Tiered Data and MHS/MBBC

I haven't seen the newer postings yet, but I'll take your word for it. I do have to say that even though the $30/mo for 2G is the same amount of data as it was before, it's at 10+ times the speed :)

Yes, exactly the same as the unlimited plan! :0)

While I was going to stay on the unlimited no matter what, I would seriously have considered switching my daughter and wife to a 2GB plan if the cost was sufficiently less. They use less than 1 GB a month, so if they made it worth my while, I would've switched them. And I am sure they WANT people to switch off of the unlimited plans to the tiered plans.

And, the latest leaked document indicates that the 75 mb plan won't be available for smartphones anyway (and it shouldn't be).

Yes I just saw that. That's about how much data I used when I was using my LG Voyager and EnV Touch lol.

My son has the Env Touch and I am considering giving him my old Droid 1 and switching his plan to the unlimited smartphone plan. We were not going to get him a smart phone for another year (at least), so that is an extra $30 a month that we would be taking on, but in the long run, it may be worth it.

Yep, it will be in the long run. Tiered data will be a lot MORE expensive for anyone who actually uses their phone the way it was meant to be used...

If they had a cheaper 2Gb plan at any real savings I had two lines I was planning to switch to that (my BB and my Droid Pro which I barely use the data on) but now no way. Not switching off of unlimited until they debut the shared family data for smart-phones later this year or early next.

Thank you.

I see it says you're a Verizon Tech Specialist in your signature. So, you work for Verizon and this information is straight from Verizon?

Yes. I am a lead tech specialist with Verizon. I quoted my info directly from the memo I received as soon as I got word, as I stated I would a while back.

I'm under 75 megs a month with my BlackBerry, which I use for essentially one email address and nothing else. Well over two gigs a month with my Thunderbolt.

Blackberries compress the data, also you are running OS 5.1 most likely (on a Tour) and that is before RIM gave us the new slightly better browser. There are months when I am low like that other times up to 150mb or there a bouts. It just depends.

The main data hogs are Androids... iPhones don't even have the same data usage due to the lack of potential widgets constantly pinging for data.

Yeah, I think I would have gone a bit different route if I was in the "Who Decides The Prices" Department at Verizon. Mix some more expensive options for power users, but cheaper options for light users....

Yeah no kidding :(

Almost all of my devices I normally use under 2GB of data so for the most part going to tiered data would not necessarily break the bank but it's the idea of it; and I LIKE the fact that I don't have to worry about how long I watch YouTube or how many podcasts I download that kind of thing. That's part of why I like the idea of shared data plans.

Two nights ago it was on our local news here in Arizona that Verizon is indeed switching to tiered plans July 7th. But there wasn't any representative from Verizon willing to talk about it. I had emailed Verizon about the switch because I am not happy with it. I think what they are doing is not in the best interest of the customer and only benefits them. I commented that I am disappointed they think they have to follow AT&T on ripping off their customers. I also explained that Verizon is cutting edge and maintains to offer the best service to their customers and yet, this switch is not really offering the best to their customers. I told them I thought following the pack is not being a leader in the industry.

A customer care rep emailed me telling me they haven't heard of any data plan changes. He offered me an apology for my dismay and assured me Verizon cares about the quality of the business offered to their customers.

This is so bogus. It was on the NEWS and it has been stated this is going to happen. I don't like being lied to and I emailed him a reply and also sent an attachment. I haven't heard back HA !

I won't upgrade and will just keep my current phone if upgrading causes me to lose my unlimited plan, or find another phone elsewhere and pay retail.

That's because most low level reps, especially vendor centers, are either told to keep it quiet, or told at the last minute.

I've read all 10 pages of posts and I didn't see anybody commenting about unlimited 3g and 4g on Verizon systems have 2 different plan codes therefore when you're grandfathered you are locked in to that plan code. So if you have an unlimited 3g data plan and want to add a 4g phone to your plan you won't be able to keep the unlimited data plan for the simple fact that the system won't find it compatible a 4g phone with 3g data plan, and I can assure you this as a former Verizon employee. Obviously this happening after 07/07/11

Not necessarily. Based on the leaked documents it still looks like 3G and 4G phones will use the same plan at least on the customer facing side. May have a different feature code in the system but it seems like Verizon is viewing unlimited smartphone data as unlimited smartphone data regardless of the network. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

Yeah but I've seen the different codes and know how the system works... I understand that you are saying that the document might state different but trust me 3g data plan code won't work on 4G phones therefore forcing u to change ur data plan. At this moment obviously if you do that it won't matter because unlimited still exists, but I can tell you this by experience with previous grandfathered plans. I'm not bashing VZW or anyone, I just really suggest a lot if anybody has an upgrade and is looking on getting a 4G phone do it. I'm just trying to help :)

Not disputing any internal knowledge you may have from your past experience, but even if the coding is different, technically, it seems to me that VZW could still allow these codes to be seamlessly swapped on the "unlimited" billing side of the house.

They *could*. The key is between what they "could" and what they "will" do. They "could" also make a data plan for smartphones under $30...

So do iOS devices and Blackberries. I'm sure they have it configured in the system to keep the unlimited options. My guess would be something like the feature code specifying the lines with the larger ETFs. "Grand-parented Data" or something similar, which would fall off when you either dropped the data plan or switched to a tiered plan.
