So I called into tmobile about a charge to my account. they were very helpfull and helped me reveres the charges. Then they continued by telling me they would lower my rates if I agreed to sign up for another 2 years since my contract was up. I agreed and had them confirm that my discounted phone upgrade would still be available. They confirmed it and extended my contract. I go in last week to upgrade my phone and they tell me I have to pay full price for the phone. I bring up the fact I haven't upgraded since my signing up for another 2 years and they tell me their policy has changed. I say I either need a phone at a discounted price or my 2 year contract revoked. They refuse and tell me if i had come in a month earlier I could have received the discounted phone but now I am forced to be with their company for two years and have to purchase a phone at full price. SCREW YOU TMOBILE! I WILL BAD MOUTH YOUR TO EVERYONE I KNOW AND I REFUSE TO CONTINUE WITH YOUR COMPANY! THE 600 DOLLAR FEE TO CANCEL MY 3 LINES IS WORTH IT! THANKS FOR SCREWING A LOYAL CUSTOMER!

Sorry to hear about that but we can't do anything about it. You should contact someone in a higher position

Feel better?

Seriously, I get that you are angry and frustrated. Thing is the new Tmo is doing things was not secret. If this has all been documented. Then best to get ahold of someone in retentions. If they won't or can't help, keep talking up the chain of command. At least that way it wouldn't be for lack of trying. Besides even if they can't do anything about that. They may just pass on the EFT after all this. It's worth a try.

Yeah, they just changed to a non subsidy setup. You can have the full price paid in monthly installments, and supposedly you save money because you are paying full price, but depending on the phone, down payment and how much your savings per month are, it may be a wash, if not spending more money. I am not with T-Mo, nor defending them. I think it's a stupid idea. One day I wrote it all down: Assume $25/month savings (Many news site said between 20 and 30 bucks) and also assume a $150 down payment (lower than most upgrade prices) for phones like the Galaxy S3, it is roughly a wash, even the iPhone 5 16GB. Now anything more expensive than that i.e. Note 2, iPhone 32 GB and higher, you are spending more money ($27.50 for Note 2, $30 and $35 for 32 and 64 GB iPhones). This was also assuming a 20 month payment plan.

It's only at the end of the 20 months that you start to save money (no longer paying for the device), and I will admit I assumed 20 month payment installments.

Now, my question is: who will pay $150 if they don't have to (doing so drives up the monthly payments)?

They're actually doing you a favor, if you do the math over the life of the contract you come out ahead with the new plans.

Sounds like the OP got moved to a value plan and since his contract was up, his value plan did not have any equipment payment on it. Now if he wanted a new phone under this plan I'll bet the equipment payment (assuming $20) brings the total cost somewhat less than his legacy contract plan. And after 24 months that would go away. As mentioned earlier, If OP takes a step back, he would see that this is still better for him. Perhaps the TMo rep could have done a better job explaining.

It wouldn't hurt to call up the chain and explain the miscommunication. Might get some service credit.

Can you give us a timeline on this, and be a little more detailed? When did you make the first call where they told you that you could sign up for a new 2-year contract and get a discount price on the phone later? Frankly this sounds a little weird. Why would you sign a new contract without actually getting your new phone in hand?

Second, when did you actually go in and try to get the new phone? What was the time difference between these two events?

Third, what kind of plan were/are you on? A Value plan? A regular plan (that was regular, that is, before the new plans went into effect)? If it's a value plan, there is no phone discount for you.

I don't think your math is right. In T-Mobile's current lineup of phones, there is not a single phone that has a monthly payment (if purchased on the installment plan) of more than $20. The "down payments" are also in line with, if not lower than, the cost of subsidized phones at other carriers. In fact, many mid and low-end phones have monthly payments of $15 or even $10. So I am rather baffled as to where your $27.50 is coming from. The monthly savings for similar plans are actually more than $30 (for a single phone, Verizon's Share Everything plan with unlimited minutes, texts and 2 GB of data costs $100 a month, a plan on AT&T with 450 minutes, unlimited texts and 3GB of data costs $90 whereas a T-Mobile plan with unlimited texts and minutes and 2.5GB of high speed data costs $60 a month). So in either case, T-mobile saves you money even after the monthly installment payment, from the first month.

Of course, there is also the fact that the installment payments for T-Mobile go away when your phone is paid off, or if you bring your own phone, while other carriers do not provide you the option to pay less if you have your own phone at all.
