 megs per day.that would be 620 megs for a31 day month.only leaving me 1.380 gigs left for every thing else.i would always be over my 2 gig allotment a little each month if that's the case.my wife on the other hand uses only 700 per month. And reducing her would be nice from 30 unlimited to 20 for 2 gigs.but verizon won't do that.too bad they won't work with the customer instead of us bending over for them.

The problem is that the lowest tier cost the same as the current unlimited plan (I don't count the 75mb plan at all). So, no current users will save anything, they would only pay the same, or pay more.

This contradicts their sales pitch (indicated in the memo) that this new pricing plan will benefit some, but cost others more, thus somehow being more "fair". But it benefits no one other than Verizon.

Problem is, you have to count it because it is a fact. You really cannot indiscriminately throw out the data you don't like to bolster your point of view. Or, you shouldn't.

Just an FYI, you can use Wifi to update the apps, and for that matter put your phone on wifi anytime it is available as this does not count towards data.

Exactly. I have learned (was kinda hard-headed about it at first :) ) to leave my Wifi ON so that it will always connect to my Wifi at home automatically. Also, to turn "Wifi in Area" notifications OFF so I don't get bombarded with all the Wifi locations I pass during the day. Works like a charm. Everything is automatic. I drive into my garage and I'm on Wifi before I come in the door. I leave my house and I'm back on RF. Never have to give it a thought. And, I find zero adverse battery effects. Actually, it may even improve battery for not constantly hunting for 3G/4G RF inside my house.

But it is NOT a real smartphone data plan. It is the amount of a data only a texting phone can use (and, not surprisingly, $10 is the cost for an additional texting-only line). There is no one who has a smartphone who uses that little data. The way they have pitched the concept of tiered data is that some who have data plans use a lot less than others, so a flat rate hurts them, they could be paying less if the heavier users are paying more. And that seems fair.

But, as it turns out, NO ONE will be able to continue to use the same amount of data, but pay less under this new plan. Even the lightest smartphone users will have to get the lowest *real* smartphone plan, 2 GB, which cost the same as the current unlimited plan.

Edit: they just posted the actual details of the plans and the 75 MB tier is not even available on smartphones, which makes sense for all the reasons I set out above. So, the lowest smartphone plan IS the 2 GB, at the same price as the current unlimited plan. So, it is only going to cost the same or more. NO savings even possible for smartphone users.

The new VZW data plans are for any and all phones. There is no distinction between smartphone and non-smartphone. Much less, "real" or "not-real".

As I just pointed out in the edit above:

I was going bu the older info and Morel;s post, yes the newer info does indicate that you are correct and for the foreseeable future you will be able to update from say the DInc (3G) to the LG Revolution (3G/4G) and keep your unlimited data plan.

It may be fact but it is all but irrelevant for this forum as that data plan really only works for feature phones. Yes you can select it with any phone BUT unless you are on wifi literally all day you wont be able to get by on that, even a Blackberry (which uses a fraction of the data an Android does) uses more than that.

And, the latest leaked document indicates that the 75 mb plan won't be available for smartphones anyway (and it shouldn't be).

Many of us don't have WiFi at home or work, it's not right for VZW to assume we do. If we did we would use it (better battery life at the very least) but those of us who don't should not have to pay the price for network abusers and people who have the option. My home Internet connection is a MiFi which while technically WiFi isn't the same as cable or DSL with a wide open pipe of data.

I haven't seen the newer postings yet, but I'll take your word for it. I do have to say that even though the $30/mo for 2G is the same amount of data as it was before, it's at 10+ times the speed :)

Anyway... as they say, it is what it is. I hate that phrase, but I guess it applies here.

+1 Could not have said it better myself!

Real as in realistic. Even my Blackberry which I use for almost nothing but texting and a little Facebook uses between 150-200MB/Mo.
