To Root Or Not To Root

As a total newbie to android tech, I am completely lost by many of the terms and concepts, for example, 'rooting' and 'flashing' one's phone. From what I have been able to gather, rooting apparently gives eperienced users and developers more room to manipulate or customize their handset. Is this correct? And why would a newbie like me need to root my new Galaxy S III?

Correct and if u have a s3 and u are a newbie then u prolly shouldn't root ur new phone...I have a s2 and I'm rooted its #Awesome tho just don't #Brick

I'd root. . Just because you have options.. u could root and leave the phone be. Or install a custom ROM and get vanilla android (no skins/custom ui) also devs will get jelly bean working for the S3 way before carriers release it. Its really easy in some cases. I once was a noob at rooting! We All were. Have to start at some point lol. But you will be fine.

It does. Speaking from past doings... I've sent back rooted phones with no problem. I guess of you openly tell them its rooted and it caused the problem they won't replace under warranty. But you can always go back to locked/unrooted if you need to.

+1 - I've read several XDA threads discussing it and there does not seem to be any danger of not being able to "unroot" and return to stock/factory condition before sending it in for warranty issues.

As a brand new Android user I totally plan to root/flash custom ROM's but I want to spend a few months (ok maybe weeks) on stock so I can better recognize the changes when I do use a custom ROM.

I'm definitely interested in seeing the difference between my current Touchwiz experience and vanilla ICS.

You will love it. I'm running stock jelly bean. I love it but its killing me lol. Custom Roms are the best.

I just switched over to Android and I rooted my S3 on day 1 no more ads...titanium backup..WOOOO its SIMPLE to root!
